Arnir began responding, but his answer surprised me as well, and gave me an understanding that we need to make dua for Br. Arnie Muhadith. He answered to the brother "Subhanallah, your son is a muslim; I have a 16 year old daughter, who is not a muslim, I have situations to deal with such as her bringing home a boy, her going out, and living life as a non-muslim." This statement was somewhat surpris- ing to me, but also it is imperative all of us make Dua for Br. Muhadith and his ease with this situation. Book Review/Prof7/e

RBGOKeviewZei to un By Dave Eggers,Review byMehwish An!

You have probably heard numerous accounts of discrimina-tion committed against fellow humans - you've heard the stories on rhenews and even from your friends. Perhaps there is no greater tale ofinjustice rhan that of Abdulrahman Zeitoun, an innocent, honorableman labeled as a terrorist. His story is told by Dave Eggers in hisnarrative nonfiction "Zeitoun", named after rhe innocent man and hisfamily. Told simply and powerfully, "Zeitoun" makes readers wonder indisbelief, "How could this possibly happen in America:"

Zeitoun, a Syrian-American painter and contractor, was livingin New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina struck. His children and wifeKarhy evacuate to live with relatives, but Zeitoun is set on stayingbehind. Overnight, his world becomes a watery ocean. He lives on theroof of his drowned house, paddling around in a second-hand canoe todeliver what clean water he had to survivors and food to starving dogs.At first, Zeiroun is affected only by the destruction of rhe hurricane. Heis appalled by the police and soldiers in the city, for they simply ignorerhe residents' cries for help. Yet he persists, telling his wife over thephone rhat he was meant to be in New Orleans. He is elated to beuseful, and readers come to like him for his selflessness and love for hisfamily Soon, however, rhings get unbelievably worse. Zeitoun isarrested and what follows is any Arab-American's nightmare.

The book is more rhan just background information, rhough. To write it, Eggers met with Zeitoun's family and visited his relatives inSyria and Spain. Working closely with these people, he compiled a bookrhat alternates between rhe present and rhe past to tell Zeitoun's story torhe world. It tells of Abdulrahman's hard work which enabled him tobecome successful in a new COUntry. It also tells of his wife Kathy'sconversion from Christianity to Islam and her struggle with the hijaband her family. "Zeiroun" is riveting in its honesty and horrifying in itstrurh.

Zeitoun is a story about the trials of a fanlily before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina, It is not only heartwarming, but eye-opening as well. His book examines rhe negative effects of the war onterrorism, clashing wirh the more-than-natural disaster HurricaneKatrina. Eggers tells rhe swry as it is, wirhout embellishment or bias. The way he handles his subject, by letting it speak for itself, is award-worthy: "Zeitoun" has received the Goodreads Choice Award Nomineefor Nonfiction. This book will always serve as a reminder for the Ameri-cans of a horrible mistake in our history.

Sherine Khafogy

My name is Sherine Khafagy. I was born and raised in Alexan-dria, Egypt. I carne to the United States in December 1992, when Imarried my husband, AshrafHabbak. I have three kids, ages 15, 13, and10.

I completed my education in Egypt where I received myBachelor's degree in accounting in 1989 from University of Alexandria.I chose not to pursue my professional Career but stay home to raise mychildren. I was very active raising my kids and at rhe same time explor-ing my new life here. I have always volunteered at my kids' schools, private Islamic schools as well as public schools. Alhamdullilah, I wasalways active within the Muslim community as well as rhe society atlarge. I was blessed having a number of Quran teachers. I attendedregularly Quran classes and this is how I got in troduced to rhe newMuslim group where they asked me to teach rhem how to read theNoble Quran.

I worked very hard to gain more knowledge and sometechniques to teach beginners the fundamental steps that must beacquired in order to read rhe Quran with proper rajweed. Alhamdulil-lah, I have been teaching for the last 3 years, and wirh the grace of Allah(SWT), my students are readers now. In March 2009, I was asked tomove my class from my house to the San Gabriel Masjid, where I hadnew faces joining my class, not only from the new Muslim group butalso orher Muslims rhat needed to improve rheir reading.

