MADAGASCARAND REUNION 24 JUNE - 14 JULY 2018Ignacio Palacios – Richard l’Anson

MADAGASCAR

2 3

This fascinating island off the southeastern coast of Africa is a lot more than that the famous animated movie and lemurs. Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world so there is lots of unique things to see and to do since almost all of the flora and fauna on the island are unique to Madagascar. The unique ecology of Madagascar has led some scientists to refer to the country as the “eighth continent” of the world.

REUNION

4 5

Réunion Island (1h 20 mins by plane from Madagascar) is a French department in the Indian Ocean, known for its volcanic, rainforested interior, coral reefs and beaches. Its most iconic landmark is Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. An astonishing lunar landscape. Climbing up the Piton de la Fournaise reveals strange, stunning, but very accessible scenery. The Plaine des Sables, the Pas de Bellecombe mountain pass, craters and lava flows are just some of the magical places you will never forget.

INTRODUCTION With Richard and Ignacio, you will see this iconic land at its best and If your partner is not a keen photographer, we would invite you to bring her/him along as you will both enjoy the rich photo opportunities as well as an amazing cultural experience and natural wonders. With its light, wild landscapes and rich cultural heritage, Madagascar and Reunion will feed the imagination of any traveler/photographer.

Madagascar Madagascar is, above all, a nature destination. While there are certainly interesting man-made facets of the country such as colonial towns, native crafts, markets and sleepy coastal villages – Madagascar is an eco-traveller’s dream. From endless jungles filled with endemic plants, rare birds, and endangered animals, to white-sand beaches and limestone karst formations, the island is an explosion of nature.

Reunion Reunion is not all about photogenic landscapes. There’s plenty to compel culture photographers too. This French overseas territory offers a fascinating jumble of Creole, African, Indian, Chinese and French influences that was created by centuries of immigration. There’s a wealth of architectural treasures, historic sites, delightful religious and colonial buildings and vibrant festivals that are a great occasion to immerse oneself in local culture. A smattering of top-notch museums round out the offerings.

If you arrive early in the morning into Antananarivo it’s worth touring around the capital city of Madagascar whilst we recover from the jet-lag. Antananarivo was as built in 1610 and it is the economic and political capital of Madagascar and situated at the heart of the island.

Photograph its daily craft markets, and buildings including the old city where we find Christian buildings dating from the 1800s and the historic monuments of central Imerina.

DAY 2 - Monday 25 June, Antananarivo to Morondava – Avenue of BaobabsTransfers to airport and flight to Morondava. Transfer to Palissandre Cote Quest Hotel.

Morondava is famous for the spectacular Avenue of the Baobabs. It’s a row of about 20 – 25 imposing Baobab trees along some 260 meter long stretch of dirt road and in the nearby pastures between Morondava and Belo Tsiribihina. These giant baobab trees are a 800 year-old legacy of the dense tropical forests that once stood here. Over the years, as the country’s population grew, the forests were steadily cut down, leaving only the baobab trees, which the locals preserved for religious reasons. It has been a center of local conservation efforts and was granted temporary protected status, the first step toward making it Madagascar’s first natural monument.

In the afternoon we will explore the Mangroves on a dugout Canoe and a fishermen village. Betania, island.

Night at Palissandre Cote Quest Hotel.

DAY 3 - Tuesday 26 June, drive to Bekopaka (198 km) with transfer by ferry boat through Belo sur Tsiribihina.Stop at the Baobab Avenue en route and lunch at Mad Zebu restaurant.

It is home to a number of animal species, including 11 types of lemur including the unique Decken’s sifaka, The Red-fronted brown lemurs, and the critically endangered Madagascar fish-eagle. The Manambola river canyon which forms the southern boundary of the park is simply breathtaking and magnificent.

“ Madagascar was settled by Asians (before mainland Africans) that came from the island of Borneo (which now belongs to the people of Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia). Over the next hundred years or so Africans, Asians and Europeans began to settle in Madagascar, each bringing with them their own cultures and traditions, many of which are still observed today.”

Both parts belonged to the same humid forest, but because of human activities are now divided in two. The park was created in 1989. Due to its closeness to the capital and the good road condition all year round almost all visitors to Madagascar will choose to come here to follow the Indri call, which is the star of the park.

DAY 8 - Sunday 1 July, Andasibe National ParkAfternoon visit to Mitsinjo private reserve and Nocturnal walk around the reserve.

Andasibe National Park is the most visited of the Protected Areas. This national park actually comprises two parts: The Mantadia Park and the Analamazaotra reserve of Indri.
