QUEBEC…A PROVINCE TO CELEBRATE!
Maude Chartrand, Social Sciences
‘’Vive le Québec!!!’’. This is
what French Canadians are proud to say
on June 24th
and they say it loud. That
day is very special for the citizens of
Quebec because they celebrate their
national identity. This gigantic
celebration is called ‘’Saint Jean Baptiste
Day’’. At the beginning, it was more
concentrated on religion than now. So,
let’s see how Saint Jean Baptiste Day
was created and how we celebrate it
nowadays.
First of all, the name of ‘’Saint
Jean Baptiste Day’’ comes from, and
honours the preacher that announced the
coming of Jesus which is called St John
the Baptist. It is also the man who
baptized Jesus in the River Jordan
(Timeanddate, August 28, 2013). St John
was officially named the representative
of the French Canadians in 1908, but this
entire celebration has existed since many
centuries before. Around 1646, when
christianity took over France, colonists
brought elements of the celebration days
for Christian saints in Canada,
particularly in Quebec. Through the
years, it became ‘’Saint Jean Baptiste
Day’’ and it is because of the journalist
Ludger Duvernay. In 1834, he decided to
create an event to promote French
Canadian’s patriotism. He was inspired
by the St Patrick’s Day celebrations in
Montreal which is also a celebration of a
community’s identity. This is where the
origins of Saint Jean Baptiste Day come
from. In the past, this celebration was
based on patriotic foundations, which is
very different from the impressive events
organized nowadays. These events are
used as entertainment for the whole
Quebec.
Nowadays, in the 21st century,
Saint Jean Baptiste Day has lost its
religious side. Since the sixties, the
population of Quebec has become more
and more secular. For this reason, on
June 24th
, they are celebrating more
Quebec’s identity than religion.
However, is doesn’t modify how
important this day is for the citizens of
the province of Quebec. During that day,
each city celebrates it in its own way.
Concerts, sports tournaments, parades,
fireworks and activities for children are
often organized. It is also a great
opportunity to organize barbecues with
family and friends. On the day, everyone
enjoys the beginning of the summer and
they are proud to live in Quebec. On
Saint Jean Baptiste Day, post offices and
many stores are closed, and salaries of
people that are working on that day are
raised. During that special day, a lot of
people wear blue or white clothes which
are the colours of the flag of Quebec.
People also buy objects or
accessories with the Quebec flag on
them such as hats, t-shirts, etc. The fleur-
de-lys that appears on the flag of Quebec
represents the flower of an iris and it is
associated to the Virgin Mary and to her
purity (timeanddate, August 28, 2013).
This flower is the most important
symbol of Saint Jean Baptiste Day in
combination with the flag of Quebec.
To conclude, Saint Jean Baptiste
Day is called like this because of the
prophet St John that baptized Jesus. Its
origins are from the French colonists that
came in North America and it was
officially the national celebration of

Quebec in 1834 because of Ludger
Duvernay. Nowadays, Saint Jean
Baptiste Day is celebrated with
fireworks, parades, concerts, etc. Also,
the religious notions have disappeared
through the years. In other words, this
day is a celebration of Francophone
identity, culture, history and
achievements (Government of Canada,
August 28). So, next June 24th
, wherever
you are, have a thought for French
Canadians and don’t hesitate to celebrate
on your own as well!

Quebec, the black sheep Charles Perreault,
social sciences
In 1995, Jacques Pariseau was at
the head of the Parti Québécois when a
referendum was called upon the nation.
49% of Quebec’s population wanted to
separate from the rest of the country.
Since that defeat, the separatist
movement now represent 42% of the
Quebecers. Even if a minority is for
Quebec’s independence, it’s still a hot
topic today.
There are many good reasons
why Quebec should separate from
Canada. Quebec is using the Canadian
laws. These laws are not adapted to the
Quebecers and their reality according to
the Parti Québécois. Also, Quebec is
sending half of its tax income to Ottawa.
If Quebec was independent, it could
manage its own income and spend it
here. Independence would also be a
good way to protect the identity of
Quebecers. The culture difference
between Canada and Quebec is huge;
Canada is slowly fading Quebec’s
culture away. Separating from Canada
will help to protect the Quebecer’s
culture. Canada represents Quebec at the
international affairs. Being a country
would allow Quebec to represent itself in
front of the world.
On another point of view, there
are also some reasons why Quebec
should stick with Canada. At first,
Quebec doesn’t have an army strong
enough to protect the population from a
hypothetical attack. It would cost
billions of dollars to the new formed
country to build a capable army. Canada
could also impose shipping fees across
Canada and even border fees. Quebec
would also need to build a reputation
around the world since it was Canada
who represented it. Also, Quebec’s
economy would depend on Quebec’s
resources. It could not get financial
support from Canada for new projects or
infrastructures.
Vice, an information and news
site, asked some sovereignists what was
separation like today. Catherine Dorrion,
co-founder of Option Nationale tells that
separatism is becoming much more
popular because the most influential
people like the journalists talk about
separatism more often. Leo Bureau-
Blouin, elected member of the Parti
Québécois, was asked what was the
difference between today and in 1960,
he responded: “I think the main
difference between now and let’s say
thirty years ago is that people in Quebec
are more proud of who they are, they
have conviction that we can do our
things and be a powerful nation” (Joel
Balsan, September 12 2013). They also
asked Sylvain Guay, elected member of
the PQ, the same question. He said that
the main difference between today and
40 years ago is that in the 60, the
movement was more a strike, an
aggressive movement. Today it’s an
ideological and nature movement.

Pauline Marois.

With an opposite belief, Brian
Lee Crawley, lead manager of the
Macdonald-Laurier Institute, thinks that
separatism is dead. He thinks Ottawa
would never let Quebec have its
independence if there is not a strong
majority of the population who wants to
separate. Since 1998, Ottawa has the
right to decide to open or not the
negotiations on Quebec secession.
To conclude, Quebec’s
independence is still an eventuality in
the future. It’s your choice to decide if
you are for independence or not, but it’s
a certain thing that you will still hear of
separatism for many years.

The Dry Decade Christopher Brown
Social sciences administration
Every alcoholic beverage is not
allowed to be sold or acquired. That
includes beer, wine and spirits trade.
That’s how it was when Saskatchewan
went dry in July 1915. Imagine some
people nowadays revolting to get their
alcoholic beverage back. Unfortunately,
in Quebec, people voted no in the 1919
plebiscite to not impose total prohibition.
That led to major consequences in
Quebec in that time and the following
years.
The 1919 plebiscite led to
another solution. Instead of the
abstinence practice like the rest of North
America, the Quebec government
adopted an original solution to create the
“Commission des liqueurs de Québec”.
The Commission took charge of the
wine and spirits trade. Though the
Quebec government didn’t have
prohibition, Andrew Lefebvre wrote
from a story in the Toronto Daily Star
that claimed “that the average woman
instinctively recognized the whiskey
bottle and open bar to be the enemy of
her sex, as well as of the home and the
community” (Lefebvre, 2001). This
argument struck lightning because
women in Quebec couldn’t vote for the
prohibition referendum. Nevertheless,
the Commission made in the first year
$15 million dollars in sales with a net
income of $4 million. Creating jobs and
their own brands, the Commission
reached $27,539,966 annual gross sales
by 1930 but fell to $11,370,603 in 1934
because Franklin D. Roosevelt in
December 5th
1933 ended the dry decade
of the United States by signing the
Twenty-First Amendment repealing the
Eighteenth. After that, the Commission
change to the “Régie des alcohols du
Québec” removing spirit purchase limits
in 1941. In 1971, it changed to the
“Société des alcohols du Québec”. With
that came a new objective. “Its objective
is to offer consumers a range of sought-
after products of the highest possible
quality and at the lowest possible price”,
(SAQ).

appeared for smugglers and bootleggers.
A storm was coming with every criminal
in it. C.W. Hunt’s Booze, Boats, and
Billions: Smuggling Liquid Gold wrote:
“The rum-running was most profitable
on Lake Ontario” (Lefebvre, 2001). It
said that their where thousands of cases
of illegal alcohol being transported from
Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to places in
Michigan. The alcohol came from places
like Quebec, Vancouver and even
Scotland. People from Quebec would
transport large shipments of whiskey and
try to smuggle some in little quantities in
a different boat into Michigan. That said,
the opportunities were triumphant for
those who would successfully carry out
an order in the United States. The risk
was high, but that meant that the money
made was high too. But you had to
watch out for Coast Guard and even
more, the bandits. This was the case in
July and August 1926, when a large
shipment of 3500 cases of various
alcoholic beverages from Vancouver
never came to their destination. It was
supposed that the shipment was stolen.
In conclusion, the 1920
prohibition gave an opportunity to the
Quebec government to create a great
revenue and helped people who had a
boat a chance to make easy money
which led to smuggling careers. Today,
in Quebec, liquor is a bit cheaper than in
Ontario, which is still a consequence of
history.

