First of all, I would like to thank all of our PP of IA members who

continue to support our great organization . Especially those who

donate their time in helping us put on such great conventions that we

have each and every year . Without our volunteers this organization

would not be as great as it is .

I have had many diff erent thoughts as I prepared for writing the

president’s message . I wonder how many people even read them .

This makes me wonder if I should even continue with writing it . So

with that said, all I want to say is thank you and have a great year! -

PS . (for those of you who do read them)

Many people through the years have inspired me . I truly believe that

print competition is the best thing you can do for your business . For me, it has pushed me to want

to be better, chasing after some of the best photographers in the nation that are right here in our

own state . I want to encourage anyone that hasn’t entered print competition before and are just

scared to death to enter, to fi nd a mentor through our mentor program and get a jump on your

“competition” through the PPI print competitions that we off er .

Your current board has been working hard in adapting some new and exciting changes for the

Professional Photographers of Iowa . One of the most exciting changes is bundling our fees to make

it benefi cial for everyone to pay for their dues and convention fees all at once . Many of our current

members come from a studio with 2 or more photographers . By purchasing the 2 person studio

bundle you can save $101 off your current annual fees .

We are also incorporating some slight changes in your convention formats . We are going to move

our photogenic entries back to the Fall Event, along with the Image Panel Competition, to help

shorten up the Winter Convention Banquet .

In closing, I want to promote both our upcoming events . Please make sure your calendars are

marked . To start off , the Fall Event is October 27th & 28th at the Airport Holiday Inn in Des Moines .

Along with a great trade show we are going to have Rodney & Jody Gehman, Troy and Heidi

Eiff ert, and Dan & Alex McClanahan with the “Business Dating Game,” which will be hosted by Lori

Nordstrom . This program will kick off our event in the afternoon and should be very entertaining,

along with the great knowledge coming out of these super photographers . That evening Dan &

Alex will be speaking on weddings . Then on Monday we will have the Photoshop guru Richard

Sturdevant showing us all the new tricks . This will be hands on in the afternoon so bring your

laptops! Bob Hawkins and Toni Johnson will be our early bird program that morning with

“Competition College 2014” . Another avenue to help you get out of the “I am too scared to enter

print competition” mode .

Our annual Winter Convention runs from February 7 through 11th at the Airport Holiday in in Des

Moines . Along with print competitions and trade show, we have a great lineup of talent . Included in

that list are Wendy Veugeler (the top scoring case in the North Central District this past convention),

she will be our Add-On Day speaker for Friday the 7th and Saturday the 8th . Along with Wendy we

have, Christie Kline, Peter Yu, Eric O’Connor, Chuck Arlund, Joy Vertz, Dan Frievalt, Jaron Horrocks,

Brian Morrison, Nancy Poole, Thom Rouse, Jessica Vogel, Jeremy Wieczorek, and our own Dan & Brit

Meythaler and Kim LaFauce .

As always, this is a great event to enjoy the hospitality with your fellow photographers and to get

geared up for the new year .

Our utmost goal as a board and your representative for the PP of Iowa, is to give you the most bang

for your buck and we hope to continue this tradition of great value both this year and in the future .

Have a safe and prosperous year .

Hello, I am Lisa Rohlk from Springfield, South Dakota, the newest board member . You may ask why a board member from SD? Well let me give you a little history about myself .

I was born and raised in Springfield, SD and fell in love with photography in 4-H . I had just graduated from high school and was working part time at our little grocery store, when a photographer came in to photograph children in the back room . After asking countless questions, she asked if I would like a job and so my career as a photographer began! For the next 4 years I worked at many studios, Despain Portraits, Photography by Jerry, Classic Clicks, Claussen Photography, Highfill Portrait Studio and Highfill School Portraits, with one goal in mind – to be the person behind the camera . I learned lots of different aspects of running a studio from developing, to costumer service, to framing, to production work, but if they didn’t have a place for me to be a photographer, I moved on . That is how I found Don Knop at Knop Photography in Ida Grove, IA . Don was not only an awesome photographer, but a great teacher and had a passion for learning anything new . He not only let me get behind the camera, but also allowed me to learn and challenged me to be a better photographer . Through him, I became involved in PPI . This association became very special to me and taught me many, many things . I looked forward to every convention and loved volunteering at whatever they needed someone to do . From photographing, to helping set up trade show, working on print crew, and even bartending, I have met fellow photographers that have become good friends . Even today, PPI makes me a better photographer from the speakers to the networking with photographer friends .

