The recent USDA approval of MAG-

NATTACK magnetic separators for

dairy processing assures the highest

sanitary standards for magnetic sep-

arators. Four models have acquired

USDA Dairy Acceptance including

the MAG-RAM, RAPIDCLEAN, Pow-

der Transfer Magnet and the Round

Pipe Separator.

The USDA’s review and final ac-

ceptance involved an inspection

completed by USDA Dairy Grading

Inspectors, where along with exten-

sive engineering criteria, the con-

struction met requirements of the

USDA Guidelines for Sanitary Design

and Fabrication of Dairy Processing

Equipment. This included a thor-

ough inspection of the equipment

to ensure product contact surfaces,

designs, finish and much more, were

to the required USDA specifications.

The approved, extensively patent-

ed MAG-RAM™ self-cleaning san-

itary magnet is perfect for powder

processing lines that are difficult to

access, require regular checking, or

for processes that require minimal

exposure to ambient conditions.

The RAPIDCLEAN sanitary grate

magnets can be installed at rotary

valves, screw conveyors, bag dumps

and bulk bag unloaders, or upstream

of packaging operations and bulk fill-

ing systems. This design provides

quick access to magnets for clean-

ing, with the ability to quantify col-

lected metal findings. The magnets

are supported by non-jamming ex-

ternal slides and hinge mechanisms

that support the magnets outside of

the product zone, improving operator

and product safety, and simple effec-

tive cleaning of the magnets.

Older grate magnet designs re-

quired the operator to either remove

the grate for inspection, or pull the

grate through a common wiper seal

for cleaning, risking damage to mag-

nets or operator injury, or having

drawer seize, causing operator frus-

tration and maintenance issues.

“USDA Acceptance is proof that

MAGNATTACK™ Global has not only

meet criteria but passed physical in-

spections by USDA officials as well.

“USDA Dairy Acceptance offers

piece of mind to dairy and critical

hygiene customers showing we’ve

taken extensive measures to ensure

engineering, sanitary design, and ex-

ecution of our magnetic separation

equipment, and to support in every

way, our customer’s ultimate goal

of maintaining and improving prod-

uct safety and risk reduction,” said

MAGNATTACK™ Global’s General

Manager, Kevin Baker.

MAGNATTACK™ equipment is an

excellent choice for the food, dairy,

nutritional and pharmaceutical indus-

tries. With a newly authorised and

Research in the UK and USA shows that,

under production conditions, Wire Belt’s

Flat-Flex® belting is more hygienic than

plastic types for conveying vegetables, meat

and fish. This shows that stainless steel is

preferable to plastic where hygiene and ease

of sanitation are important, especially in areas

where accessibility and extended production

runs present cleaning problems.

Openness of the Flat-Flex® results in less

build-up of contaminants than plastic modular

belts, as well as making cleaning easier and

allowing visual inspection of drive shafts

without the need for dismantling. The advan-

tages of stainless steel over plastic for belting

include easier and more effective cleaning as

well as greater resistance to damage resulting

in scratches and crevices that can lead to

increased opportunities for attachment and

growth of bacteria.

Research in the UK shows that with fish and

meat Flat-Flex® picks up fewer bacteria,

maintains a lower level of contamination

over time and is easier to sanitise, possibly

because the gaps in plastic modular belting

cannot be as readily cleaned. Experiments

with meat and fish also showed that plastic

modular belting tended to contain trapped

debris, even after thorough sanitising and

rinsing.

The increasingly rapid growth in bacteria

on plastic modular belting compared with

Flat-Flex® stainless steel belting, especially

after two hours, is shown by results of the

USE OF STAINLESS STEEL FLAT-FLEX AND COMPACT GRID BELTING INSTEAD OF MODULAR PLASTIC TYPES CAN INCREASE FOOD CONVEYOR HYGIENE STANDARDS BY AT LEAST 10 TIMES, AND IN SOME CASES BY MORE THAN 100 TIMES.