An Accommodation For? Sarah- aude énard Humanities
Charles Taylor and Gerard Bouchard, the co-
presidents of the Bouchard-Taylor Commission
during the process in 2007.
Since the September 11 attacks,
exactly 12 years ago, the world was
divided on a religious basis. This reality,
added to global economic uncertainty,
often causes anxiety. This feeling often
leads to rejection of the other immigrants
especially those of Arab-Muslim origin
and all those who practice other
religions. Nowadays, in the entire world,
we reject too frequently diversity and
difference at the expense of the pride
that we have for our nation. In Quebec,
according to the forthcoming Charter of
Quebec Values, the province wants to
impose religious neutrality.
Religious accommodations in
Quebec have begun in 2008 when
orthodox Jews in Montreal requested
frosted glass in a downtown YMCA to
protect their children of the carnal outfits
of exercisers. This demand has created
an existential crisis about our values and
our tolerance. Today, a Charter of
Quebec Values is set up to follow the
Bouchard-Taylor Commission created
on February 8, 2007 by Jean Charest to
examine the questions about reasonable
accommodations. This new charter is
one of the most extreme fixes ever
envisaged. This one prohibits public
employees from wearing religious item
in hospitals, public schools and
daycares. But, private schools will not be
affected as well as non-subsidized child
care and those in home. Also, state
employees like police officers, prison
officers and the president of the National
Assembly will be involved. The
Quebec's Council for the Status of
Women has argued that ''ostentatious
displays of religious symbols could lead
people to believe that a person's faith
influences their work'' (Woods, 2013).
As the ruling party, they think that
religious symbols influence their work.
So, with this new charter, the Parti
Quebecois promises an ultimatum for
people who receive a salary from the
government and have another religion:
''choose your job or your faith, because
you can't have both'' (Woods, 2013).
This is what they wanted to insinuate
when they said it was the most extreme
fix.
The opinions are varied in this
decision. Well, this is what emerges
from a survey conducted by Leger
Marketing. This survey highlights the
opinion of Quebecers about religious
accommodations. For example, ''74% of
Quebecers, whose first language is
French, believe that religious
accommodations affect the functioning
of public institutions'' (Gagné, 2013).
But, this same survey indicates that
''57% of French-speaking Quebecers are
consistent with the idea that we should
prohibit all religious symbols in the
public square'' (Gagné, 2013). This
results of this opinion poll show that the
half of the population is uncomfortable
with religious symbols in public spaces.
It was really divided. For half of the
population, this new Charter of Quebec
Novembre 2013 [HERE AND NOW]

Values is not a good thing. Charles
Taylor, a philosopher who was co-
president the 2007 Bouchard-Taylor
Commission, said that the new plan is
monstrous: ''It just is a terrible move, a
gratuitous move of exclusion''
(Desjardins, 2013). In addition, the
Human rights lawyer Julius Grey said:
''It’s not just freedom of religion that we
have in our charter. It’s also freedom of
religion and conscience […] we should
not put people is a situation where they
have to choose between jobs and their
conscience'' (Lynn Desjardins, 2013).
These arguments show the opinion of
people against the new charter. For
them, this charter deprives citizens of
their right of freedom. In opposition,
others think this charter is the best thing.
One of these is Daniel Baril, a head of
the Quebec Secular Movement. M. Baril
thinks that society should have the
appearance of neutrality. He wrote in
ontreal’s Le Devoir: ''A state that
declares itself secular and then leaves it
employees free to promote their
religious belief, it’s like a restaurant that
declares itself non-smoking but leaves
those who work there free to smoke''
(Woods, 2013). This quote explains that
each person must hide their religious
identity to create the secular society that
the Parti Quebecois wants. This is
another point of view.
In conclusion, approximately
only one in two people really agree with
the ideas of the Charter of Quebec
Values. This sensitive topic of this new
charter affects the majority of Quebecers
and the adoption of this one could be
very difficult. Thus, it's certain that this
will create a lot of debates in the future.
This is a topic to follow in the coming
weeks.

Our beliefs, our choices Stéphanie Jean Racine. Tremplin DEC
Religion has always been a part
of our community. Many years ago, we
used to have crucifixes hanging up the
wall in schools, in law courts and in our
house. In schools, religion classes were
taught. However it has changes since
2004.
What define us from other people
is our beliefs in life, in God, in whatever
we believe and our culture. Lately, The
Charter of Quebec has revealed a new
legislation that would ban religious
symbols from public places. They want
to prohibit people that work in public
places and people in general to wear
turbans, niqabs, kippas and visible
crucifixes. The way people dress has
nothing to do with how they are going to
perform at work. A doctor is not less
competent because he wears a turban.
The same goes for a teacher, a nurse or a
Novembre 2013 [HERE AND NOW]
13
lawyer. No one has the right to change
their beliefs. By prohibiting people from
wearing religious symbols, we forget
about human rights. We should accept
people the way they are. At Salut
Bonjour, a reporter asked many
Quebecers how they were feeling about
taking off the crucifix symbol in our
community. 70% of people said that it
was a bad idea because that symbol
defines us, the crucifix is a part of who
we are. You can’t ask someone not to
work in public places or not to go out
because that person only has one leg or
one arm. You can’t tell that person ‘’oh
grow you a leg so you can be equal to
everyone else’’ just as you can’t ask
someone to take off their turbans
because it is part of who they are.
The government should pay more
attention to the economy, education,
taxes, health care and construction.
These are real problems. The
government should build more
organisations for homeless people and
drug addicts. Should we ban the
Christmas tree? Since Christmas is a
way to celebrate Jesus. If Pauline Marois
wants everyone to be equal, then
Christmas tree should not be seen in
public places as malls, banks,
restaurants, etc. People will want to
leave. Immigrants won’t feel like they
have a place in Quebec. It is
unbelievable to ask someone to give up
on who they are just so they could feel
accepted in the community. Pauline
Marois is forcing people to give up on
their rights if they want to work in public
places.
Everyone is equal in their own
way. The way you dress, the way you
talk, the way you look, the way you are
has nothing to do with your job. Your
beliefs belong to you and no one should
be able to change that. We have so many
other problems going on, this should be
the less of our concern. We should fight
for who we are, for what we believe.
What truly matters is how people act.
What matters is the change someone
wants to bring in our society, not their
beliefs!

