Macca erri Gabion Mats are large rectangularbaskets that, when lled with rock, are used to providetough, long term erosion control solutions or high waterfow environments.

Gabion Mats are made rom Macca erris double twistedsteel wire mesh, proven worldwide or over 125 years too er strength, exibility, integrity, and longevity.

Gabion Mats o er fexible, permeable, naturally integratederosion protection in many applications:

    Streambank protection

    Channel linings

    Shorelines

    Culverts and ditches

    Bridge abutments

    Grade control structures

Because o their large size, Gabion Mats can be installedmuch more rapidly than regular gabions; less assemblyand erection is required or the same area o erosionprotection. This makes Gabion Mats particularly attractiveto construction pro essionals on large projects who want toincrease construction e fciency and value.

Gabion Mats integrate with their surroundings, encouragingthe preservation and restoration o the natural environment.Having 35% voids, the permeability and ltering capabilityo the rock ll allows soil, water, air, and vegetation tointeract. Vegetation can be established even more quicklyby integrating soil bioengineering techniques. Morein ormation can be ound on this by visiting our website,www.macca erri-usa.com or by requesting our SoilBioengineering brochure and manual.

Macca erri double twisted hexagonal wire mesh ismanu actured rom heavily galvanized steel wire, with atough PVC coating or additional protection.

The double twisted hexagonal mesh is very robust and can

accommodate large di erential settlements without rupturingor unraveling. Stresses in the mesh are dissipated in twodimensions throughout the mesh, even i wires are cut ordamaged! This is vital, particularly in critical in rastructureerosion control applications where there is the potential ordi erential settlement.

Macca erri so tware is available to design erosion protectionsolutions, including Gabion Mats. Our Macra1 so twareallows the user to check both unvegetated and vegetatedsolutions very easily.

    Design Considerations

Design the application by calculating the applied tractive

orce rom the water fow and selecting a Gabion Matwith the appropriate allowable shear resistance. Select

the mesh coating requirements.Install the Gabion Mat on a separation geotextile to

limit the washout o ne soil particles rom beneaththe mat.

In extreme fows, the Gabion Mat can also be installed

in combination with a gravel lter to o er a greaterinter ace limit velocity.Protect the toe o the slope rom undermining by

installing Gabion Mat units into the channel bed, below

the scour depth.Soil bioengineering vegetation techniques can be used

with Gabion Mats including: live staking, seeding, rooted

plants, and emergent aquatic plants. These techniquescan be implemented during or a ter the constructionphase, depending on site and seasonal constraints.NB: A designer cannot rely on vegetation for the

entire life of the structure. It could become diseased

or washed out by storm events. There ore, whendesigning channel linings with vegetation, be sure touse the residual channel shear resistance; i.e. with novegetation. As a ully vegetated channel is rougher than an

unvegetated one, the fow will slow down, and mayovertop the channel banks. A design check should becarried out to avoid this.

    Assembly and Installation

Macca erri Gabion Mats are delivered to the job site in rolls. The bases and lids are rolled separately. Base rolls appearlarger than lid rolls because o the diaphragms attached tothe base.

Unroll the Gabion mat base on or close to its nallocation.

Erect the sides, diaphragms, and end panels toorm open cells.

Connect panel edges using the appropriate lacingtechniques or asteners. Lacing: Continuouswire looped tightly around every mesh opening, alternating single and double loops. Fasteners: Use a pneumatic or hand tool, employing SpenaxC shaped asteners. For closure and strength, therecommended spacing is every mesh opening, notto exceed 6 (150 mm).

    Fasten internal diaphragms.

Fill the cells with suitable rock ll, beginning at thebottom o the slope using appropriate equipment.Hand placing is o ten necessary in the cell cornersto minimize the void volume. The mats should beover lled by 1 (25 mm) to allow or uture settlemento the rock ll.

Unroll the Gabion Mat lids over the rock- lled bases.Lids should be stretched/pulled tight so that themesh applies pressure to the rock ll con ning it.

Connect the lid to the sides, ends, diaphragms, andadjoining Gabion Mats.
