    The three witches suddenly appear onstage. They circle the cauldron, chanting spells and

    adding bizarre ingredients to their stew. Then Macbeth enters and asks the witches to

    reveal the truth of their prophecies to him. To answer his question, the witches summon

    horrible apparitions.

    First, a floating hand warns him to bewareMacduff.

    Second, bloody child appears and tells himnone woman born can harm him.

    Third, a crown child holding a tree tells him

    that he is safe until Birnam Wood moves toDunsinane Hill.

    Finally, a procession of eight crowned kingswalks by, the last carrying a mirror. Banqousghost walks at the end of the line.

    Macbeth demands to know the meaning ofthe clues but the witches perform a mad

    dance and vanish. Lennox enters and tells him that Macduff has

    fled to England.

    Macbeth then send murderers to captureMacduffs castle and kill his wife and children.

    At Macduffs castle, Lady Macduff asks Rosson why her husband has fled.

    Ross insists that he trusts her husbandsjudgment. Lady Macduff tells her son that his father has

    died but her son refused to believe it. Suddenly, a messenger appears and tells her

    that she is in danger and urged her to flee.

    Lady Macduff protests because she has donenothing wrong.

    A group of murderer enters and saysomething bad about Macduff.

    Macduffs son called the murderer a liar and

    the murderer stabs him. Lady Madcuff turns and runs and the

    murderers chase after her.

    Outside King Edward Palace, Malcolm speakswith Macduff, telling him that he does not

    trust him since he has left his family inScotland and may be secretly working forMacbeth.

    To determine whether Macduff is trustworthyor not, Malcolm rambles on about his ownvices.

    He admits that he wonders whether he is fitto be king as he is lustful, greedy and violent.

    At first, Macduff politely disagreed with it buthe cannot keep himself from crying out OScotland, Scotland.

    Macduffs loyalty to Scotland leads him toagree that Malcolm is not fit to governScotland or perhaps not even to live.

    A doctor appears briefly and mentions that a crew of wretched souls wait for King Edwardso they may be cured.

    When the doctor leaves, Malcolm explains toMacduff that King Edward has miraculous

    power to cure diseases. Ross enters, arrived from Scotland and told

    Macduff that his wife and son are well.

    He urges Malcolm to return to his country. Malcolm says that he will return with ten

    thousand soldier lent to him by English King. Ross then confessed to Macduff that

    Macbeth has murdered his wife and son.

    Lady Macduff feels betrayed. Ross insists that he is sure Macduff did the

    Once Ross leaves the place, Lady Macduff tellsher son that his father is dead, but the little

    boy perceptively argues that he is not.

    Outside King Edwards palace, Malcolm speaks to

    Macduff and told him that he does not trust him

    working secretly for Macbeth. Malcolm begins to ramble about he being fit to

    be the king since he is lustful, greedy and violent.

    Macduffcant stand it and tells Malcolm that heis not fit to be king. With this, Macduff passes
