Meditation Sessions lead by Pedro Acedo

Continuing this Monday 19th of October 7pm to 7.30pm

Lower Church Hall/Dungeon

These sessions will follow the most ancient form of meditation in the Church, which has been preserved by Benedic t ine C o m m u n i t i e s d o w n t h e centuries. Each session will start with an introduction to assist in learning this type of prayer, which began when men and women went into the desert in Egypt to connect with the Spirit of Jesus and find a personal pathway to God. It is a place of silence; being open to God; waiting and listening. All parishioners are invited to come and participate. The Meditation Sessions are sponsored by the Friends of Jesus in Prison group.

Sessions will continue every Monday evening.

Give your child a life of choice

Fr. John says…… ‘They handed him a denarius, and he said, ‘Whose head is this? Whose name?’ ‘Caesar’s’ they replied. He then said to them, ‘Very well, give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar – and to God what belongs to God.’

The story is told of Louis XIV that he never wore gloves while out hunting. This was true even in very cold weather. A peasant was heard to remark on a very cold morning as the King rode past on a hunting trip, “His hands must be freezing,” but his friend replied, “Why should they be freezing? He always has his hands in our

pockets.” Kings, Queens and governments have all collected revenue from their constituents down the ages. Paying taxes has never been a favoured pastime for us humans, even when deep down we know it is necessary and even our duty. How else do we have roads, education, services and more? In the Lord’s time the imperial annual tax of one denarius on every individual from the age of puberty to sixty-five was much resented and the cause of riots in many parts of the realm. The Herodians (supporters of Herod) preferred collaboration with Rome by paying the tax, but the Pharisees saw it as an infringement of the divine right of God who alone was ruler of all. These two groups, though enemies, were united in their hatred of Jesus who was drawing people to himself and seemingly away from the control of the leaders. The two groups were out to entrap Jesus by asking a tricky legal question like, “Have you stopped being cruel to your dog?” To answer “Yes” or “No” will incriminate you. Jesus was clever enough to avoid such an answer and instead incriminated the Pharisees who should not have been carrying a Roman coin in the first place as it violated the Mosaic prohibition against images. We all have a civic duty to give back to the community and be responsible citizens. These days however, there are two issues for Christians.

The first is the lack of involvement in political matters by many Christians. For that matter most Australians seem to be slow in getting involved in politics. For instance, why do Catholics not receive a tax rebate for their school fees at private schools? Because no one is talking to their federal members about this. After all Catholic parents are contributing significantly to the total educational costs of the nation. Secondly, when the State makes laws that are contrary to the freedom of religion and worship, how should Christians respond? This is especially difficult in matters of morality. Again, it is important that Christians help shape the laws in these matters too. We are dual citizens, of heaven and Australia. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
