WELCOME NEW MEMBERS JUNE & JULY 2018

2 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018 Hunters Run Country Club

WHAT DID WE DO THIS SUMMER? For some, it was being part of the “construction experience,” adjusting to the various changes, while marveling at the progress on the North Course and the Pool/Atrium. And, points out Jack Gorny, enjoying all that livin’ is easy has to offer here. For others, it was traveling near and far, often with other members, to celebrate special occasions, play golf, or just continue friendships and connections made at Hunters Run. Thanks to the terrific response from many of you, this issue highlights those moments of Here, There, & Everywhere. We sure do get around. — S.W.

Dear Fellow Members and Friends,

Summertime and the “livin ’ is easy”. That famous line from George Gershwin that resounded on Broadway is an apt description of summer at Hunters Run. Tee times are plentiful; there are no waiting times for dining even though we only have one restaurant open, and we have easy access to all machines and equipment in our Fitness Center. The tennis courts are easily accessible, yes, even during what is normally prime time. It is also very easy to get various appointments in our Spa and Salon. All this ease of access this summer has continued in spite of the renovations of the North Course, the Pool/Atrium, the golf practice facility and the newly constructed MW’s Terrace. Much credit goes to the administration for charting access routes for members to follow for safe and expedient travels to get to their destinations amidst all this construction. So why do people love to be here in the summer - even a summer like this one with all the construction activity, dirt, dust and inconvenience? Well, for starters, the advantages of easy access to all our amenities and fewer people on property makes everything a bit simpler. The camaraderie that develops and the familiarity it brings because one does not have to contend with the whirlwind social activity level is also enjoyable. The camaraderie extends to golf as well, since there are many “Play with the Pro” events which are fun for both the professional staff and our members. There is plenty of entertainment for smaller groups including live music twice weekly, Cocktails and Conversation, Steak Night and other special foodie events, as well as holiday barbecues and golf tournaments (both of which have been rained out so far, but hopefully Labor Day will break the spell.)For those who like to venture off campus, Delray Beach with its fabulous restaurants, shopping and entertainment is readily available. Reservations are not usually needed during the week and are obtainable everywhere for the weekends. Basically, all the restaurants have weekday specials like three course dinners for $22 and four course meals for slightly more. More importantly, you can actually find parking spaces in Delray Beach which are an endangered species in season. So, can it really be that much of a paradise with the heat, humidity and nearly daily rains of some duration? Well, temperatures here did not near the 107º reported in the NYC area this summer, but 90º humid days are routine. If you play golf in well under four hours, it lessens the impact and no matter where you play in summer a shower is likely. Speaking of golf, yes, you have to play around the raindrops which frequently last just enough time to get you and your cart wet, but then you can return to miss-hitting the ball or missing putts. Usually, for me, when there is heavy rain, it hits around the 4th hole and I am done for the day— but there is always tomorrow! While we rounders enjoy having our seasonal members here and look forward to seeing them, it is a unique experience when we get the community to ourselves in the summer for all the reasons expressed earlier. So, for our members who have never experienced being a rounder— try it, you might like it! See you all in the Fall.

Best regards,

Jack GornyPresident

Warren and Joan Kahn While visiting friends who were renting at Hunters Run, the Kahns were impressed by the friendliness of our members and the many activities our club offered. And, they were

impressed with the homes. So much so, that they actually purchased the very unit that their friends were renting. Montville, New Jersey, is the current residence of Warren and Joan, but Teaneck, New Jersey, is where they met and became high school sweethearts. Still sweethearts today, Warren expressed his delight in the wonderful relationship that they still share after all of these years.

Warren attended American University on his way to becoming a tax attorney, and Joan attended business school in New York.Joan, formerly known as Joan Glick, will be on the lookout for canasta and mahjong games. Warren, having to give up tennis due to a back injury, has his sight set on learning golf. He certainly picked the right place. The Kahns have a passion for traveling and enjoy time with their two sons and five grandchildren. They call Stratford Lane their home in Hunters Run.