Ten years ago, I moved back to Springfield, SD and started my own studio, Signature Studios by Lisa, three miles from where I grew up! My studio is in the country on our little farm with lots of outdoor locations . I have been married to my husband, Travis, for 9 years and have two beautiful stepchildren, Erika 21 and Blaine 18 . I enjoy anything outside – from riding my 3 horses, playing with our dogs, hiking, golfing, camping, and spending time with family .

When PPI opened up their membership to anyone out of state, I re-joined right away! I am a Certified Professional Photographer and am working towards my Masters . I realize the association would not be what it is without all that the Board members do . I am honored they asked me to be on it and will give all that I can to continue making it the awesome association that it is!

Beside me is a senior couple waiting for a plane to Ottawa . She sits with her head resting on his shoulder and naps . Their hands are intertwined on his lap and he looks as content as a man can be . Seeing this makes me smile . Nearby, two little boys about four, maybe five years old are playing a game where the loser has to carry the “Little Mermaid” back pack their mother brought for their boys toys . The older son is making the most of it . The younger is just annoyed! There’s a sad-looking woman with bright red hair and a Yorkie on a leash . She is pacing as she tries to quiet the dog so people will stop staring at her . Judging from her body language she must was acutely aware of the fact they were drawing a lot of attention . Sleeping against a post are two teenaged kids with their headphones plugged into their ears and Ipods plugged into a power outlet between their hips . Their toes are touching and their hands are gently stacked one on top of the other . A 30-something mother is trying to get her son and daughter to sit down so she can take a picture of them . Of course, they seem to want nothing to do with that “picture” thing . Yet, they are enjoying every second of torment they are causing their mother! SHE is enjoying the interplay while trying to act annoyed so the kids don’t notice that she’s not angry at all . Beyond them is a VERY senior woman who was dressed in a classy pant suit and her make-up was applied to perfection . She was behind me during screening and told the young TSA worker that the picture on her ID really was her even though it made her look like “A trapeze artist that crash landed on her face!” Everyone around her laughed at her self-effacing comment . Two rows over there is a middle-aged woman who’s been crying the whole time that I’ve been here . She seems inconsolable despite the attempts of several well-intentioned strangers to help her . Her traveling companion, a young woman who was nursing a baby barely spoke to her . Their destination was Greensboro . After a brief nap, I was awakened by a boy saying, “Excuse me, do you like Angry Birds?” I told him I had never played the game so he gave me a tutorial on the Star Wars version . He was such a bright child who told me was six and in kindergarten . He was with his mother, a classy young woman raising a handsome son on her own . They shared a home on Price Edward Island . And perhaps, standing out more than any individual in the terminal was a man who stood tall and straight - 6’5” if not more . He was dressed in military utilities with a fresh haircut . Along side was a duffle bag stuffed and bulging at the seams . In his arms was a beautiful teddy bear half as big as he! I could only imagine he was heading home to see someone who loved him . Every one of these people could have been my customer . As I thought about the people around me at the airport something as clear as a lightning bolt struck me - I’ve been blessed to have a love of people as my mother did and to work in a profession that allows me to experience many of life’s twists, turns & experiences with my customers . Nothing

sparks a memory quite like a picture . Whether it’s a portrait of two playful kids who don’t want a picture together, a single mother and her son, brothers who squabbled, a fancy senior lady or a loving couple, we mark those times when life is moving fast and can’t be stopped . When we create a portrait of a woman and her dog who is her best friend in the whole world and goes everywhere with her, the young love of teenagers, a soldier and his family or the impact of grief on survivors we serve a greater good . We provide a pathway to the past that endures through the portraits we make . From time to time I am accidentally reminded as I was today that our services and products are precious and meaningful to our customers . It lifts my heart to be in a profession that blesses me with that knowledge and feeds my body and soul . Bob Hawkins

Ask yourself this question, what are your digital assets worth to you?

