Masthead: The distinctive masthead used saying ‘RollingStone’ is very
eye catching. This is because of the bright bold colours used and the vibrancy shown with the white outline and black shadow. This ensures the masthead is eye
catching and can be seen on the shelf easily. This particular magazine
is also very big and well known suggesting it is more likely to get
more reception than others.
Cover lines: The cover lines used are of a similar font and the same colour blending in with each other.
It could have been more eye catching if the cover lines they wanted the audience to notice
more were in a different colour., preferably red to match the
adopted colour scheme. However it is clear they have used a much
bigger font for the cover line that matches the cover image defining
the image of Justin.Layout: The margin gives the
magazine a orderly format. It is in a “Z” layout so you instantly read from left to right. Colour schemes
are red, black and white, which are simplistic, mature and appealing.
Photography: This is a coloured photograph of teen pop star
Justin Bieber. It is a mid close up shot, showing his upper body
and very little background captivating him alone as the
central and focal point. Furthermore Justin has one of
the biggest fan bases suggesting more people will buy
this magazine just because of the fact that Justin is on the
cover. The magazine characterises Justin as toned, “Hot Ready Legal” in images through Mise en scene, in this
case his vest top. Although choosing Justin will attract the female audience more so than
the male audience it could interest some men if they dress
in a similar way.
Colour Palette: The colour palette used on this font cover is for the most part incredibly bold and defiant. With the
addition of the bold white writing which adds to the effect of itv standing out. The way in which RollingStones
have done this colour palette is very clever as the colours on Justin Bieber seem to be very simplistic and
neutral however the bold red an white writing electrifies your eyes. It makes the magazine seem more interesting
and fun.
The date is located at the top of the page underneath the masthead so it is easy to find. The issue number is located at the bottom of
the page as well as the page number. There is a
website link also along the bottom of the page.
The text on this contents page is limited but the
features are described in more detail than in other magazines. The contents is organised into different
sections and only the main articles are shown.
The fonts are different and some of them may be
seen as feminine so this may appeal to more females then men.
Three images are used and not all of them are music related which implies this
magazine talks about more than just music. However
the two that are music related are larger which
could show that the magazine does prioritise music over anything else.
The only writing over these images is page numbers so
that the reader can see what article this image is
related to.
The masthead is positioned at the top of the page and takes up a small section. The font style looks simple but
professional and is white against a red background.
Headline: As you can see the headline here
is “The triumph of Adele” this is used as a short summary to what is in the main article. They should never be too long to give away too much
to what is in the article. As the article in this magazine is about Adele part of the headline is a lot
bigger than the other words to indicate that
it i about her. The colours are quite dark,
therefore the black font contrasts against the grey background.
Stand First: The stand first is a short, small piece of text,
which acts as like a summary to engage the reader. Also it
helps the reader to gauge what the piece of text or the article is all about. Usually two or four lines long but not too in depth.
Main Article: The main article is the article which relates to the main feature story on the front of a magazine. The main article is always in columns to
make it look more professional and neater.
Drop Cap: Which is usually a block or large first letter is
there to indicate the start of a new section. Also used in
novels, books etc. The black drop cap in this article is black to adhere the house style of
this article.
Main Image: The main image of a double
page spread usually takes up one full page
and is usually the artist the article is
about. As you can see Adele's facial
expressions are quite intimate and serious, to connate that she is achieving her dream and symbolises the passion she has for music. The picture
used is a close up of her face to show that she is the main focus
point.
Masthead: The masthead is in front of the image of
Beyonce, this is because the picture is close up so its very bold and they wouldn't have
been able to put the masthead behind her head because you wouldn't be able to see it at all. I think the masthead looks very professional and its eye catching from the bright
colours used.
Photography: The image of Beyonce is a close up shot and is the optical centre as that's where my eyes are looking straight on which
will also catch the attention of readers, like
she's drawing the audience in.
The header has been placed appropriately as it isn't
covering her face but will still catch the attention from
fans/readers. The colours and scale of text looks bold and eye catching which is
what you want in a magazine font cover.
The font used in this subheading suits the
image of Beyonce as it is very sophisticated and elegant and makes the
front cover look professional.
The barcode has been applicably placed. If it was in the middle then it
would distract you from the main focus of the magazine which is
Beyonce. It would look misplaced and not very professional, barcodes should
only be noticeable to an extent.
Layout: The layout is the same in every other issue
and is similar to the layout of Rolling Stones magazine. By having sub headings down the side doesn't, distract from the actual image of
Beyonce which will get sales. I think by having the
subheading positioned this way makes the front cover
look very organised and efficient.
Masthead: The contents masthead has been done in a different font to the
simplistic bold font usually used on “Billboards” front
pages which highlights the sense of ‘change’ this could link unto the charts continuous change every
week. However, “Contents” is still easy for the audience to read and
has written in a black colour which stands out
from the rest of the page.
Billboard Chart: They have smartly added this chart list to keep the interest of the readers. They have also placed it at the left hand
side as this is usually where looks first. Therefore the
magazine has a wider audience as it provides
multiple music interests. The specific artist and albums etc have also been given page numbers to make it easier for the reader to
locate their type of music they are in to. Each number
are also surrounded by a vibrant colour this makes
the number stand out more and directly relates to the vibrant colours used in the
Billboard masthead.