Michael and Ricci Doctrow Over the years, Michael and Ricci have spent many memorable times at Hunters Run visiting their aunt. While here, they very much enjoyed the facilities and warm welcome they received and thus the seed for owning their own future home was planted. Their plans are to visit Hunters Run once a month until retirement and then who knows!

And, if you think that the notion of high school sweethearts marrying and remaining in a joyous marriage ever after is just in the movies, well, the Doctrows are yet another example of this reality. Growing up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, both Michael and Ricci attended Jewish Day School then the same high school where Ricci was known as Ricci Rubin. Both also attended the JCC Day Camp in Harrisburg. Ricci went on to study at George Washington University, and Mike to John Hopkins University followed by The National Law Center of George Washington University. When asked what interests they intended to pursue it was a resounding— Golf for Sure! They have three wonderful daughters, a terrific son-in-law and two amazing granddaughters-so far —and looking forward to that number increasing. Northwoods is where the Doctrows call home.

Michael Biddelman and Susan Wachtel Once again, members referring new members is the route that brought Michael and Susan to Hunters Run. Previously, they owned a home in Indian Spring, but felt that Hunters Run was a better fit for them at this time. They will be our newest “rounders.” Michael hails from Maplewood, New Jersey, where he attended Columbia High School, followed by the University of Vermont. Susan, nee Shein, grew up in Brooklyn, attended Wingate High School, then on to Brooklyn College. Be sure to look for Michael and Susan in the Fitness Center, as they are planning on spending a good deal of time enjoying the benefits of a great workout at our first class facility. They have four children and six grandchildren. Stratford is where you will find them.

Susan Poster Susan has been a fan of Hunters Run for a number of years, having many friends living here from her hometown of Fort Lee, New Jersey, as well as the friends she made during her seasons as a renter at Hunters Run. She is planning to join us seasonally, as Fort Lee is still her summer residence.Susan grew up in Manhattan, attended Julia Richmond High School and Hunter College. As a youngster she attended Trip Lake Camp in Armonk, New York, where she was known as Susan Neuthaler.Canasta is her game of choice so look for her in our card room.Susan is lucky to have her two children and four grandchildren living nearby. Eastgate is her new home.

HUNTERS RUN AND MEADOWBROOK POINTE have a lot in common. Currently, there are 12 households in Meadowbrook Pointe, a senior Long Island community, that are also Hunters Run members. Many of us lived in Hunters Run long before moving to Meadowbrook.

The warmth and friendship we found at Hunters Run has moved to Long Island and has led to many activities we enjoy together. We golf, play bridge, mahjong and socialize with each other often. Continuing a Hunters Run tradition, many have lunch together after golf.

So how did we get to be so many at two great places? Stefanie Meyers and her husband, Larry, said that being Hunters Run members with an

active clubhouse, card rooms and three wonderful golf courses had them looking for the same lifestyle when they sold their house; they found it at Meadowbrook, but without the golf. They also knew some couples from Hunters Run who lived at Meadowbrook.

Before moving to Meadowbrook, my husband, Marshall, and I were told about a couple who lived in Hunters Run and Meadowbrook. One was a friend whose daughter knew their son and the other was our doctor who was their cousin. One day at the Tennis Center watching a match, we asked if anybody knew Myrna and Stew Yaker. Well, they were right there watching the match and were happy to learn we were moving to Meadowbrook. As it turned out, we can wave to them at MP, as they live in our circle. They were our first new friends at MP.

Years later while on a trip to Prague, I got a text from Eleanor and Bob Liebmann, our friends at Hunters Run. They were thinking of moving to Meadowbrook. They knew there were several Hunters Run folks at MP. We were so excited that we texted back that it would be a great move and they would love it. And now we meet in our MP community and have continued our HR friendship.

While most of us may not have come to Meadowbrook because of Hunters Run friends, being in both communities together has given us new friendships and enhanced our existing ones. As a result, a lot of our up north socializing is with our Hunters Run friends.

Sisters Margie Raab and Laura Chason travelled to Paris to celebrate a BIG birthday. They played golf at Dieppe Pourville Golf Club outside of Normandy, which they visited on June 6. Amazing!