study with chicken meat after sanitisation with

Multikleen. In the USA, where Flat-Flex® is

approved by the US Department of Agricul-

ture (USDA), research shows that, with proper

cleaning and sanitising schedules, stainless

steel belting reduces the problems of biofilms

forming on product contact and non-contact

surfaces. Biofilms can harbour potentially

dangerous pathogens and create reservoirs

of contaminants that are very difficult to eradi-

cate completely. Once a biofilm is established,

bacteria living within it can withstand stronger

doses of sanitising agent – up to 3000 times

stronger than unattached cells – and are

more resistant to heat. Bacteria can also be

loosened and contaminate product flowing

over the biofilms. Flat-Flex®

In the world of food safety, hygiene means more than just keeping things clean. Sanitation directly impacts downstream processing and has measurable effects on the profitability of a product. At Food Tech Solutions, we of fer a number of innovative ways to ensure that your products are of the highest quality. The Novalum luminometer by Charm Sciences is a rapid, highly sensitive ATP-detection system designed to improve on existing cleaning systems, ensuring your product maintains the highest quality. With enhanced sensitivity to ATP on a surface compared with other products, it detects potential contaminants earlier at a lower concentration. This allows preventative action to be taken long before a problem arises, resulting in an improved end product. With easily programmable, customised plans for your production facility you can ensure no surface goes uncleaned. With customisable detection limits you can

go even further, differentiating between low and high risk surfaces. Results are recorded within the device and easily uploaded and presented in report format, handing you control over your own auditing processes.

A damning new report warning that by 2050 the ocean will contain more plastic than fish

in weight has led to shock around the globe and a call for plastics packaging producers to review their products.

The warning, issued by the World Economic Forum late last month, says at least eight million tonnes of plastic already ends up in the ocean every year – the equivalent of a rubbish truck of waste every minute – and if nothing is done, will cause billions of dollars of damage to marine ecosys-tems yearly.

“Without significant action, there may be more plastic than fish in the ocean, by weight, by 2050,” the Fo-rum warns. “Even by 2025, the ratio of plastic to fish in the ocean is expect-ed to be one to three, as plastic stocks in the ocean are forecast to grow to 250 million tonnes in that year.”

The rate of plastic pollution is only expected to increase as growing

amounts of plastics is used, particular-ly in emerging economies with weak or no waste and recycling regimes. In 14 years from now, plastic is expected to be leaking into the ocean at a rate of two trucks per minute, and by 2050 that will hit four each minute.

It is estimated that plastics weigh-ing around 150 million tonnes are in the world’s oceans today – about a fifth of the weight of fish. These esti-mates are conservative because they assume fish stocks remain stable.

The Forum says the increasing vol-umes of plastics, which can take hun-dreds of years to degrade, harm the health of fish and marine ecosystems, causing billions of dollars in damage. It says a radical increase in recycling and reusable packaging is necessary, and calls for joint efforts of consumer goods companies, plastic packaging producers, authorities that manage waste and policymakers.

GOOD VIBRATIONSWhen it comes to process optimisation, Alfa Laval

is a world leader in solid-liquid separation machines

using decanter centrifuges within the food indus-

try. Especially in fruit juice, vegetable, cheese and

brewing production.

Due to the high rotational speeds, centrifuges are

affected by abnormalities in weight distribution,

leading to high unbalanced forces acting on drive

bearings. Left undetected, unexpected machine fail-

ure and second secondary plant damage will occur.

For this reason, Alfa Laval uses ifm electronic VKV

vibration monitoring sensors, to monitor & detect

damaging changes in machine vibrations at an

early stage. Simply screwed into the centrifuge

housing, the VKV sensor monitors damaging levels

of unbalanced vibration with a continuous 4-20mA

analogue signal, and an adjustable alarm set point.

Hence, maintenance can be planned in advance, &

unexpected machine failure prevented.

MicroSnap

When it comes to microorganism testing,

traditional and rapid methods still don’t

meet the speed and ease-of-use demands

of food and beverage processors. Compa-

nies need same-day results so product can

be released quickly and environmental con-

tamination can be averted or minimised.

MicroSnap, from Hygiena, is the only test

that addresses these needs with same-shift

results from an easy to use test.

MicroSnap offers significant improve-

ments over traditional and other methods

by reducing time, eliminating lab costs

and improving usability. The tests detect a

larger dynamic range than traditional tests,

making them flexible for a variety of appli-

cations. MicroSnap’s efficient design makes

microorganism testing easier than ever. Each

device’s patented Snap-Valve holds a precise

amount of specific enrichment broth, ready

to be used for either product or surface

testing. Within the enrichment device is a

built-in pipette, enabling convenient and

efficient transfer of the enriched sample to

the detection device. After activation, the

detection device delivers final results in 10

minutes, making the total time eight hours

or less. That means less time waiting for lab

results or counting plates. Tests are currently

available for E.coli, Coliform, Enterobacte-

riaceae and Total Viable Count. Some are

AOAC approved and some pending. The

Listeria test is due for release soon.

