In July, the City received a generous donation of over 15,000 masks and other PPE from Madera’s Sister City, Yilan, Taiwan. This incredible act of kindness has allowed the City to provide much needed support to several community agencies and local businesses amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Cooling centers aide in providing residents in need with a means of staying cool and hydrated during dangerous heat waves. The City recently took the wraps off of a new Sharps kiosk in front of Fire Station 56. Sponsored by Mid Valley Disposal and installed by Healthwise, with assistance from the City’s fire and public works departments, the new kiosk makes it easier than ever for community members to dispose of needles and sharps safely. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, more than 3 billion medical sharps are discarded annually outside of formal health care settings. California law prohibits the disposal of sharps waste in the regular trash or recycling bin. Improper disposal of sharps waste poses a risk to children, pets and trash collectors who may accidentally get stuck by a needle, syringe or lancet and be exposed to a disease such as hepatitis, tetanus or HIV. A process and plan years in the making became reality in July, as the California Community Colleges Board of Governors voted unanimously to recognize Madera Community College (MCC) as the 116th campus of the state’s community college system.

La eliminación inadecuada de los desechos de objetos punzantes representa un riesgo para los niños, las mascotas y los recolectores de basura que pueden encajarse accidentalmente con una aguja, jeringa o lanceta y exponerse a una enfermedad como la hepatitis, el tétano o el VIH.

Un proceso y un plan de años en la fabricación se hicieron realidad en julio, cuando la Junta de Gobernadores de los Colegios Comunitarios de California votó unánimemente para reconocer al Colegio Comunitario de Madera (MCC) como el colegio 116 del sistema de universidades comunitarias del estado.

“Ha sido un honor para mí trabajar junto a estudiantes, profesores, personal y administradores para lograr este logro histórico y excelente para nuestro colegio y comunidad”, dijo el presidente del Colegio Comunitario de Madera, Angel Reyna. “Ha sido un esfuerzo colectivo y colaborativo, y espero con ansias el trabajo continuo para servir mejor a nuestros estudiantes como universidad”.

Con la nueva designación, el Colegio Comunitario de Madera ya no es un colegio satélite, y ahora recibirá fondos para programas adicionales y personal. También es elegible para la competición atlética dentro de la Asociación Atlética del Colegio Comunitario de California

(CCCAA), y ya no está bajo el paraguas

del Colegio de Reedley, que ha estado ayudando con las operaciones diarias. Centro del Colegio Comunitario de Oakhurst continuará trabajando y compartiendo recursos con MCC. La acreditación inicial fue otorgada por la Comisión de Acreditación para Colegios Comunitarios y Colegios Juveniles en junio.