By Sharon Sackin

AFTER TOURING THROUGHOUT PARIS FOR FOUR DAYS, Stuart and Sharon Sackin along with Arnie and Lisa Funk went on an adventure of a lifetime, cycling throughout the Loire Valley.

Starting in Chambord and visiting the Royal Chateau de Chambord was the beginning of our journey.  We visited Cheverny, strolled through Amboise and visited the Chateau de Chenonceau, one of the most renowned chateaux of the Loire.  One of the highlights of the trip was exploring the Chateau de Chaumont, with its magnificent gardens and artworks.

From lunch on the waterfront of the Loire to biking along the River Cher to dining in a restaurant built into a cave, the trip was spectacular.  Every day we rode through charming villages, past fields of sunflowers, corn and cows and took in breathtaking scenery. Exquisite French wines and  local cuisine and sleeping in different castle-hotels was a perfect way to spend our days and help us get ready to explore and put on more miles each day.  The gals rode 173 miles, while the men rode 232 miles in six days!

Wales Heidi and Mitch Rubin traveled

here with Mindy and Charles Rose for a golf marathon—playing five highly rated courses in five days, as part of a golf rater trip run by a golf magazine. One of the courses was a Twenty Ten course, where the Ryder Cup was played in 2010.

originator of the project, “Our aim is to erect and dedicate, in accordance with Jewish custom, a memorial at every place where the murdered Jews are buried.”

Since Miles’ plassing in 2012, two of the Kletter children, Cary and Joni, have assumed their father’s mantle. They are involved on many levels—updating the website, organizing and coordinating the memorial services and traveling to Belarus for the ceremonies. Even though their father had no personal or familial connection to Belarus, he wanted to do something, they both agree. “If nothing is done, these locations and what happened there are lost to history.” A poignant memory for Cary is from a dedication in 2017 when the German ambassador to Belarus publicly apologized to all the attendees for the atrocities that had been committed.

A 19-year snowbird-resident of Glens Drive East, the Kletters always looked forward to their time at Hunters Run. Marla talks warmly about her husband’s love of golf and she still enjoys a game of tennis. “When I come down at the beginning of November, I would be delighted to answer any questions about the BHMP or talk about the project’s future plans,” says Marla. “So many people are interested to hear about Belarus and what is going on there to commemorate Holocaust victims. It’s up to us to keep their memories alive. BHMP is an ongoing project and especially close to the heart of my late husband.”

ONE HUNTERS RUN FAMILY’S ONGOING COMMITMENT

Paying Tribute in BelarusBy Ann Forman

SEVERAL TIMES A YEAR, in the eastern European republic of Belarus, the haunting sounds of the mourners Kaddish reverberate throughout various locations in the countryside. What makes each location similar and recognizable are the reddish-brown granite stones bearing inscriptions in three languages: Belarusian, English and Hebrew, stating that these monuments were erected to honor the victims of Nazism. Exquisitely designed by the late famed Belarusian architect, Leonid Levin, what binds and unites these sacred memorials are the people who gather there to pay tribute—Jews, non-Jews, local authorities, international dignitaries—people who share a common goal and a compelling desire to keep alive the horrific memory of the 800,000 Jews killed in Belarus.

Enter the Kletter family. Marla (Marilyn) Kletter and her late husband, Miles, longtime residents of Hunters Run, heard from friends about a memorial being elected in Grozovo, Belarus, to honor the hundreds of victims there. While the Kletters made donations to building the memorial site, this was simply not enough for Miles. “He felt strongly about the injustice of the Holocaust,” says Marilyn, “and knew that more needed to be done to remember the victims and serve as a warning to future generations of what hate and bigotry can create when people fall silent.”