The right to send your child to an English school
Alexis Stoddard, Early childhood
education
Quebec’s population is divided
when it comes to different school
systems would the children be better in
French or English school? Quebec put
in a new law to increase the French
speaking language; one of their new
rules is “a child whose parents are
Canadian citizens and received
elementary school in English in Canada”
(Charte de la langue Française au
Quebec, article 73). The child is eligible
to get schooled in English if the parents
have the norms.
The French opinion
After asking questions to 1001
people in Quebec, 39% of them agreed
to say they would send their children to
French school because they would be
better off, for example “ Christina
Friedrich said she believes the French
system will give her son the tools he
needs to be successful in Quebec” (
Quebec Anglo parents divides on French
VS English schools). Although, to get a
job in Quebec, the employers ask for
both languages to be successful at work.
However, there are thousands of students
who choose the French system when
they are eligible to attend the English
system, because they don’t want to
live without a job or they don’t
know how good the French has
become in the English schools.
The English opinion
After the survey that was done
between January 15th
and January 23rd
,
45% of the people surveyed don’t agree
with the French system being the best
choice for them. They prefer the English
schools, because it doesn’t only prepare
them for life in Quebec, but life in
general where ever they go next. Some
of the English-speaking parents decided
to send their children to French school,
but will teach them English at home
themselves, “the main reason is they
want them to have better work
opportunities” (French VS English). My
parents sent me to French school in
grade three and continued to teach me
English at home. However, most parents
don’t know the level of French being
taught in English schools. Usually, it
has improved a lot since the parents
were in school. English schools are bi-
cultural and bilingual when French is
their second
language;

children to connect with the real world
in Quebec. Also, the French and English
school boards gave the same test in
French and the Anglophone students
scored the same or better in French than
the French kids attending French school,
according to David Birnbaum, executive
director of the school boards association.
My opinion
To conclude, the school board
association made a commitment to both
English and French schools. They built
a bilingual school in Pointe Claire; the
children spend one week in English and
the week after in French. It is very
interesting because the child will get as
much education in both languages, so
the child will be ready to work anywhere
doing anything because they will have
more to their advantage. Also, I find it
ridiculous, in order to send a child to
English school his or her parents have to
have gone to English school, but, yet
anybody can got to French school. In
Quebec, we should have the right to send
the children as much too English or
French school, which ever the parents
would like their child to be educated in.
Where would you send your child to
school?
In what languages?
And why?

Some people have the ability to feel
someone else’s reality and feelings from
different levels, we call this: empathy.
It’s fundamentally to be able to see the

right things. There are also a vast
number of other qualifications needed to
be a good professional in the industry of

changes with the type of clientele you

needed to become a special education
teacher. More precisely, a special

In general, special education

territory, or of a State. ’’ (Regulation
respecting teaching licenses, 2013)
However, special education teachers ‘’
[…] may also specialize in working with
students who have a particular type of
disability. ’’ (Special education teacher:
job info and qualifications needed to
become a special education teacher,
2013)
More specific ally, special
education teachers could work with
people that have the diagnosis of Autism
Spectrum Disorder. This diagnosis ‘’
[…] is distinguished by ‘’deficits in
social communication and social
interaction and… restricted repetitive
behaviors, interests, and activities.’’
Both characteristics must be
present in order for a diagnosis of
[Autism Spectrum Disorder] to be made
under the DSM-5. ‘’ (New diagnostic
and statistical manual revises autism
spectrum disorder diagnosis, 2013).
These characteristics may be caused by
‘’ […] genetics, prenatal and perinatal
factors, neuroanatomical abnormalities,
and environmental factors. ‘’ (Autism
spectrum disorder-causes, 2013) Right
now, four types of autism-related
disorders exists: autistic disorder,
Asperger’s disorder, pervasive
developmental disorder and childhood
disintegrative disorder (DSM source).
Unfortunately, ‘’ researchers found that
these separate diagnoses were not
consistently applied across different
clinics and treatment centers. ‘’ (New
diagnostic and statistical manual revises
autism spectrum disorder diagnosis,
2013). From 2008 to 2012, an increase
of 80% had been reported to the centers
for Disease Control and Prevention.
In conclusion, the main
qualifications needed to be a good
special education teacher is to have good
communication skills, to be able and
comfortable to work in one-on-one with
clients, to have a good self-confidence
and to possess a state licensure and a
bachelor’s degree recognized by the
competent authority of the Canadian
province or territory you live in. For the
Autism Spectrum Disorder, it’s
important to know that there are four
kinds of diagnoses: Asperger’s disorder,
autistic disorder, childhood
disintegrative disorder and pervasive
developmental disorder. Also, the main
definition of those diagnoses is that these
people have deficits in their social
sphere of life and they have particular
behaviors, interests and activities. We
can see it by the way they act, in general,
and when we see them.

Quebec has the highest drop-out rates in Canada
Kelly Kupin Fournier, humanities
“High school dropout rates in
Canada have plummeted” (Hammer,
2012) in the last 20 years, and it’s still a
bad problem in our society. We have
here the highest dropout rates in all
Canada. What must Quebec do to
change the situation? Can they learn
something from their western
neighbours?
In Quebec, for some reason,
teenagers continue to drop out of school
more than anywhere in Canada. “42% of
our school boards are still showing a
dropping rate of over 20%” (Le Devoir
2012), in general in the province of
Quebec, the dropout rate is 10.6 %.
(Human Resources and Skills
Development Canada) Even with all
they know about the bad consequences
of not finishing high school, teenagers
still choose to drop out. By finding out
what’s causing the problem maybe we
can find the solution to this bad issue.
They are more guys dropping out than
girls but for different reasons. The most
frequent reasons for girls are related to
family issues and for the guys it’s more
because of attitude problems or the
attraction of the workplace. (La Tribune,
2009) For instance, there are more
students leaving school before getting
their diploma when they are from a
divorced family. With the one parent
having sometimes to work more to make
some money, it creates a lack of
attention and they have less time to help
the children with their school work. The
depression of a parent can sometimes
create an “instability in the family that
can affect the attention span and
concentration of the children that can
follow them throughout their school
years”. (La Tribune, 2009) This type of
mental disease can be very annoying for
a child and it can affect his or her school
grades. They are other reasons causing
this problem, like the fact that the
students don’t really know why they
have to go to school. They don’t see the
link between school and real life.
Another factor is the work place because
sometimes it seems more attractive than
sitting in a classroom and when they get
an offer for a full time job, teenagers
jump at it without considering the long-
time effect. We have to learn from these
bad factors in order to find ways to
reduce the dropout rates. We can maybe
learn from some of the western
Novembre 2013 [HERE AND NOW]
19
provinces that show lower numbers of
dropouts.
Statistics show that in Canada the
dropout rate has declined. In British
Colombia they have the lowest rate with
5.9%. (Statistic Canada)
© Human Resources and Skills Canada
The students over there must be
“reacting to the changing realities
around them”. (Hammer, 2012) The
government must find a way to convince
teenagers that with a High school
diploma they can find a better job with a
more interesting salary so they can get a
better life quality. Alberta is a good
example of improvement in the dropout
rate because it has found a good
approach to help the students. This
province gives to the students an
opportunity to work in the co-op and
learn at the same time. (Hammer, 2012)
They also accommodate the teenagers
that are pregnant or with children by
adding daycare centers to their facilities.
(Hammer, 2012)
In conclusion, the government
must keep trying to find solutions to
keep our teenagers in school. It’s
important for them and for our society.
Quebec must find ways to convince the
student that a high school diploma is
very important, even necessary to get a
good job and to increase their quality of
life.