Putting together a successful backup solution for your home oce or studio is essential to guard against the ever increasing exposure of risk we take in a digital industry.

You, as a photographer, invest countless hours working with customers, learning the cra of photography and pursuing the ever elusive

perfect image. is time and eort is invaluable and irreplaceable. You may have on your computer the images of a newborn child, a wedding couple during their vows or the last photo ever taken of a loved one.

Step back from the photographs and look at the digital assets you use with your business everyday. You rely on your email, accounting soware, contracts, model release forms, templates and many other work les that are essential to what you do.

When was the last time you made a backup copy of these? You have to be honest with yourself if you haven’t done this within the last week you may be risking more than your business can aord to recover from. I nd it alarming that more than half of the photographers I ask this question tell me that they don’t have any kind of backup solution. e excuses range from “I don’t know how”, “I don’t have time” or my personal favorite “It will never happen to me”.

ere are many factors that may contribute to data loss ranging anywhere from a hardware malfunction to

being infected by a computer virus to weather related damage. Add in the human factor and you can just as quickly overwrite or delete les without ever realizing it.

You really need to stop and think about what it would cost you both in time and nances to replace what you would lose on your computer if it stopped before you nish reading this sentence. You cannot underestimate

or ignore the risk potential that exists with the way you handle your digital assets in todays digital workow.

Now that you are thinking about panicking it’s time to take a deep breath. ere is hope for all those billions of data bits stored on your computer’s hard drive. If you don’t already have a backup solution for your photography business there is no better time than now to put one together.

Every business is unique with its own set of challenges related to computer hardware and soware. While there is no magic tune to take care of the backup blues you may now be experiencing it is important that you use what you learn here and put it towards making a backup solution of your own. Yes this even means investing in hiring someone to help implement it if you don’t have time or don’t know how.

I have put together ve guidelines to help you along your path to backup bliss. ese guidelines will help you dene a new backup solution or can be used to strengthen a solution you already have in place.

1. Be Organized. One of the best things you can do to simplify your backup solution and workow in general is to be able to nd, save and retrieve your work.

e easiest thing you can do is adopt the date and name standard for the naming of both les and folders. is is an easy to use format in the form of YYYYMMDD-lename. I like to create folders for each of my photo sessions using this format so that I know the contents of the folder are related to the identied session date and customer. en within each master folder you can organize your work further with the use of subfolders.

is format is also great to use with any other le or collection of les you store on your computer. Once you adopt it you will nd yourself organizing and naming individual customer les, oce documents, contracts, marketing pieces and much more. My wife compares it to getting to play with the label maker in our oce.

2. Choose the Right Device for the Job.I recommend that you choose a solution that uses hard drives. e size and scope of the projects you work with make the storage capacity and ease of transferring data ideal for hard drive centric solutions. You can backup all of your digital assets to one hard drive or a collection of hard drives which is convenient, reliable and cost eective.

Several popular brands that I have found other studios use include Drobo, Synology and ReadyNas. ese hard drive enclosures come empty or pre-installed with hard drives of your choice. is allows for dierent size congurations that t your business needs today with room to grow in the future.

All of these brands include additional advantages such as drive redundancy to prevent down time, easy connectivity to your computer and simple soware interfaces to interact with them for backup purposes.

3. Make Your Backup Redundant. It is important that you make a two copies of your original data in two separate locations as soon as possible. is will

minimize the chance of losing all of your work to a single piece of equipment failing.