Together with two other families whose similar goals also included memorializing victims who had no voice, three foundations were formed and their donations were placed into the Belarus Holocaust Memorials Project (BHMP); a committee was established to identify locations of massacres and coordinate the construction of memorials. To date, over 500 sites have been identified and 110 memorial sites have been erected. According to Michael Lazarus of London, England, who together with his wife, Diana, was the

IF YOU DREAM IT, YOU CAN BUILD IT! Just ask Arty Grossman. He has captured and built not only his own dreams, but those of his wife, Gloria, their children and grandchildren. Arty built the family’s seven room house in the Berkshires and the separate garage with living quarters above it. He has built model miniature boats, radio control model sailboats, large sailboats, even an impressive 20 foot kayak and a canoe.

A skilled and artistic furniture craftsman, Arty recently constructed and finished, a large, folding dining table, a game table, and a 40 x 40 foot all purpose table. He built a 32-drawer sideboard for one son’s wedding present. It’s made of pine flooring boards from an old barn and is a wonderful antique replica.

Attesting to the versatility of Arty’s creative output is a seven-foot weather vane, wall clocks, a three dimensional - three-and-a-half-foot copper wind vane and outdoor aluminum sculptures of his grandchildren, set in concrete boxes.

Arty recently collaborated with HR resident and artist, Mark Wilensky, building a pyramid. This seven-foot, cherry and pine, 600 piece wood

sculpture with a three tier triangular base beautifully brings the artist’s vision to life.

It all began when Arty was seven or eight, and living in Brooklyn. He began building small model airplanes. At age 18, he became a swimming and sailing instructor.

He bought an 11-foot sailboat. One boat led to another and, of course, the challenge of building —his own bigger and better boat. Not surprising, Arty became an industrial arts teacher. Summer-time, he was a waterfront director at summer camp. And for 15 years Arty managed real estate. The Grossmans have been at Hunters Run for 14 years.

“Building has always been my dream. I love it,” Arty says simply.

Gloria says, “From the very beginning what impressed me about Arty was his ability and talent to carry out his plans.”

With enthusiasm and anticipation, we know we can look forward to Arty’s next building project and the one after, and the one after.

FASCINATED BY BEAUTIFUL MODEL BOATS? Amazed by the attention to detail, the accuracy and authenticity? Struck by the grace of a miniature model and its professional finish? You’ll find it all in Don Saferstein’s model boats. He also has built model stage coaches, covered wagons, and trains.

Don loves sailing and is a proficient navigator.

He displays an artistic flair in model making combined with strong technical skills.

He’s adept at following plans and blueprints. He’s able to work with hundreds of small pieces.

Don is a meticulous crafter and demonstrates unending patience. And, Don likes to fix things

Don was already married to Judy, his junior high school girlfriend, when he began model making. He found his experience as an ophthalmologist and the lab skills he had honed most useful in model making.

Don and Judy took sailing lessons, first at City Island, The Bronx, followed by more advanced lessons at Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod. They bought a 27-foot sloop, and eventually sailed up to a 30, 36 and finally, a 50-foot boat. Sailing became a significant family activity.

“We all absolutely loved it,” enthuses Judy. “Our family had wonderful times sailboat racing on Thirsty Thursdays at The Knickerbocker Yacht Club in Fort Washington on Manhasset Bay.

And how beautiful it was to sit on the porch and just look at the bay,” muses Don. ”Skiing was another great active family sport we all enjoyed and we did together,” adds Judy.

STRUCK BY THE GRACE OF A MINIATURE MODEL AND ITS PROFESSIONAL FINISH? YOU’LL FIND IT ALL IN DON SAFERSTEIN’S MODEL BOATS.

“Now? Well, we both like messing around the kitchen,” Don says smiling. “And Judy is a great homemaker.” The Safersteins do enjoy cooking together. Avid golfers, they have been enjoying Hunters Run for ten years.

NORTH GOLF COURSE SCORECARDS – A decision was made to reverse the nines on the North Course which means that the original 1st hole will now be #10 and the original 10th hole will now be #1. We are working very hard on a new scorecard for the North Course which will entail several changes including our Yellow Tees being changed to Red (all three courses), a brand new course rating and slope for all sets of tees on the North Course (The Florida State Golf Association is working on this and once the golf course is ready for play they will arrive and determine the exact hole yardages, rating, and slope). Once we have received this information it will be sent to the scorecard company as well as being setup in our GHIN handicap system to allow everyone to post scores accurately.