Underground collaboration
Does the governmenttold

Novembre 2013 [HERE AND NOW]

Underground Collaboration Frederic Fournier
A huge discovery will change the
way Québec’s forest industry cuts trees.
It will also improve the economy. This
discovery “has changed completely the
perception of forest ecology.” (Emilie
Tarroux, 2012) Before that finding,
scientists (and people in general) thought
that trees were fighting each other for
limited resources coming from soil or to
have a better access to sunshine as
animals do to find food and adapt
themselves to survive. Now, this
conception of competition between trees
of same species falls. In fact, they work
together with a common root system
instead of operating alone.
This is what Emilie Tarroux and
Annie DesRochers, from the Université
du Québec in Abitibi Témiscamingue,
discovered while studying the effects of
root grafting on trees growth. They used
a high-pressure water spray to show the
underground root system.
Root system after using of high-pressure water spray. Photo from: Québec Science’s magazine, Feb. 2012, p.35-36.
For example, one of the
consequences of this discovery is that “it
could allow well-located trees to support
trees that grow in drier or poorer
environments.” (Annie DesRochers,
2011) Concretely, it means that it would
be possible for a tree far from water
sources to get access to it if there are
trees of the same species (and old
enough) between this tree and the water.
In adding to the share of common
resources with their roots, “joined root
systems can give trees better wind
stability, preventing weaker trees from
blowing down and opening up stands,
which could then make stands more
susceptible to wind-throw.” (Emilie
Tarroux and Annie DesRochers, 2011)
So, belonging to a large root system
allows their members to get the
maximum grounding stability, but it’s
not always profitable. In the case that
one or more trees die, it would mean that
the rest of the trees continue to transmit
water and nutrients in the roots of those
dead trees, “in certain cases during more
than nine years” (Emilie Tarroux, 2012),
reducing the growth of trees remaining.
Also, according to this principle,
underground collaboration could change
the way that the forest industry will
proceeds when they cut trees. For
example, forestry companies often cut a
part (for example, 10%) of a forest and
let the rest (90%) there to grow until
they come back: but it is worthless. In
fact, the 90% of trees remaining will
grow slower than if 100% of trees were
still there. Now, imagine that 50% or
70% of trees are cut, the growth loss
becomes significant and, at the same
time, the company that works this way is
making less money and pay less income
tax to government. However, the two
researchers hadn’t quantified the loss
resulting from that old producing
technique. One thing is sure, a lot of
forest companies all over the world
watch for results of this important
discovery to improve their income.
In conclusion, contrary to the
mentality that claimed that trees are
competing each other’s for nature’s
resources, Emilie Tarroux and Annie
DesRochers’s discovery shows that trees

of same species work together with their
roots.

Does the government have told us everything?
JulienCadieux-Soufflet, natural

There are not a lot of big
tragedies that have happened to Quebec.
We can’t compare our situation to the
U.S.A even if we take a look at the
tragedy of September 11th
. This summer
a big tragedy happened in Quebec. We
all heard about the train derailment and
the big explosion at Lac-Mégantic. A lot
of bad consequences have been
recorded.
First of all, one thing is sure, this
tragedy brought a lot of negative
environmental impacts. About 100 000
and 120 000 liters of oil were dumped
into the Chaudière River and the
Megantic Lake. That’s a lot! The oil
present in the train was light-crude oil.
There are positives and negatives on
that. The positive thing is that light-
crude oil flows on the surface; it floats.
It’s easier to remove than heavy crude
that goes down to the riverbed. The
negative thing about this is light oil can
explode because the molecular structure
is more unstable than heavy oil that
burns. That’s why a big explosion
happened, last summer. The MDDEFP
has confirmed that 5,7milion liters of oil
have been dumped in the environment.
The first action to do was to clear the
water because oil circulates faster in the
water than on the land. Statistics, that
come from an analysis obtained by The
Canadian Press, told us “the rate of
carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons is 394 444 times the
standard acceptable for surface waters
mandated by the provincial government.
(Marquis, august 13) This high pollution
will have a lot of negative impacts on the
water ecosystem. A lot of dead fish have
been found. The cleanup isn’t done and
it will take a lot of years before
everything becomes normal
Secondly, it’s always difficult for
citizens to know the truth. Most of the
facts and statistics come from the
government. How can we know if the
government doesn’t hide little details?
At least, there is environmental groups,
like Greenpeace and the SVP, who do
research. For example, the government
said that light oil was present in the
wagons. The SVP have concluded that
schist oil was also present in the
wagons. This oil can contain different
toxic substances that are not present in
Novembre 2013 [HERE AND NOW]
23
light oil. This has also noticed some
arsenic in the water. It’s about 28 times
above the limit. This is something that
the government didn’t tell us. Émilien
Pelletier, researcher in sea
ecotoxicology, said that the SVP results
are sketchy because there is not a lot of
samples that show the fact. The
conclusion of the SVP brought new
news. The government should have
taken attention to that and do another
analysis to be sure that the arsenic
present in the water isn’t dangerous for
human.
In conclusion, the environmental
impacts of the tragedy of Lac-Mégantic
are really big but we had luck in our bad
luck. The environmental impacts could
be worse. One thing is sure the negative
impacts are real and the government
needed to analyze every little detail.

Molson Brothers, Proud Sponsor of Quebec
Guillaume Barabé – Administration
Beer, hockey and women; three
things Quebec must be proud of. So how
can we think about Quebec without
talking about the owner of two of them?
The Molson brothers; they own the
prestigious hockey team: the Montreal
Canadian, and a two century old
beverage company: Molson Canada.
Molson Canada was
established in 1786 by
John Molson. Its
headquarters originated
in Montreal, but later on
it moved to Denver.
Molson Canada which is
now called Molson
Coors Brewing Company is
the second oldest company in North-
America and the oldest one with its
foundation still running. Molson is big
and rich as we know it today because of
the Molson Export beer. After the launch
of this beer, Molson never looked back
again. At this point in time Molson is in
the top five of the biggest brewers in the
world, this is what we can call a
successful company from Quebec. Last
year, the total revenues almost hit $4
million, $ 3916.5 million to be exact.
Even if it’s a Quebec company, only
3000 workers out of almost 19 000 work
in Canada, and most of them, as you
probably concluded, are situated in the
USA. But still, Quebec should be proud
of the excellent beer created here.
If you think that Molson only
made beer, you are mistaken. The
Molson family was the first to own
steamships. They used it for the
transport of merchandise as well as for
passengers between Quebec and Ontario.
Molson Canada created the first railway
for the same reasons. The Molson family
also created the olson’s Bank which is
now fusion with the bank of Montreal.
They also opened sugar industry as well
as built some mansion. None of these
side companies really worked, but when
you have as much money as the
olson’s, it’s not a big deal to try
different ventures.
Finally, in 1957, the brothers,
Tom and Hartland Molson bough the
NHL hockey team, the Montreal
Canadian. It was an excellent acquisition
for the Molson family because this team
is the pride of a whole nation. The Habs
are from the big 6 (the first 6 teams who
started the NHL over 100 years ago).
This team represented Quebec. The
Molson sold the team few years later to
Mr. Gillette but they bought it back last
year, for good it seems. The fact that
they own such team proves that they still
care about their origins.
As one of the biggest company
still in activity, Molson Coors Brewing
Company deserve to be seen as a part of
Quebec. Quebecois should really be
proud of the Molson, they own our
favorite team; they make great beer and
represent us really well on the World-
wide market. Sadly, they are in a small
group of world-wide
companies made in
Quebec.