You should keep this original copy led as a clean copy of your work and make a duplicate of the data before you work with it. is way if you accidentally overwrite or corrupt your working copy you will have a clean copy to come back to. In the worst case scenario you can rebuild the work you have done.

4. Keep Your Copies Separate. It is worth your time to keep a copy of your work o-site. is will add another level of insurance in the case something catastrophic happens to your home or studio. In the event that your home or studio goes up in a re and you lose everything including your backup then you are no better o than someone that didn’t even choose to backup their work. You should rotate a copy of your current backup o-site to your home or a bank safe deposit box at least once a week. is way no matter what comes your way you will only have to makeup at most seven days of work in the case of a disaster.

5. Be Diligent. Your backup solution is only as good as the last time you put it into action. It is critical that you integrate practices to support your backup solution into your everyday workow. You need to also periodically check the integrity of the backups you create to verify that you can still retrieve data from them and that they have not themselves become corrupt. ere are no excuses when it comes to protecting what you have invested into your business.

Now it is up to you to put together a backup solution that is right for your business. Remember that doing something, anything in the way of backing up your digital assets is better than doing nothing at all. ere is nothing wrong by starting out with the most aordable backup solution you can aord and then growing into a more complete solution as income allows.

I challenge you to become as passionate about your digital assets as I am. Your clients will love you for it and the fact that you are professional enough to care can be a selling point in itself.

Have you ever wondered about photographers walking around at the convention with all those dangles hanging around their neck? Not sure what it is all about or maybe you know but are just not sure how to get your own . Well here is the answers you have been looking for .

There are two awards, Service Award and Fellow of Photography . Let’s look at the service portion first . Service is one of the most important parts of keeping our organization running . Without the help of the members who step forward each year to assist in making all the parts and pieces of the convention happen, it would not be possible to have the programs and speakers we have each winter and fall . You have seen some of these volunteers in the past when you arrive at a program and you are greeted and receive your raffle ticket . These folks have volunteered to help and also it is a way to insure you are in the room for a program you want to see . Yes, we will try to assign you to a program you want to see .

Another place you see volunteers but may not realize is when you checked in at registration . The folks that insure the correct name badge, tickets and other material are in your packet . Also there is print crew . This is one of the most coveted in the service area . If you want to learn about the print competition side this is where you can learn . You will be in direct proximity of each print and in the perfect position to hear word for word what the judges say about the prints . There are also committees that you can become a part of that work throughout the year . Since service is such a vital part of our organization, there is an award for those that assist time and time again but do not enter in the print competition . This award is presented at the winter convention for those members who have accumulated 25 points for their service . To receive this award you cannot have any print award points .

The Fellow of Photography is made of two segments within its self . Those are service and print awards . The service is the same as the above criteria, but the print awards are for entering the print competition where you receive points for distinguished prints (score of 80+) or being named first, second or third place in a print category . Additional points can be earned for having your print case (all four prints) scores a total amount that is one of the top ten cases . Awards are given for the best in show wedding image (Don Knopp Award) and best of show print (Medlar Award) .

As you accrue points in both the service and print areas, you will first receive the Associate Fellow of Photography . This award is a framed certificate that can be displayed in your studio and is awarded when you have obtained a total of 25 points (8 of these must be earned as service and 8 as print awards) . These 25 point will be counted as part of the points need to earn the Fellow of Photography . You will need an additional 25 points to receive the Fellow and of these 15 points must be service and 15 print awards . Upon attaining the 50 points you be presented the Fellow of Photography Medallion to be worn at PPI events . You can earn additional 25 point bars as you continue to build your point totals with the Diamond Award being achieved at the 200 point level . As you reach each 25 point level you will be recognized at the Winter Convention for all your peers to see your achievements and your photo taken to be displayed in the Action Newsletter . Join us as in working together and building your deserved place in the spotlight as an important member of the Professional Photographers of Iowa .

Below you can find the list of awards and ways that point are awarded .
