On the 5th December 2014 passers-by and neighbours we shocked by a scorching and crumbling house in UX next to Moreosele High School. The burning house was an alleged suicide attempt by a cheating husband, after he stabbed his wife in the early hours of the morning and threatened to kill her. CAREERS

Ask anyone what a computer scientist does and a middle-aged white man hacking into Facebook from his gadget-filled apartment will most likely be the stereotypical response. Without a doubt, the ‘hacker’ culture is often described as dominated by techie men whose only fascination is cracking the code to streams of information, and certainly not a place for females. But contrary to popular belief the world of technology is taking a different turn. In the last few years, a number of females have moved up the ranks to hold senior positions and even establish their own technology companies. However, these numbers are not a true reflection of the potential women possess in contributing to the ICT sector. Statistics such as those released by the Institute of Information Technology Professionals (IITPSA) reveal that women hold 56% of global ICT professional jobs. In South Africa however, where women make up more than half of the country’s entire workforce, only 20% of the ICT workforce are women.

The problem:From their childhood days, little girls are encouraged to frolic with pink fairy toys and it is ‘a cause for concern’ if they play computer games. Consequently, many women have cited a lack of exposure to computer science as the main reason why they shy away from the field. Moreover, because they’ve had little to no contact with computer technology, even if they take up computer science studies, they often feel intimidated by their male counterparts, whom they assume have had more experience. The media only aggravate this problem further. Take the Big Bang Theory - Leonard, Sheldon, Howard and Raj are all depicted as geeky scientists with genius level IQs, but with zero social skills. Penny on the other hand, is the uneducated waitress and aspiring actress with an unparalleled

Levelling the field: Why we need more women in technology

knowledge of popular culture and great social skills to match, but not much in the brains department… See what we mean?

The solution:Although we should offer much praise to Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg for saving women from being tagged as only good for low-tech industries, South African women like Barbara Mallison and Annette Muller, are proving that females are indeed an asset to the ICT sector. Not only did these pioneers successfully spearhead their own companies, in 2014 they were also named among Forbes 10 Female Tech Founders to Watch in Africa. Motivating a new generation of women to learn computer technology empowers female entrepreneurs to come up with unique solutions to new problems. Additionally, as more and more industries step into the digital age, technology will permeate into every part of our economy. Computer science is a growing field, one in which the best talent is highly sought after. And one in which women can’t be ignored. One woman who shares these sentiments is freelance specialist tech journalist, Samantha Perry. “As a sector, we need to hire women to improve diversity in the workplace, as it’s been proven that higher diversity equals higher productivity and profit,” she explains. Heavily involved in WomeninTechZA, a website which aims to help address the gender gap in ICT by profiling local women in the sector, Perry says, “Despite what people might think, the tech industry is actually a great place for women – it’s a sector that values the ability to learn and adapt over huge amounts of training, making it accessible for anyone who’s got their head screwed on straight. The sector is growing and we’re desperate for skills – we need more people. And we need more women.” –Career24.com

Soul Candi's flagship Sessions series is an annual milestone that all house heads look forward to. Soul Candi Sessions 2015 could be described as the hottest edition yet. Featuring a dynamic combination of artists, DJs and Producers this album is a collector's must-have. Said industry leaders includes the soulful Lulo Cafe, boundary-breaking Cuebur, LDV-master Harael Salkow, new-comer Tellaman and YFM's favourite Mo Flava. Lulo Cafe Metro FM DJ and much-loved producer (especially by the ladies) Lulo Cafe was the first to be announced as a featured artist on Soul Candi Sessions 2015. His compilation is a soulful opener to the album. It is filled with great local production and remixes as well as one of his own songs featuring Bongeziwe thrown into the mix. Songs to look out for on his disc also include Zano - 'No Lie' (The Layabouts Remix), Kid FOnque featuring Nia Andrews - 'What I Do' and Terri Walker -'He Loves Me'. Cuebur the second featured artist is someone who has recently been making waves in the industry with his contribution to Andyboi's album “Trail Evolution” as well as his most recent release, “The Floor EP”. Cuebur has been performing internationally this year in both Paris and London and warns his fans to be prepared for “great music” on his Soul Candi Sessions 2015 disc. Filled with mostly his own productions featuring artists like Thandi Draai, Khensi and Zano. There is also a Cuebur remix of Empire of the Sun - 'We Are The People' that can't be missed.