Xavier Martin- Human Sciences
Every single Quebecois knows
about popular beer like Budweiser,
Coors Light and Molson Export. In
general, most of them are the first beer
drunk by people. But what about our
local beer production? It is important to
know what is producing in our own
country before purchasing in other
country. This is why the following
article will explain more on one of
Quebec pride: Unibroue beer. The first
part of this text will give a lot of
information on the history of that
brewing industry. After, different
Unibroue beers will be explained with
more details, to make you realize the
differences between each of them.
First of all, the Unibroue industry
began in 1992 when André Dion and
Serge Racine founded it. The adventure
into the world of beer of these two
gentlemen began before that: "The
Unibroue adventure began in 1990,
when André Dion and Serge Racine
decided to vie for a share of the fast-
growing craft beer market" (Unibroue,
2013). The principal goal of those two
guys was to create a good beer that a lot
of people would consume. To make sure
the population would appreciate those
products, Unibroue used a particular
method created by the Trappist
monksfrom Belgium during the 200S
years. As soon as Unibroue’s story
began, those beers established them as
good brewers. The popular singer Robert
Charlebois began a major investor of
Unibroue this year, 1992. After that,
Unibroue delocalized themselves to
Chambly, to help them to increase their
exportation capacity all around Quebec
and Canade. In 1995 and 1996, Unibroue
began to export in Europe, especially in
France, Switzerland and Belgium. This
same year, they opened "Le Fourquet-
Fourchette", the first restaurant-museum
in Quebec situated near the Richelieu
River. At this point, this brewery became
a public corporation on the Toronto
Stock Exchange. A couple of years later,
in 2004, Sleeman Brewery became
interested by Unibroue and finally
bought it. By now, Sleeman changed his
name to SleemanUnibroue Inc. Unibroue
story has not finished, in October 2006,
a brewer from Japan named Sapporo
International, ought SleemanUnibroue.
Like Japanese said:"Unibroue is a
Canadian treasure to be cherished and
share with the entire world"(Unibroue,
2013)
Novembre 2013 [HERE AND NOW]
27
Second, Unibroue’s products
have a lot of differences. The first beer
created by Unibroue is the Blanche of
Chambly. This beer, with a light ale
color, contains 5% of alcohol. In the
same category of light beers, we have
the Raftman (5.5%), a whiskey malt
beverage that Ontario sold as the fourth
beer. This beer was created "in honor of
the masters of the forest who were
lumberjacks, log drivers and rafts men of
the Canadian woods". La Fin du Monde,
The third one to be released in Ontario is
a strong beer that contains between 7 to
10% of alcohol, depending on the beer
size. This pale beer is fermented 3 times
to be sure that is is very good as a strong
beer should. The Trois Pistoles, who can
be distinguished by his dark caramel-red
color, is a beer that reminds us the
Quebecoise legend with the black horse
printed on the front of the bottle. This
beer contains 7% of alcohol.
To conclude, all beers that are
made by Unibroue are related to Quebec
stories. This principle is working for
every single beer. That is how Unibroue
made a difference between themselves
and the international beer market. It
could be interesting to learn more about
the Quebec legends related to beers. That
way, we could really feel the emotions.

Breakfast is for conquerors Julie Boisvert, business
Getting up and eating well is the
first thing we should do to have a good
day and breakfast is the best important
meal for eating fruit and fibre. Because
of that, breakfast is the most meal of the
day. Cora Mussely Tsouflidou, the
woman behind over 130 franchised
restaurants understood it and now she is
committed to promote the importance of
eating breakfast.
In May 1987, Cora bought a
small diner in ontreal’s Saint-Laurent
area. Soon, she realized that breakfast is
the busiest part of the day and the snack-
bar wasn’t big enough. She needed to
grow and started a whole new breakfast
concept in Quebec. In a few years, the
success and Cora’s reputation for
excellent breakfasts lead to the opening
of six more Chez Cora Déjeuners.
Several new partners were introduced to
this winning formula. In fact, in 1992
she was approached by a woman who
wanted to use the concept. As Cora
started to learn more about it, she
Novembre 2013 [HERE AND NOW]

discovered that her restaurant had “all
the conditions to be a successful
franchise: a new product in [her]
˝recreated˝ breakfast, a teachable
formula, and a proven track record of
probability."( Elgie, Mar/Apr. 2009)
The first franchise opened in
1993 and her dream was to have 200
franchises across Canada. She wanted to
bring her great breakfasts to all
Canadians, one store at a time. The
primary objective of the company is to
serve breakfasts in as many places, as
often and to as many customers as
possible. The core values of the
enterprise are integrity, enthusiasm and
professionalism (www.chezcora.com).
For the founder, initiative, perseverance,
self-confidence, hard work and limitless
energy are the main ingredients in her
recipe for success.
In the business world, Cora
Tsouflidou is the best example of a self-
made business woman. The Chez Cora
banner is recognized as the leader in the
breakfast industry in Quebec and is on
its way to become a foremost leader
across Canada. In 2003, she won the
Governor General's award. She also won
several awards including The Ernst &
Young Entrepreneur of the Year award
in the Manufacturing/Consumer
Products Category, the Pinnacle Award
and the Tops in Hospital Award from
Food Service and Hospitability
magazine. (Ryan, August 8, 2008)
Recently, she received the CFA Lifetime
Achievement Award, for her outstanding
success and contribution to the
franchising world. No candidacy was
required for this award which makes it
an even more prestigious prize!
(www.chezcora.com August 29, 20130
Of course, this prize will not
make Cora rest on her laurels.
Groundwork has been established and
they expect development in the Boston
market in 2013. However, it's important
to be in the present moment. Wanting a
business and being committed to it are
two different things. You have to stay
focused for a miracle to happen; always
keep in mind what could you do to
improve your products and continually
want to learn, you have to think about
your happiness first and not any
economic reasons. Like Cora
says:"You've got tom lay your egg every
morning. This means that when you
wake up, you've got to recreate
yourself."
Whatever you age, eating
breakfast has a beneficial effect on your
ability to concentrate and your
performance; Cora understood it and
now she is making her dream come true:
bringing food to as much person as
possible. Let's bet that she eats her
breakfast every morning to be such a
conqueror.

The Real Beauty
Marie-Philippe Poulin-Samson
Worldwide, a lot of cosmetic
companies are trying to sell their beauty
products to women who want a clarified
skin, beautiful eyelashes or even some
dazzling red cheeks. But are the women
using makeup for good reason? A lot of
women, all around the world, use
cosmetics to be loved by the others
around them and not for themselves.
Fortunately, one of the many companies
that have been helping women to make
them understand that makeup does not
serve to gratify others, but to gratify
them. This company is Lise Watier
Cosmetics.
The entrepreneur, Lise Watier,
founded her company in 1968 in
Montreal. Her mission was to
communicate to women that makeup
should be fun, not an obligation or a
routine (LiseWatier Cosmetics). She
taught a lot of persons to help them to
get confidence in their personality. She
did amazing psychological work for
women who live in Quebec. She opened
the Lise Watier Institute, a beauty and
charm school that taught personal
growth, grooming, etiquette and
makeup, she created a cosmetics
company to help women to be proud of
them and she used natural products in
her cosmetics, that help women to take
advantage, at the same time, of their
natural beauty combined with makeup to
develop a good esteem.
Lise Watier opened the Lise
Watier Institute with a one and only
goal: women must have more confidence
in themselves. A psychology project
discovered that women have many
contrarieties related to personal concerns
like their appearance (Introduction à la
psycologie). Lise Watier wanted to
eliminate this feeling that a lot of women
in Quebec are having. She helped
women to increase their self-esteem and
disregard all the negative comments that
others can say about their look.
Everyone has their own perception of
what the appearance should be. The
concept was a hit and helped a lot of
women to look good, to assert
themselves and to have confidence.

A few months after the opening
of the school, LiseWatier decided to
create her own cosmetics company. Her
goal wasn't to hide the natural beauty of
women but to provide them with a good
self-image. With s little bit of mascara
and lipstick, their self-image can change
because those products are somehow
stimulators. Stimulators are something
that makes your self-image looking
good. Feeling good looking provide to
women a good feeling and contributes
positively on their self-esteem, day to
day, she'll feel more valued.
To convince women that makeup
does not remove any natural aspects in
their beauty, Lise Watier worked with a
chemist, Cyrille Corbeil, to extract the
gel from several plants. Having found
the method to extract the gel from plants,
she conceived cosmetics that are purely
naturals (Lise Watier: Le monde entier
en beauté. Caroline Montpetit). Women
who have been buying the LiseWatier
products could put makeups and stay
natural. Psychologically, women could
truly appreciate themselves. The “soi
réel”, the idea that a person makes of
what she really is, will be developing,
leaving aside the “soi ideal”, the idea
that a person makes of what she could be
(Psychologie du développement
humain).
In conclusion, during her life,
LiseWatier always advocated physically
and psychologically the well-being of
women. She completed her work in
Quebec. Now, her cosmetics are
available in Saudi Arabia, Spain, Japan,
USA, Philippines, Russia and France
with the same goal: work hard to help
women to feel good inside and outside
of their body. LiseWatier is an example
for all the ladies in the world
(LiseWatier: Le monde entier en beauté.

