The schedule for the weekend is as follows:

Friday 26 July1400 Greensboro I v Greensboro II1700 Menwith Hill Pirates v Great Britain

Following the successful trip made by the GreatBritain squad to Greensboro, North Carolinalast year, two teams from Greensboro will thisyear visit the UK to compete with the followingteams in the World Friendship Series:

It was a shame for either team to lose, however it willbe Leeds who will meet Windsor in the National Finalto be played in Birmingham on 13 July.

In the ninth Calderdale had to being in a reliever, andLeeds immediately took advantage scoring four runsmaking the score 6-2. However in the bottom of theninth, Calderdale struck back with three making thescore 6-5, but the Leeds team hung on to win, bystriking the last two Calderdale batters out.

This created a final between Calderdale and Leeds, which was the best game I have seen at any level thisseason.

The game scheduled for five innings started withLeeds jumping to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. However, Calderdale struck back in the third levellingthe scores. The scores remained at 2-2 through fiveinnings, and going into extra innings. At the end ofeight it was still tied at 2-2.

In a three way toumament, both Leeds and Calderdalewon comfortably over Bridlington, who are in their firstyear of playing baseball, and improved with everyinning. ...

The three qualifiers for the toumament were:

The Northem Zone Toumament was held at SouthHalifax High School's new fully furbished baseballdiamond. The field was constructed by students fromthe school, including a shale infield, pitcher's mound, backstop and a scoreboard. This is probably the bestyouth diamond in the country.

Barry MayfieldOld Timers Baseball Club

For me it all began in 1953, I was 13years of age, and I was bat boy for HullCity Police, brother "Albert" played 1stbase, and the team was run by DonNicholson and played at the InglemireLane Sports Ground.

The highlight that year for mewas a game arrangedbetween the Police andAmerican ship "SS Orian". Ithad a 3 day visit to Hull andequipment was sent forward

as the arrangements had been madewhen the ship was half way here.

Coming to the last day, Don Nicholsonsaid to me "get ready, we need a batter, you're it". Chest stuck out like a turkeycock I marched out for my very first bat inbaseball. First pitch "whack" a line drive.Well it went somewhere. I stole secondwith blistering speed, hit and run I wentfor third. Albert waved me roundshouting "go for it Ron" and head down Iheaded for home. The ball came in to thecatcher who swiveled to the left, ball inglove and the lights went out, right underthe chin. We had a great time when thegame finished and my head had clearedl

The police then got the best bargain inhistory. The bloke in charge of the"Orian" men asked if we would buy thekit, as they would not really need it again. The question "how much"? "How manycigarettes have you got"? A quick whipround, Don said "about 200". "Sold it'syours"!

Since then no other sport has comeclose. Everything revolves aroundbaseball. In those days we had somecompetition, Giants, Eagles, Diamonds(Kingston), Royals, Aces, Pirates,Panthers, Brough Bombers Reckitts andwe travelled to Stretford Saints and Aces,

Moving on further to about 1989, I wasplaying first base for Sutton Bravesversus the Barnes Bamestormers. Atthis time Barnes were under the strictmanagement of Glen Libby and wereimpeccably drilled and turned out. a sightto behold. They had been on thediamond for a couple of hours practising.Sutton, on the other hand, turned up ausual about ten minutes before gametime, looking somewhat like refugees.By game time Sutton had only eightplayers and I was batting eight, thereforeevery time I came to bat with two out(which was frequently) I was walked andthe automatic out ended the innning, untilabout a third of the way through thegame, when the Barnes pitcher namedJulian Dodwell, decided to pitch to me.He fired the ball towards the outside ofthe plate and I thinking 'here's the walkagain' stook my ground. The ball howvertook a violent curve inward and struck myforearm, breaking it cleanly (although Idid not know this at the time). I took myBB and stole 2nd and at the end of theinning went out to field on first. By thistime I was unable to hold my glove upproperly, so was moved to right I rightcentre (remember we only had eight

To 1964 when I was playing for theSutton PearlyKings (forerunners of theSutton Braves). A certain Americannamed Tony Mooy and myself generallyshared the pitching and catching and onthis particular day Tony had started onthe mound. At about the fifth inning theManager, Bert Baker, signalled for Tonyto take over the catching chores from meand I went on the mound. I had a dozenor so pitches after which Tony yelled'coming down' and fired the ball tosecond - WRONG, it ended up in shortextreme right field. Tony had actuallybroken his arm during the throw .

There are many stories to be told with the likes ofRon Marshall, Frank Parker, (Red) Wilf Holmes,Clive Megson, Pirates coach Maciver. I will neverforget my first year in baseball. One other greatthrill for me was March 1995 when I received myvery first Brit-Ball.

Birmingham and another side, Liverpool Aces andTrojans, 2 teams in Nottingham returning fromthese games stopping at Thome into the pub. I wasplaying for Royals until around 1959/60 when DonSmallwood and the committee found a slip inregistrations and teams. It was decided toadvertise for players to start a new side. In the "HullDaily Mail" went the advert. Anyone interested toattend Windmillhotel, Witham. Niine people turnedup, eight thought it was basketball, the ninth had noidea why he came. A new team was born in 1960"Hull Cardinals", coached by myself, and one ofEngland's top pitchers Alan Asquith, started hiscareer. After one season in Hull we then moved toHessle.

were ready I took them outand proudly showed themoff. After three years I wassacked. I wouldn't get thechance to serve them up.Before I could finish thedream the life support wasswitched off.

Please let us know before 14 July ofany clubs that wish to take partbecause the number of entrants islimited from 8 to 12 teams.

We will be highly honoured if theclubs of your federation agree totake part in this tournament.

Dear Brit-Ball

I planned, I reviewed and I replanned and I set my goals. Wewould have a team to be proud of. Ateam that would contain a youngcrop of players. Players proud ofwhat they are now on the verge ofachieving. GB would gain promotionback to the A group in 1996. TheBBF gave me four years to do it.Four years to get hold of enoughtalented 14-16 year olds who byAugust 1996 would be good enough- and ready.

I planted the seeds. I watered them, protected them. I even had to dig afew over. I watched them blossom.I picked them, moulded them and putthem in the oven to rise. When they

'Not a lot of people know this' - asthey say, but on two occasions (thatI instantly recall) I nearly came to thestated phrase "life extinct", or at leastit felt like that. On the first occasionI was so low it felt my world hadcome to an end. On the second thevery stuff I breathe, that that flowsthrough my veins, my heartbeat, wastaken away. The life support systemwas unceremoniously, callously, switched off.

On a clear evening in a suburb ofRome my team had humiliatedthemselves, me and their Country. Isat on a bench in a part near to thedormitory and then on the steps tothe sleeping block 'til 6am (the gamehad finished at 9pm the previousevening) contemplating. I was low.Immediately after the game aninterested party - spectating on theoccasion expressed shame of beingBritish, by all means be ashamed ofwhat he had just witnessed. Duringthat' long vigil of life slipping away Iran that spectator's words over andover again in my mind. Ashamed tobe British. I vowed then to put prideto the top of the agenda. It wouldmean doing things that would makeme unpopular but everything andeveryone connected with me wouldhave pride. I would start again.Build from the bottom. Work allhours I could to re-build and hope, one day, that same spectator wouldsay to me - "I am proud, proud to beBritish, proud of our team".