News from the WTD9

THIS SUMMER I HAD THE PLEASURE OF PLAYING NINE HOLES OF GOLF WITH PENNY HAMMEL, OUR DIRECTOR OF THE WTD-18, DURING “PLAY WITH THE PRO.” I knew Penny was a wonderful golfer, but little did I know that I played with a University of Miami Sports Hall Of Famer, an NCAA Women’s Golf Champion and a four time winner on the LPGA tour! Maybe it’s a good thing I didn’t know any of this. My nerves would have gotten the best of me.

IMPORTANT LEAGUE DATES FOR THE 2018-2019 SEASON•Opening Breakfast-December 4•Member /Member-January 8, and 15 (rain date January 22)•President’s Cup-February 26•Membership Luncheon-March 26

These dates are subject to change.

Please make sure to return your 2018-2019 membership form which was emailed to you. We are looking forward to another fun and successful season.

See you around the green.

Penny and her five brothers grew up in Decatur, Illinois. She started playing golf at

the age of five, learning the game from her father who was a golf professional at a local public course. In 1979, with her father’s guidance, Penny captured three of the four National Junior Grand Slam tournaments! Penny continued her golfing successes through high school, including winning the Illinois Team and Individual Championships, before moving on to play for the University of

Miami on a full golf scholarship. While at “The U”, Penny won the 1982 NCAA Individual Championship and helped her team claim the 1984 NCAA Team Championship. Her collegiate successes

led to her being inducted into the University of Miami Hall of Fame in 1996.

In 1984, Penny qualified to play on the LPGA tour, earning Rookie of the Year honors in 1985. She posted four career victories on the tour including being the first player to win the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic TWICE! Penny played 21 years on the LPGA

tour before a back injury forced her to retire. She has been an Assistant Golf Professional at Hunters Run for the past 12 years. So the next time you see Penny, why not tell her how proud and lucky we are to have her here at Hunters Run.

FOR THOSE WHO THOUGHT THAT SUMMER WAS THE TIME TO GIVE OUR GOLF COURSES TIME TO REST – NOT TRUE! Our courses undergo a complete summer tune-up and revitalization. According to Joel Feldman, Golf & Lakes Committee Chair, every two weeks from May through September, nine holes have been taken out of play for maintenance. Each nine holes has gone through the same process, on a rotating basis, three times during the summer.

First, a verticutter dethatches the fairways to bring up dead stems and roots. Next, an aerifier comes along pulling up dirt and making perfectly formed plugs. To finish, a drag net, which looks like a sheet of chain link fencing is attached to a cart. The drag net spreads out the dirt while picking up the dead roots.

The greens go through a somewhat similar process using a smaller walking aerifier, says Amy Volk, director of Golf Course Maintenance. After this, topdressing, which is a special sand, is applied. Rollers are used daily on the greens to smooth them out.

Once each year, the rough goes through a process called “scalping” which brings it down to about 1⁄2 inch. This allows the rough to regenerate. It will take the rough about one month to heal.

In total, there are six additional machines used only in the summer for maintenance, points out Amy, – two walking aerifiers for the greens, one topdresser for the greens, two fairway aerifiers, and one verticutter for fairways.

Recently, you received a brief survey in your email as to what classes you are interested in and most likely to attend. The deadline to receive your comments is no later than September 15. Please, please, please take a moment to respond to it so that the classes we offer can be tailored to what you, our members, would like. We know all physical components need to be addressed such as strength and conditioning, flexibility, core strength and conditioning through low impact or high intensity aerobic classes.

Of course, our intention is to work around all your other activities, such as golf and tennis, that fill out your daily schedule through the week. On the same level, another goal is to fill the aerobics room throughout the week. It would not make sense to have a class that would be attended by just a handful of participants when there is a greater need for a different class.

I look forward to your response and if there are any other things that are not addressed, or you would like further explanation on, give me a call at (561) 735-4057.

Thank you!