Xavier Dolan or a new talented filmmakerO
Michelle McKelvey-Faucher (Arts and

Denys Arcand (known for The
Barbarian Invasion), Philippe Falardeau
(known mainly because of his 2011 film
Monsieur Lazhar), or even Ken Scott
(his last film, Starbuck, is going to have
an American remake) are all great
Quebec director, but currently, the name
that is on everyone's lips is Xavier
Dolan, one of the most promising young
Quebec filmmakers.
For those who don’t know who he is or
what his work is, Xavier Dolan is an
actor and a director. He has also dubbed
a dozen of movies. J’aitué ma mère
(2008), his first film, was a revelation in
Cannes and won three different prizes.
The three panels underlined the unique
character of his direction, as well as the
poetry that emanates from his work. His
second movie, Les amours imaginaires
(2009), was also presented in Cannes
and it received a warm reception from
the public (an eight-minute standing
ovation). Since then, his work has been
critically acclaimed all around the world.
However, his latest film, Tom à la ferme
(2013), has not been presented in
Cannes, but at the Venice film festival
where, as always, he received many
good critics.
As you can see, Xavier Dolan is a
prolific director who has a great career in
front of him, but he has to face harsh
critics regularly. For example, this
young man has been accused many times
of loving his image when he plays the
main character in his films. To an
journalist of The Hollywood Reporter,
his latest answer to a personal
PHOTO ALESSANDRO BIANCHI, REUTERS
attack was: “You can kiss my
narcissistic ass”. ( axime Demers,
fr.canoe.ca, September 3, 2013) He also
has to defend College boy, a music video
he directed for French group Indochine.
The black-and-white video shows a teen
being bullied while the other students
stand by with blindfolds. It finishes with
a crucifixion scene. In France, the
Conseil Supérieur de l’audiovisuel found
the video too violent to show it to a
young public, which Dolan responded
to: “This is the age you need to be
educated on violence and the true
consequences. […] We live in a society
that allows this sort of extreme
violence.” (CBC.ca, ay 3, 2013)
Even if Xavier Dolan may be a
little bit pretentious sometimes (he
seems to like who he is and what he
looks like), he is mainly a great director
who will certainly have a grand future in
the film industry. Due to all his qualities,
his talent and what emanates from him,
Xavier Dolan absolutely gives a great
image of Quebec internationally. Yes, he
is presently in the centre of a
controversy, and yes, it's not the first
time, but he is not a shame for people
from Quebec. After all, he is a proud
member of a type of person you cannot
Novembre 2013 [HERE AND NOW]

be indifferent to. You can quote him,
glorify him, or in the contrary,
absolutely hate him. But one thing you
cannot do is ignore him. In ten years,
maybe he will be the best Quebec
director, who knows? Or on the other
hand, maybe he will sink into oblivion.
Only time will tell us.

OSHEAGA: A HIT TO STAY? VéroniqueLabrecque, Arts and Letters
How well does the Canadian
culture stand out against globalization?
As time goes by, many aspects of the
Canadian daily life is more and more
influenced by other countries such as the
United States. Wanting to expand the art
market at a worldwide level, Canada has
even copied the idea of California’s
Coachella Festival by creating its own;
Osheaga Music and Arts Festival.
However, is the energy spent in the
making of such an event really helpful in
the development of Canada?
A bit of history
The Osheaga Music and Arts
Festival was first founded by Nick
Farkas, working on the ‘’Groupe
Spectacle Gillett’’ at the time. Having its
first opening during the Labor Day
weekend of September 2th and 3rd
2006,
Osheaga was presented as a ‘’multigenre
indie festival’’, based on five steps of
music shows (Wikipedia, September
3rd
2013). The idea of presenting a bunch
of underground artists at Parc Jean-
Drapeau (Montreal) appeared to Farkas
as a way to improve the popularity of
Quebec, using the already known
credibility of Montreal in the land of
music. The key of the Festival’s success
is to be based on a mix of all kinds of
music genres. In fact, up-coming artists
play together during a period of thirty
minutes, followed by the headliner
groups closing the night with more than
Novembre 2013 [HERE AND NOW]
34
an hour and a half of music (Wikipedia,
2013). Often compared to Woodstock’s
legendary atmosphere, the Osheaga
Festival has been improved with time,
fitting out a lot of interactive booths,
stations and food trucks (Christina
Dun,2013).
Is Osheaga that popular?
In 2006, the first presentation of
Osheaga attracted about 25 000 people.
As the years flew by, the number of
tickets sold became higher and higher, as
well as the positive responses received
from artists who would play at the
festival. In 2012, Osheaga was so
popular that the organisation offered a
three day long event to its public of 18 to
35 years old, instead of only two days of
shows. The singer Eminem gave a huge
performance, which helped increase the
presence of the festival on the American
and European market, making Canada a
worldwide destination, at the same time.
This year’s festival hit a record of
135 000 people present at the meeting
(Wikipedia, 2013).
Contrary to what people may think of
such a huge event, where pop music is
on top of the list, even an acoustic
quartet such as ‘’ umford and Sons’’
can rise in popularity, which shows that
the mix of genres isn’t bad after all, and
brings other provinces to discover
Quebec. In fact, in 2013, 70% of the
tickets were sold outside our province.
In total, since its creation in 2006,
Osheaga has presented over 600 shows
to more than 400 000 music lovers
(Wikipedia, 2013).
How much?
To be considerate helpful and
rewarding to the country’s tourist
market, such an important project as the
Osheaga Festival needs to remain
profitable. At its beginning, the festival
wasn’t a big financial success for the
province, even though it was quite
popular at this time. However, in 2011,
about 30% of the tickets were sold in
Montreal, 20% in Ontario and 12% in
the United States, which was a good start
for the worldwide access of the young
festival (Bryen Dunn, August 8 2013).
Nowadays, the profits of Osheaga are
estimated up to 50 million dollars, which
helped put the festival at the 11th
stage of
the most popular festivals in the world
(Huffington Post Quebec, 2013).
In conclusion, the Osheaga
Festival, taking place each year, receives
a growing number of participants and
stands out on the Canadian tourist
advantages so it shouldn’t be too much
for our country to handle, as it helps
Canada to develop its possibilities.
However, it is known that public events
of big scope such as Osheaga can
sometimes lead to massive groups and to
disturbances: will there be a limit of
what our country is ready to accept to
satisfy the highest number of tourists?

When creativity becomes a business solution
Francis Mantha
Arts & Letters
Once a year, prolific
entrepreneurs and creative people get
together in Montreal at a global
conference called C-2 MTL. Held in a
redesigned hangar in Griffintown,
speeches, workshops and exhibitions
take place in the goal of finding creative
answers to commercial questions.
Speakers like Virgin Airline founder
Richard Branson, world famous designer
Philippe Stark and broadcasting mogul
Barry Diller are all part of this
immersive experience. All these great
personalities come to a price, a pretty
high price in fact. Passes for C2-MTL
festival, which go on for about 3 days,
start at $2000 and can go up to $3000
depending on how many speeches you
want to see and how many workshops
you want to take part in. At this price,
you come to expect a lot more than a
conference weekend. Well you won’t be
surprised to know that it has a lot more
to offer. Every night, world-renown
chefs and Dj’s will make your evening
as unforgettable as your day was. Note
that the festivities run for 24 hours a day.
Big businesses such as General Electric
and Google have stands where they ask
for your feedback on future prototypes.
One of the biggest assets of C2-MTL is
probably the networking opportunity.
“There are a lot of success stories out
there.” said Nadia Lakhdari, the vice
president of content and event program.
Partnerships are formed, ideas become
businesses and business problems get
solved by with ideas. Some say that the
last time an event created such a “buzz”
was expo 67 or the 1976 Olympics. In
fact, C2-MTL gives Montreal such a
great visibility that all three levels of
government, Ottawa, Quebec and
Montreal, all gave subsidies that add up
to 10 million dollars. Founder Jean-
François Bouchard hopes the festival
could make Montreal a city that is
known as the metropolis of creativity
and commerce. People come from all
over the world to live the experience of
this festival because of the guests and
business opportunities, but also for the
special meet up between two types of
thinking: artists and designers that are
trying to make a living out of their
creativity and business people and
entrepreneur who have a deep
understanding of the marketing world
and it principal, but that often seem to
have a problem when running out of
solutions. Having a new, clear and
creative eye on a project can lead to
huge results. It is not the first time that
commerce and creativity have been
Novembre 2013 [HERE AND NOW]
36
linked but it is the first time an event has
brought the elite in each aspects of this
process and dedicated its members to
help one another. It is certainly the
human aspect of this festival that makes
it a success. When you see two types of
thinking converging into a positive
conclusion you come to expect more of
these collaborations. What if scientist
and philosophers were working on
projects together, wouldn’t that lead to
fascinating results?

