VehiclesCars play an important role in Mafia. In Lost Heaven a vehicleis the quickest and easiest method of getting around. Eachvehicle has its own characteristics (which can be viewed in theCarcyclopedia) that effect the handling when driving.Vehicles will also behave differently depending on the numberof passengers and the surface that the vehicle is currentlytravelling on.

When driving aroundLost Heaven youshould avoid collisionswith other vehiclesand objects, as thesecan damage thevehicle, yourself andany passengers that arein the vehicle. Tirescan be punctured, effecting the handling of the vehicle, headlights will stopworking and fall off, and having a high-speed collision couldcause the engine to catch fire or the gas tank to explode. It isalso possible to lose gas should the gas tank get damaged orpunctured. If this happens you will notice the gas tank gaugerapidly decrease until the car comes to a halt.

NOTE: A car may seem to be a safe place to be during a gunfight, but if the gas tank is hit youre almost certainly going togo up in flames.

Obtaining CarsTommy receives cars for each mission from Ralph, the family'smechanic. During the course of the game more modern andpowerful cars become available as the years go by. Ralph also showsTommy how to steal the make and model of car that he provides.Once Tommy has learned how to do this he can steal these modelswhen out on the streets in Lost Heaven.

To steal a vehicle, stand next to thedrivers door and hold down theright mouse button.

The time it takes to unlock a vehiclevaries on the make and model. Aprogress bar will appear at thebottom of the screen, once this isfull the vehicle will be unlocked. Ifyou move or release the rightmouse button while stealing a carthe progress bar will reset and youwill have to start over.

It is also possible for Tommy tocar-jack vehicles that are beingdriven on the streets by thecitizens of Lost Heaven. Forexample, approach a vehicle whenit has stopped at a set of trafficlights and open the drivers dooras described above to throw outthe driver. You will only be able todo this if Ralph has previouslyshowed you how to steal thatparticular make and model.

NOTE: Stealing cars is anoffence, so be aware of

    patrolling police nearby.

NOTE: While this may benecessary because of your

situation, some drivers willnot be happy at you tryingto steal their vehicle and

    may retaliate.

of gas that is in vehicles you steal, asyou do not want to run out of gaswhen being chased by enemies or thepolice.

To fill upthe vehicle, drive into the gas stationwith the left side of the vehicleadjacent to the pump and then pressthe right mouse button to bring upthe option menu to choose to fill itup. FrankFrank is Don Salieri's best friend, associate andadvisor. His main concern is family finance and thelegal side of business. He is well suited to this. At first sight he doesn't seem to belong amongthese criminals, as he is a very quiet andinconspicuous nice guy. He does his work mainlybecause of an attachment to Don Salieri, as well astheir mutual past. They grew up together in a poorquarter and thanks to the Don he gained most ofwhat he has, so he can't just turn his back on him.If he'd grown up in any other place he wouldcertainly be a successful lawyer or businessman.

VincenzoVincenzo has worked for the family for along time and it means everything to him. It's strange that such a good guy likeVincenzo found his greatest love in guns, but that's why he takes care of Salieri'sarsenal of weapons and selects the bestequipment for a mission.

NormanNorman is the typical example of a detectivebrought up through the school of hard knocks. He is a scruffy, tough guy, who acts like hehates everybody around him. Tom tells him hisstory, but doesnt get much sympathy.

Don SalieriThe Don is the boss of the family that Tommyworks for. He's a guy who's lived through alot and doesn't get excited too easily. He'stypical of a Mafioso, who hasn't built up hisposition just for money and doesn't always killto get what he wants. He is friendly, but when he gets tough he canbecome dangerous. Sometimes business ismore important than friendship to him.

PauliePaulie is Tom's sidekick, an energetic and hot-tempered guy, who sometimes behavescompletely unexpectedly. If he likes somebodyhe is the most loyal friend you could have, someone you can always rely on; if he doesn'tcause you problems that is. Tom and Paulie arethe greatest of friends and often work and havefun together.

SamSam is another associate of Toms. At first sight,he just looks like an average guy with a friendlysmile. He is big and sometimes clumsy. He is alsoshy and doesnt talk a lot. He often works withTom and Paulie and they are good friends.

MorelloMorello is Salieri's main adversary. Where Salieriopts for negotiation, Morello uses an army ofmen with Thompsons.

Where Salieri punishes treachery, Morelloindiscriminately shows his might. Because of thishe has a big influence in the city, which he istrying to extend into Salieri family territory. Heis greatly helped by his brother Sergio. However,he ultimately destroys everything hes involved inthrough his overly brutal behaviour.

Lucas BertoneLucas is a pleasant Italian of middle age and acar mechanic for the rich. He is very big-hearted even though, in view of the services heprovides to the Mafia, he is no saint.

NOTE: Although not part of the Salierifamily its often worth visiting Lucas whenyou have spare time as unlike Ralph, Lucasswork means that he has access to some of themore luxurious and exotic cars in the city.

CreditsRalphRalph is excellent when it comes to dealingwith vehicles. He can take apart, repair, improve and then rebuild whatever he gets hishands on, but that's about it. His worldrevolves around anything on four wheels, andhe knows little about anything else. That's whyhe'll only talk about vehicles, though evenconversations about vehicles aren't easy for him.