SUMMER IS ALMOST OVER. As always, we at Hunters Run are gearing up for another great season for all our members and guests! I am excited to offer a few new aerobic classes such as Barre class to complement our high attendance classes. We like to offer a full variety of group exercise classes six days a week and this is where I need your help.

For the past three years Hunters Run has celebrated Veterans Day in a manner that makes us proud.   The director of our annual program is Lt Col. Peter Leavitt (Ret.). Each year he has created a program that fills the Main Dining Room with participants.  He has arranged to distribute pins to every veteran who attends. Peter was responsible for forming the all-male chorus from Hunters Run (average age 82) that sang for us and inspired the audience not only to join in but also left most of us with a tear in their eye and a wonderful feeling of pride in our veterans.

Celebrating Veterans Day

Peter has brought in a high school marching band, whose youthful energy brought a wonderful exuberance to the celebration. Annual events have also included speakers who tugged at your heartstrings, professional photographers who created Honor Portraits that were

given to a group of our own veterans, and much more.

In the near future he will be sending out a flyer asking for volunteers for this year’s event. If you can sing, make phone calls or just want to participate, please respond to the flyer.

We owe a great deal of thanks to our veterans and to Peter for putting these programs together.

ON SEPTEMBER 15 WE WILL BECOME PART OF THE BRIDGE COMMON GAME. The Common Game is a service offered through local clubs which provides bridge players the opportunity to compare their results with players at other clubs, playing the same hands, in Florida and across the country. It also offers pro analysis. Top-ranked experts provide a daily critique of several boards that were played, and write in a

clear, nontechnical way about the bidding and play so you can see quickly what you did right or wrong.

INTRODUCING THURSDAY AFTERNOON DUPLICATE BRIDGEDirector Phil BenamyStarting November 8 at 12:30 PM in the Ladies’ Card Room

Saturday Afternoon Duplicate Bridge continues.

Monday Night Duplicate Bridge starts October 15.

Bridge lessons for beginners with Naomi Fruitman on Thursday mornings and intermediate with Keith Hanson on Wednesday mornings begin in November. Sign-up flyers will be available at the Media center in September. Mini Bridge with Enith Berg begins Thursday, October 25 at 4:15 in the Ladies’ Card Room.

We like to highlight our bridge players who have an interesting bridge background.

JEANNE BENJAMIN HAD A NOTEWORTHY JOURNEY. She grew up in a card-playing family. Her “bridge career” started over 60 years ago when she was asked by a friend to play bridge and he and his friends would teach her the game. However, she soon realized her bidding was not up to par and began her bridge career by taking a bridge course “Bridge 123” at Queens College in New York.

Bridge Director at her Temple - A few years later, married with two children, Jeanne was playing social bridge when a friend who ran a successful evening duplicate bridge game accredited by the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) for the Brotherhood of her Temple in Westbury, New York, suggested she do the same for the Sisterhood. Since she needed to be a Certified Bridge Director, he got her the handbook, and she studied and passed the exam. Realizing she needed to be home for her children after school, Jeanne started

an ACBL Duplicate Bridge Game at 10 AM for her Temple Sisterhood. There were no computers then; all scoring was done by hand.

Cruise Ships Bridge Teacher - Next came the cruise ships. A friend’s relative was a supplier of “expert leisure activities” for the cruise lines, and Jeanne’s next bridge journey was becoming a bridge teacher on the cruises – a one-hour morning lecture and a duplicate bridge game in the afternoon when the ship was at sea. It was a fantastic time for her and her husband, Alan, travelling on the French Line, Celebrity, Carnival, etc. to Hawaii, England, Scotland, and Ireland, South America, Middle America, and many Caribbean islands.

Bridge Director at a Country Club - But that was not enough for Jeanne. She was offered a position as Bridge Director at Muttontown Country Club on Long Island which she accepted and directed for many years while still working with the cruise ships.

Life Master - She then was told that if she wanted to continue teaching on the cruise ships, she needed to become a Life Master which required a certain amount of accredited bridge points. So Jeanne began trips to tournaments in Pennsylvania, Boston, New York, etc. to attain her latest goal.