Artist: ReasonAlbum: Audio High DefinitionGenre: Hip HopYear of release: 2014

On his third album Audio High Definition, which is a sequel to Audio 3D, Reason celebrates his success. Audio HD is Reason saying “started from bottom now I'm here”. He has arrived – with an album that features revered names such as emcee Tumi, South African singer Thandiswa Mazwai (King Tha), Nigerian emcee M.I., South African electro/rap twins Locnville, and Southern Californian rap trio Pac Div, among others. The music on Audio HD… well, in case you didn't get the memo, Reason the artist is now bigger than Reason the Mass. If you are still one of those that want backpacking Reason back, sucks to be you. A majority of the beats are, just like the ones on Audio 3D radio-friendly, for the lack of a better expression. Producer PH handles most of the production but the likes of Instro and Gemini Major lend a few beats too. Light-hearted, club-ready pieces which, coupled with the emcee's accurate flow, effortless delivery and honest lyricism and impressive penmanship, make for a solid set of songs.

Lebogang Mokubela is an intelligent young entrepreneur who is on his way to the top. He told me boldly in our interview that by the end of 2015 he will be a multi-millionare and I believe him. This tiny book (46 pages) is powerful, it will teach you how money can work for you, the value of understanding your cash flow, how assets can generate income, how to get out of debt-strategically and why your money loses value when its in the bank. The book is written on the basis that principles taught are principles applied, and principles applied produce results (You reap what you sow). This is a great a great book, I hope you enjoy it and get something out of it.

Motaung reveals Khune talks

End January 2015

The Minister of Sport and Recreation of South Africa, Fikile Mbalula, sees Bafana Bafana gaining a “wealth of experience” if knocked out of 2015 Africa Cup of Nations. Addressing the media at the team hotel in Equatorial Guinea, Mbaluala expressed his confidence in the team. “Should we not make it past this round we will not be disappointed because that is the nature of football,” Mbalula told safa.net. “AFCON is not the end in itself, it is a journey. “We are here to compete and play good football, and also weigh ourselves. “Just being here was a great achievement in itself and generally we are happy as a nation from what we have seen. “There is always next time. We will come back. But we will have exited with a wealth of experience.” –Sports24.co.za

Mbalula: AFCON not the end but a journey

Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung remains optimistic that captain Itumeleng Khune will sign a new contract before the end of the week. The talented goalkeeper's current contract expires in June and with big-spenders Mamelodi Sundowns having made their intentions clear of securing the services of the 27-year-old, Motaung said it was important to finalise the deal as quickly as possible."The discussions are going well and Khune and his representatives are aware of our intentions," Motaung said on Monday. "We value Khune a lot and it is important that both parties are on the same page. We should in the next few days be reaching an agreement and really there is no pressure because he knows where we stand as Chiefs." Vowing not to break the bank in order to keep a player who has been at

Chiefs for several years, Motaung said there was a policy at Chiefs when it came to negotiating contracts with players. "We are a professionally run club and structures are what makes Chiefs tick. "Our players are aware of our policies and Khune, who has been nothing less but a loyal servant, is aware how much Chiefs management value him."His brand is up there with the best and we look forward to having him at this club for years to come." The fact that Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter has included Khune in his 25-man CAF Champions League squad is an indication that Khune's future is at Amakhosi, Motaung claimed. Having returned to action after months on the sidelines due to injury, something that cost him a place at the Africa Cup of Nations with Bafana Bafana, Motaung was a happy man. Chiefs currently top the Premiership standings and having gone 18 league matches without tasting defeat, Motaung said Khune's presence and impact would be key going forward. "He will bring so much as we look to the second round which will not be easy. "We have put ourselves in a good position and having Khune at the moment where we need him the most, this will motivate other players." With Brilliant Khuzwayo having been good between the sticks for Chiefs, it remains to be seen who will take the number one position when the log-leaders resume their season. "It is important to continue where we left off after five weeks of inaction. "We also have the [Champions League] and Nedbank Cup to consider so we are excited about what lies ahead." –Sports24.co.za