One instrument, multiple tests

EnSURE is a quality monitoring system that

uses a single instrument to collect and ana-

lyse data from multiple quality tests. Using

new state-of-the-art technology and pat-

ented designs, the EnSURE system is an

easy-to-use, flexible, and accurate quality

monitoring system for the entire line of

MicroSnap products. In addition, EnSURE

measures tests for surface, water, and high

sensitivity ATP, Alkaline Phosphatase and

Acid Phosphatase. EnSURE stores up to

5,000 locations, 200 User ID’s and 100 test

plans. It runs on 2 AA batteries for several

months of use. The advanced photodiode

sensor is stable and robust, no calibration

or yearly maintenance is required. EnSURE

is PC compatible.

ATP testing

Hygiena is the market leader for ATP testing.

Hygiena’s patented Snap-Valve technolo-

gy delivers the best accuracy and precision

available. SystemSure Plus and EnSURE

meters can both run Hygiena’s ATP swabs.

Ultrasnap is the standard ATP swab and

Supersnap is available when extra levels of

sensitivity is required. Supersnap can also be

used in allergen prevention programs due to

its increased level of sensitivity.

Generic ATP test devices

Most users of other ATP monitoring systems

are able to gain immediate improvement

in accuracy and precision by changing to

Hygiena generic devices that also feature

Hygiena’s patented Snap-Valve technology.

Snapshot works exactly the same as the

test device it is replacing so there is no need

to adjust Pass/Fail settings. Snapshot have

a refrigerated shelf life of 12 months and

4 weeks at room temperature. In addition

significant cost savings may be possible by

switching to Snapshot.

SURETrend software

SureTrend is data analysis software that

allows you and all your stakeholders to mon-

itor plant hygiene whenever and wherever

you want, and it’s free with every Hygiena

luminometer.

SureTrend can be used to track test results,

quickly identify problem arears and analyse

sanitation effectiveness. SureTrend can au-

tomatically email your selected reports to

as many recipients as you wish on a daily

weekly or requested time frame. Enter the

email addresses and SureTrend will directly

deliver all your relevant, presentation-ready

data. Combine SureTrend with the EnSURE

multiple quality test system and get a full

report of plant hygiene right in your inbox

every day. SureTrend can be installed on

networks, there are no licencing fees and

upgrades are free. Unlimited Hygiena sup-

port is included and the system is fraud

proof, test results cannot be changed or

deleted.

PRO-Clean and SpotCheck Plus

PRO-Clean is a quick and easy way to mon-

itor cleanliness of surfaces to help ensure

product quality. PRO-Clean detects protein

residues left on a surface after cleaning.

Simply swab a surface, release the reagent

and if protein residue is present the reagent

will turn purple. The colour change provides

a semi quantitative measure of the surface

cleanliness. PRO-Clean quickly validates the

hygiene of a surface, allowing immediate

corrective action to be taken if necessary.

SpotCheck Plus is similar to PRO-Clean but it

detects glucose and lactose. SpotCheck Plus

instantly validates the hygiene of a surface,

allowing immediate corrective action to be

taken if necessary. If it turns green, it isn’t

clean.

Gluten testing

Ngaio Diagnostics has a range of solutions

for gluten and other allergy testing. Aller-

flow Gluten from Hygiena is a rapid and

convenient test for detection of gluten on

surfaces. It combines Hygiena’s convenient

sample collection system with classic later-

al flow technology in a simple two part kit.

Test results are available in 10 minutes and

the test is specific to the toxic fraction of

gluten from wheat, barley, rye and corn.

Ngaio also supplies gluten tests from Bi-

oMedal, these tests are able to be used for

surface testing and for testing foodstuffs

and are available in different formats for low

or high volume testing. Tests for other aller-

gens are also available from Ngaio.

AllerSnap

AllerSnap is a very sensitive protein resi-

due test that will detect as little as 3 ug

of protein after 30 minutes at 37C. No

instrumentation is required. Broad range,

non-specific, sensitive protein detection

offers speed and cost savings over specific

allergen tests. AllerSnap will detect residues

of shrimp, wheat, peanut butter, egg white,

milk powder, soy, almonds and sesame.