Céline’s life Marie-Philippe Poulin-Samson
Céline Dion is one of the biggest
singers in the world. In the beginning of
her life, she was born in a modest family
on March 30th
1968; Céline is the one
youngest of 14 children of a musical
family. Her parents, both musicians,
were played music in bar and on
weekends and the family performed in
front of the local population. From the
age of 5, Céline and her brothers and
sisters and she developed already the
ability to perform live.
It’s at the age of 12 that Céline wrote a
song, with her mother and her brother
Jacques, which would change the course
of her life. The song is “Ce n’était qu’un
rêve”
The song was sent to one of the
big Quebec agents, René Angélil, by her
brother Michel in 1980. It was in 1981
that Mr. Angélil was taken by the voice
of the little Céline and he was
determined to make her become
internationally known from everybody.
In a short time, Céline published her 2
firsts albums and from 1982 and people
who lived in France are already
beginning to know her.
She represented France for many
events like the Yamaha World Song
Festival in Tokyo when she won the
Gold Medal for the Top Performer. But
in Quebec, she is the new celebrity,
everybody was proud of Céline success.
She sang for Pope Jean-Paul II and with
many great singers such as Patrick
Sebastien. It was at this point that her
internationally career begun.
Novembre 2013 [HERE AND NOW]
37
In 1987, she signed a contract
with CBS. She changed her look and
became a modernized Céline with more
commercial songs. In 1990, she finally
released her first english album
“Unison”. Celine's international
breakthrough came when she recorded
the title track for the soundtrack to the
animated Disney hit movie “Beauty and
the Beast”. The song went to number
one and garnered an Academy Award
and a Grammy Award.
Her career is well established, a
great new spell goes out. Celine and
Rene Angelil get married in 1994.
Celine's career continues to grow
thanks to many shows like the one at the
Stade de France in Paris with more than
180 000 spectators in two nights.
A couple years after, specifically
January 25th
2000, Céline and René have
their first child, René-Charles. She took
two years off to care for her new life, but
in 2003, she was back with a big show in
Las Vegas: “A New Day”. The show
was a big success.
In 2008, she began her Taking
Chance World tour. She went through
five continents, 23 countries and 93
cities. After this big world tour, the
family of Céline and René expanded.
The October 23th, Céline twins child
were born. Celine did not take a big
break for the twins; from March 25,
2010 she made a comeback with a new
show in Las Vegas. The show received
excellent critical all around the world.
With each album release, Celine
succeed to surpass her previous
achievements and, along the way, she
became one of the biggest singers of the
world's pop stars. Who would have
thought that the best kept secret in
Quebec conquer the world in this way?

Movies reviews
Father and guns (2009)
Kelly Kupin Fournier
Father and guns is a movie
directed by Émile Gaudreault. It’s a cop
comedy but there’s also a little bit of
thriller along the story. The actors
featured in this film, just to name a few,
are Michel Côté, Louis-José Houde,
Rémy Girard and, Luc Senay. This
movie tells the story of two cops, who
are father and son. They are being asked
to work together to save the life of a
colleague who has been kidnapped by a
biker gang. The problem is that they
can’t stand each other. So they will go
undercover in a mission, with some
friction, to find some information about
the kidnapping.
This film is very entertaining
because the texts are funny and at the
same time there’s a little suspense. The
casting is perfect because all the actors
are very good and are all well-known in
Quebec; some have lots of experience in
movies. The fact that they are good
actors makes it very special for the
viewer. They can make us easily believe
in their characters and we even get
attached to them. We have no problem
understanding their emotions and it’s
mostly due to the talent of the actors. It’s
also a good movie because throughout
this cop comedy the story includes the
ups and downs of the father and son
relationship. They deal with this serious
subject with a good sense of humour.
Who better to make a comedy then
Louis-José-Houde, who has less
experience in movies but is a great
stand-up comedian?. He shows in this
movie that he has a great career as a
leading actor. The movie is much
funnier because of his amazing sense of
delivery.

La guerre des tuques: THE
Quebec film
Michelle McKelvey-Faucher (Arts and
letters)
Some movies represent well the
culture of a civilization or show what
life is in this country, province, etc. For
Quebec, it's La guerre des tuques by
André Melançon (1984), one of the best
movies of the 20th century.
Also one of the most successful
movies in Quebec, La guerre des tuques
is a simple story about kids who form
two
groups that will engage in snowball
fights during the Christmas holidays.
Having seen this film recently for
the first time since I was a kid, I was
amazed at how it hasn't lost any of its
appeal after all these years. Adults
watching this will get a warm case of
nostalgia (as well as some good laughs)
and kids will be treated to a tale of
friendship, loss and peace all while
having a great time.
I would say the main theme here
is youthful innocence coming to a head
with the realities of life, but I must admit
that this movie has a really simple plot,
and that sometimes, the characters are
"two-dimensional". But it's a classic ― a
cult movie in Quebec ― and classics are
timeless. After all, this movie inspired a
spin-off (La forteressesuspendue by
Roger Cantin in 2001) so it never
becomes too old-fashioned to be watch.
Seriously, everyone can enjoy
this film; it's all ages, although it is
directed more for children with a
childlike humor.
This film is not spectacular nor is
an oscar winning movie but it brings
back memories for whoever watched it
when they were younger or brings a little
bit of joy still while showing what life in
Quebec looks like during the winter
when you are a kid.

The Dark Knight By Charles Perreault
Christopher Nolan’s second
movie of the Batman trilogy is a
masterpiece. IMBD listed The Dark
Knight in sixth position on its top
movies of all-time list. The
performance of the actors in this opus
of the trilogy was legendary. Heath
Ledger did the best performance of is
career in the skin of Joker previously
acted by the Jack Nicholson.
Christian Bale once again did
an Academy Award performance in
the suit of Batman. Morgan Freeman
and Michael Kane also stared in this
movie. The story takes place after the
event of the arrival of Batman in
Gotham City. The more the story
progress the more the line between
good and evil is thinner. At the end of
the movie you can question yourself if
Batman is a real hero or just someone
working for his own behalf. This
ending changes the whole structure of
normal superhero movies.
To conclude, The Dark Knight is
the greatest adaptation that in many
ways exceeds the base story. This
movie is not perfect, but it is pretty
close.