Colours: Certain headings have been
written in a blue colour in contrast to the white background as result
making them stand out more. This is so the
subject of the certain article is emphasised to
the reader.Photography: Four images have been used on the contents
page; three at the top and the fourth at the bottom in a bigger image. The audience are firstly drawn to the three images at
the top. The fourth image is the main image on the page as it is larger than the others, the people included in the facial
expressions which are in contrast to the more exciting images present.
Colours: The colours are quite different to
the cover i analysed. I think it is because the colours are chosen to represent the person the article or page is on so that the reader can understand what type of artist/person
they are. This appears to be a more
sophisticated way of picking colours as
younger readers may not notice this. Also
these colours represent the colours chosen for the cover
of Rita’s first CD which was of her in black
and white and the text “Ora” was in red. Rita
is in colour as this prevents the article looking too boring with it just being
black, white and red.
The heading of this article is “RITA ORA” in bold, red text. This suggest something about her that she is a go at it character and the reader can infer this from the text. Also it suggest
danger, love and passion. As the reader you could infer that she is not afraid to take risks and what she does she is
passionate about and she loves it. It is also a very to the point and simple article so you instantly know what they are talking
about. The splash image is the page, there is
barely any text and you would assume
that the main focus is on this image.
However most of the image is of a wall and
so is not too distracting, it just acts
as a background to the page more than a
picture. Rita is sat more in the light than in the dark suggesting a spotlight an that she is the main focus. The colour of her clothes
stops the page looking too boring, also a lot of leg flesh is shown to attract the male
attention (male gaze) as it could look like
she is not wearing any trousers unless you see the blue shorts.
The way that the article is written is in a question format where each question is a different subheading. The reader may find this
useful as they might only want to know one fact and so they would only have to read the questions and not the whole text.
The questions are written in red text to stand out against the rest of the grey text which is Rita’s answer to the question. This style
of writing can also make it feel as if the reader has asked the question and Rita is responding directly to the reader as it is all
quoted from what she has said previously in interviews. This makes it a lot more personal and connected.
Left Third: This is what will be seen on the shelves of shops which will sell the
magazine, Within it holds enough of the front cover to be easily
recognisable by things such as the logo, colour scheme and the
attractiveness of the cover lines which will draw the reader in.
Cover Lines: The cover lines highlights other
important articles which will provoke more interest aside from the lead article
Website & Barcode: The website is easy for the
reader to access information in a different
way to make it more appealing to a wider
audience. The barcode is conventional to all
magazines and also gives a professional
appearance.
Button: The button uses the same colour scheme to blend in seamlessly with the
rest of the front cover. Also presents
information in a different and more
interesting way than standard text.
Photography: The main image uses direct mode of address to draw the reader in and make it
more eye catching. It is a mid close up shot. The appearance of the Drake also reflects on the type
of magazine it is.
Masthead: In a large and easily recognisable font perhaps exclusive to this magazine. It is in keeping with the colour scheme
and will be used in every issue of this magazine.
Masthead: An alternative to other contents pages as
they usually copy a smaller version of the magazine masthead from the front
cover, however Vibe has an outlined and enlarged “V”
from the original masthead. With “Contents” written over in it bold characters the focus of the masthead
is taken away, however it is there of a large size
reminding readers it is Vibe they are reading.
Photography: This image shows the woman laying down in heels and a body
suit. Revealing her legs this continues the initial mood that this issue willl reveal information un told. The position of Clara has her main body against the
white/light grey section of the background this
highlights her and puts her at the attention of the
readers. Highlighting her shows the readers the
importance of her in the issue and so they are made attentive as she is clearly
the main selling point of this issue. It is often an image or large writing of the editor is
in place however Vibe doesn't enforce this typical feature and so we get the
feeling Vibe doesn't stick to all the conventions of a typical magazine that is truly all about the artist/ music and they speak for
themselves.
Layout: This is a very basic layout which uses the Rule of Third to keep text to the
right third and the main image uses both the left and
centre third. This layout allows all the contents
features to be clear and visible very much like the
front cover.
Colour Palette: The colours used are very simple and dark
to show a mysterious urban character and personality
which could be reflected by this model.
Masthead: The masthead of this page is “The Gospel According To Nicki Minaj”, it is a very large proportion of the stage. Similar
to the masthead from “Q” this has two contrasting fonts, in order to make it stand out to the reader. The artists name is in a simple, bold font, which is pink, whereas the lettering above it
has a script font which looks to be handwritten.
Colour Palette: The main colours used on this page are pink, black and white. The pink
gives the page an extremely girly and feminine look which would attract young
girls, who are interested in her
music and fits with the ‘pop’ genre of music. The black and pink contrast
work well with each other and allow the
text to stand out easily. However this type of double page spread is random in
a very urban hip hop magazine.
Design Balance: The design balance of this double page spread is informal, in order to give it an exciting, fun look. Even though the text is structured
effectively there is no balance in it and the image is positioned to the right hand
side.
Photography: Similar to the
‘Billboard’ double page spread only
one image is used. A bold, fun image has been included, which
clearly represents the ‘pop’ genre of
music being featured. The
artist is wearing vibrant pink
lipstick which compliments the pink background colour. The artist is wearing bold, unique costume jewellery which highlights the
exciting, fun tone of the page. The image also has direct mode of address which
would entice the reader and
creates a unique photo.