One unforgettable movement on the cruise lines was when she was giving a bridge lesson, and a gentleman came in and asked “Is this the Bridge Room – but where is the helm, the steering wheel, and Captain?” Jean and Alan moved to Hunters Run in 1998. They continue to play bridge here.

We like to list our members when they attain a new master level or when they earn a 70% game or better. Please notify me at 375-8949 when that occurs. 70% GAME OR BETTER: Cynthia Silk and Renee Blank

Our bridge committee is currently developing our own Hunters Run duplicate bridge website, www.huntersrunbridge.com. The site should be up and running in September.

Please use the website to find out about upcoming bridge events and to review the results of all of our duplicate games.

Lifelong Learning ProgramBy Shy Kramer

For many years, Hunters Run members have taken advantage of a unique local educational program, THE OSHER LIFELONG LEARNING PROGRAM. This program covers a wide range of subjects and is so compelling and informative that members don’t want to miss the opportunity to attend its courses. The OSHER Lifelong Learning Program is offered at both campuses of Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter and Boca Raton.

The program had its inception in 1980 at the Boca Raton Campus with four classes and 122 students. Today, over 100 courses are offered in their extensive catalog and there are 25,000 people registered in their three sessions— Fall, Winter and Spring. The yearly membership fee is $60, and that qualifies you for discounted pricing: $30 for one-time programs; $50 for 4-week series; and, $100 for 8-week series. Members can also bundle three one-time events for $75, and they receive a 10% discount in all online transactions. Non-members pay $35 for one-time programs; $65 for 4-week series; and $130 for 8-week series.

The catalog is available online from the university website:  www.fau.edu/osherjupiter. Courses are available in subjects ranging from music and history to current events, politics, movies, art and more.

All of the lecturers are well known and respected in their fields of expertise. Some are FAU professors; others are distinguished faculty from other universities. One of their most popular non-FAU professors is Dr. Ralph Nurnberger, who taught History and International Relations at Georgetown University for 38 years. Another popular non-FAU professor is Dr. Steven Berk who is a Professor of History at Union College in Schenectady, New York, and who will be joining the program this winter. He is back by popular demand.

Ray Shapiro, a Hunters Run member and a history buff says “it’s important to keep your brains ‘pulsating’ and the LLL courses will not allow retired folks to stagnate or get bored as the FAU professors are very insightful.” Jules Levy, also a Hunters Run member, feels the professors are well prepared in their respective fields and convey their material in an interesting format. You’ll want to return for more!

The campus in Boca Raton on Glades Road is very convenient to reach since a new exit off Route I-95 marked 48A (Spanish River Blvd) has been opened leading to the campus. What makes the trip even more convenient is the reserved parking area just across the street from the main LLL lecture hall. And, when the main parking area or garage is full, a special shuttle is available from distant lots.

Classes are available during morning hours and some in the evening – so Hunters Run members who want to play golf or tennis can find many courses available in their free time. In fact, one can have their lunch or meals at the campus cafeteria or at nearby restaurants – if you’re looking for education and diversity at the same time.

Chuck Ross, a Hunters Run rounder says “FAU offers a diverse educational program for our adult population. For many years now, Marilyn and I have especially enjoyed Dr. Stone’s lectures.”

You’re sure to find a course that interests and enriches you at the OSHER Lifelong Learning Institute. Check it out today!

FITNESS INSPIRATION

The 16 x 8-foot mural painted by JOHN FREELAND, our fitness guru, in the Hunters Run Fitness Center classroom is EXERCISE INSPIRED AND INSPIRING.

JOHN HAS BEEN USING HIS EXCEPTIONAL ARTISTIC TALENTS SINCE 7TH GRADE. He has won first place in art competitions and has been a key artist in the Lake Worth Street Painting Festival for 14 years. In his freshman year at Palm Beach Atlantic College, John even had a double major: Art and Exercise Science. The super hero murals painted on the walls of each of his three sons’ bedrooms are awesome. Another blank wall in the Fitness Center classroom seems perfect for another mural. John has heeded the cry. Watch for it. Better still, exercise while enjoying it. —Judie Spinner