The fascinating life under the St-Lawrence River
Samantha Lavoie, social sciences
It’s amazing to know that you
don’t have to go all over the world to see
impressive and wonderful attractions.
Here, in Quebec, there are many places
where people can marvel at the
landscape and various animals like the
Saguenay fjord and the St-Lawrence
River. This region is one of the most
tourists in Quebec, where you can
observe a multitude of species in a
marine environment.
Quebec is a renowned place for
whale watching and there are people
who come from everywhere to see those
enormous mammals because ‘’Quebec is
one of the few places in the world where
you can see such a wide variety of large
sea mammals (13 species in all) ‘’
(Official tourist site of the Government
of Quebec, September 10) The whales
are concentrated in this area because of
the diversity of food they can find.
Effectively, the Saguenay fjord is
recognized for the incredible depth and
marine species which is what the whales
are looking for because of the tons of
food they eat daily. In the fjord and St-
Lawrence river, there is ‘’the blue whale,
the most imposing animal on Earth. This
gargantuan mammal can attain 25m (82
ft.) in length!’’(Official tourist site of the
Government of Quebec, September 10)
There is also the fin whale, many
rorquals and humpback whales. In the
north of the river, in the Gulf of St-
Lawrence, there are beluga whales and
dolphins. Those are a few examples of
the marine life people can discover when
they visit Quebec’s northern area.
Also, Quebec is an unforgettable
destination to go whale watching
because a lot of ports offer excursions on
boats of various sizes. The visitors have
the choice to be on a cruise boat or on a
small boat where they can be very close
of those giants mammals. It’s a
spectacular experience and privilege to
watch them burst through the water’s
surface and to see their tails coming out
of the water. That’s the main reason why
Tadoussac welcomes so many tourists
each year and also because ‘’Quebec is
known for it’s knowledgeable
interpretation guides on these cruises,
who provide information not only on the
whales, but on their habitat and other
ecotourism topics as well.’’(Official
tourist site of the Government du
Québec, September 10)
Moreover, a lot of research was
done in Quebec on the marine
environment, especially on the multiple

40
species of whales to try to understand
them and after to protect them. The
Saguenay-St-Lawrence National Park
was created in 1990, dedicated to the
protection of the marine life. In
Tadoussac, they have a museum where
they explain the importance of the
humans to cohabit with the whales to
prevent the danger of extinction for
specific species. The beluga whales are
already in danger because of the
pollution in the water. It’s our
responsibility to make things change and
to take care of our marine environment.
Finally, Quebec is a special place
to for whale watching because it’s a
tourist destination with breathtaking
landscapes and one of the few places
where there are diversified species of sea
mammals.

Down the slopes of Québec Christopher Organista, transition
program
Snowboarding is a very big
industry in Quebec. People easily spend
a thousand dollars on a snowboard and at
least a thousand more for the equipment
and the season pass. The province of
Québec offers a wide variety of different
terrain between the mountains, the
rivers, the forests and all the nature
surrounding us. We are lucky enough to
be able to practice sports in the
mountains like mountain biking,
snowboarding, skiing and many more.
However, there is one extreme sports
that stands out more in Québec;
snowboarding. There are many different
aspects to this sport. It is more than just
going down the hill. It goes from major
events like the Ride Shakedown to
underground street snowboarding,
fashion and beautiful resorts.
First, Québec has so many
resorts, so if you are in a major city you
are one hour or less from a mountain you
can ride. For example, we can look at
Mont-Tremblant and Mont-Sainte-Anne
who host world cup level events. There
is everything over there : half-pipes,
powdery snow, beginner to advanced
slopes and big snow parks designed for
freestyle. But the experience doesn’t
stop right there. While you enjoy your
skiing vacation you can rent a room right
on the slopes and enjoy a nice relaxing
spa after a big day of snowboarding.
Second, the province of Quebec
hosts a lot of renowned competitions and
events. One of the biggest ones is the
Ride Shakedown in Mont-Saint-
Sauveurwich is an annual slope style
snowboarding event where the riders are
judged for their moves on the jump and
on the rail set-up. There is a ten thousand
dollar grand prize for the winner and
more than ten thousand fans also gather
up in Mont-Saint-Sauveur to watch the
show. They even record it live on
Videotron so everyone in the province
can see it. The event is like a ritual every
year for the snowboarding community
because big names like Sebastien
Toutant started their careers by winning
it.
Third, during the winter in
Québec you can snowboard pretty much
Novembre 2013 [HERE AND NOW]
41
whenever you want. Almost all of the
resorts are open at night and some even
all night sometimes, so there is no
excuse for not snowboarding! There is
even more than mountains to snowboard
on. These days, riders take it to the street
to make crazy video shots and try insane
stunts you could never do on a mountain.
The best riders build jump set-ups on
rails, roofs and fences in the street for an
extra challenge. The city of Montreal is
supposedly one of the best places in
Canada to do street snowboarding
because of its unique architecture.
Usually, snowboards are not allowed in
the streets but they tolerate it because it
has almost become a part of our culture.
To conclude, Québec has one of
the nicest terrains to snowboard in
Canada and offers skiers and
snowboarders a good long winter season
to enjoy the sport. Most of the resorts
have been opened more than twenty
years ago. This gave enough time to the

Monkey town
Samantha Lavoie
Short news
Since yesterday morning, Granby
has been chocked with an invasion of
monkeys. The employees of the Zoo saw
early in the morning that the cages had
been opened and monkeys were missing.
The staff immediately called the police
to warn them, but a lot of people had
already called for complaints and
mayhems. According to the owner of the
Zoo, there are almost hundred monkeys
in the town. Witnesses report that they
are everywhere. The parks, telephone
poles, houses and some restaurants are
invaded by the monkeys. This causes
fear among the population, but the owner
of the Zoo, Jean-Gilles try to secure
people by telling them that the majority
of the monkeys are really nice with
people because they are used to see
many persons a day. Most of them were
raised in captivity at the Granby Zoo, so
there is no reason to be afraid. The
police started the survey and they
discovered with the camera that two
persons came in by offense. The suspects
are all the employees of the Zoo,
because the cages were not forced and
the person had probably a key. The
survey is to follow and we hope
everything will be solving soon.
Meanwhile, the police asks the
population to be careful until the
monkeys will be back at the Zoo.

London news
Friday, September 21st 2010
A lot of things happened last night, the
United State received some attacks from
South Korea, and the White House is
actually occupied by the Koreans. Also,
we have found a UFO in Las Vegas with
some aliens in. But right now, I’m in the
main mall and something is happening.
I just heard a sound; all I can see right
now is dust on the ground. I have talked
with a man sit on a bench; he told me
that he saw an old woman become
ablaze. We suppose here that the dust on
the ground is the ash of the old lady. The
lady was walking out of a hair salon.
This might be the phenomenon of
spontaneous human combustion that
happened to the old lady… This
phenomenon is still a mystery for us.
First of all, it used to be an object, but in
this case it is a human that bursts into
flame from a chemical reaction within,
apparently without being ignited by an
external heat source. Secondly, some
theory says that it begins inside the
body, but most of the people who got
hurt by that phenomenon got only burns
on some part of the body. Also, some
people say that if you drink alcohol or
smoke you might be more at-risk... The
first body found out was in 1966, it was
the body of a Dr, Dr J. Irving Bentley.
When the police arrived and have seen
the scene, the only thing left from Dr.
was his leg. Everything around him was
okay; the fire of his body didn’t go on
anywhere else. Some theories say that it
can be also static electricity inside of the
body from an external geomagnetic
force.

Tiguidou/Diguidou (adverb)
eans ‘’fine’’, ‘’okay’’.
Example : Everything is ‘’tiguidou’’.
Use: This term is mostly heard with a ‘’T’’ than with a ‘’D’’ in Quebec slang. It is part of
the colloquial language of the province of Quebec, and is used in any kind of situation to
express positivity. In English, it would be similar as ‘’fine’’, ‘’good’’ or even ‘’perfect’’. In
this last case, it would take place in an ending conversation, sometimes as a salutation,
when an agreement is made between two or more persons.
Origins:
Following its etymology, the term ‘’tiguidou’’ would come from English, as it includes
‘’jig’’ (‘’guige’’) and the verb to ‘’do’’. The origins are still mysterious, but some say that
it would come from the Scottish term ‘’tickety-boo’’, taken from a song saying to ‘’go
slowly, but surely’’. Some others think it comes from ‘’tickeebabu’’ which means ‘’All
right, Sergeant’’ in Hindu, in which its definition is more related.
Quote:
‘’À nous le ciel, les câbles, la tyrolienne, la corde de Tarzan, diguidou laïlaï!’’
-Unknown
Translation :
We own the sky, the cables, the zip line, the Tarzan’s rope, ‘’diguidoulaïlaï’!