The purpose of the class is focusing on the pronunciation ofeach letter of the Arabic Alphabet by studying the Makharij (the placeswhere each letter is coming from), as well as rhe attributes of each letter, for rhe purpose of reciting rhe Quran in the correct way and not confus-ing rhe letters. The Arabic language is very sophisticated; any slightchange done to any letter may change the whole meaning. The NobleQuran is the words of Allah (SWT) descended on the propher (PB VH)through Angel Gabriel (PBUH). We need to do our best not tomispronounce any letter or any short or long vowel as it will change oralter the meanings of the Noble Quran. The Sunnah of the prophet(PBUH) was to teach the Sahabah (may Allah be pleased with them) tenverses from the words of Allah after he learned them from Angel Gabriel(pbuh), then the Prophet (pbuh) would not move on to the next verses untilthe Sahabah (may Allah be pleased with them) would study them and actaccordingly. During class we also try to read some tafseer and learn some ofthe vocabulary to help us to understand the message of the Noble Quran.

grocery stores: Organic milk, eggs, and even a corganic apples. You 've often wondered ifit isworth paying a little extra for the organic product instead of the B; Shireen Hakim, regular product you are used to buying. It IS worth it, especially M.S. Human Nutrition, M.PH. Nutrition and Dieteticswhen it comes to your meat and dairy products. This article willoutline the meaning and value of organic items and why weshould support their production and sales.

What exactly does organic mean? Organic practices refer toconventional agricultural practices from the past, before industrializa-tion and mass production of food. It is not a special type of product; itrefers to food from animals and produce that are grown as natureintended. Organic food comes from animals kept in living conditionsthat accommodate their natural behavior and are free of hormones andantibiotics.Chicken on organic farmFurther, organic fruits and vegetables are free from harmful pesticides.Because of mass production, organic foods now seem to be a foreigntype of food, when in fact they should be the norm. Food products inmarkets and restaurants not labeled organic should actually be regardedas strange. That is because non-organic foods like beef, chicken, milk, cheese and eggs are subjected to unnatural practices making themharmful for us. Animal products from cows and chickens that are notlabeled organic, including USDA-certified meat, are filled withhormones, antibiotics, and fed blood and leftover animal parts, eventhose found on the floor.California Cows are not Happy: HormonesAccording to reports from Cornell University, USDA, PETA, non-organic cattle are subjected to many practices that make their productsextremely harmful to us. Cattle are injected with the hormonesestradiol, testosterone, progesterone, zeranol and melegesterol acetate.Eating meat from these cattle increases the risk of cancer, infertility, andreproductive complications.Milking cow on non-organic farmWe should also avoid drinking non-organic milk and milk productslike cheese and yogurt. Milk- producing cattle are injected with ahormone called recombinant bovine growth hormone, or rBCH.Numerous studies have linked rBCh to colon, breast, and prostatecancer. rBGH also increases the risk of cancer and type-2 diabetes byincreasing levels of the hormone insulin growth factor-I in the body. These 6 hotmones are linked to the earlier age of puberty in girls thathas occurred in recent history, which increases the risk of breast cancer.Studies suggest rBGH could be a contributing factor to the increase intwin births in the past 30 years. The hormone rBGH causes cows toproduce milk beyond their natural ability, leading to a painful udderinfection called mastitis. When these cows are milked, the pus andblood from the infection enter the milk supply, which is still sold toconsumers- and is approved by the USDA! Bacteria from mastitis is··linkedto Crohn's disease. As the Quran states, "Verilyin cattle will ycfind an instructive Sign. From what is within their bodies, betweenexcretions and blood, we produce for your drink milk pure andagreeable to those who drink it." 16:66. Since Allah states that weshould drink only the milk of a cow, it is important to drink milk thatdoes not contain any impurities. Hormones in cattle, as well as pus in

milk is banned in Europe, however it is still practiced in the US.Canada has also banned rBCH in their milk. A number of Americanschool districts and dairy product manufacturers provide dairyproducts without rBCH. A link with a list of these dairy productmanufacturers can be found at the end of this article. Some acceptableproducts include Ben and Jerry's ice cream, Mountain High yogurt, and Stonyfield Farms products.Nobody in Here but us Chickens: AntibioticsBecause of the cramped, crowded and unsanitary conditions of non-organic farms also called factory farms, chickens are fed antibiotics toprevent disease outbreaks and to promote growth. These antibioticsremain in the chicken meat and eggs that we consume, causing bacteriato evolveinto more resistant and stronger strains, The use of antibioticsin our food is causing a crisis in our society. One antibiotic given to chickens is roxarsone otherwise known asa.rsenic. Arsenic causes such health problems as poisoning, heartdisease, cancer, decreased brain function, diabetes, and sore throar.Further, bacteria that could norma.lly be treated with penicillin andretracyclin are now resistant to these antibiotics. This makes them lesseffective in treating patients and is leading to deadly bacterialinfections. A specific example of this is the bacteria S. aureus, which isnow resistant to a number of antibiotics such as Penicillin, Methicillin, and Vancomycin. A main of this bacteria, MRSA (Methicillin-resistantS. aureus), is rampant in hospitals and responsible for many deaths.According to the CDC since 1999 S. aureus strains have been respon-sible for 500,000 hospital deaths and MRSA has been responsible for300,000 deaths. This phenomenon is a major public health issue, andresearchers say that we must stop using antibiotics in our poultrybecause eventually bacteria will be so resistant to antibiotics that we willbe unable to control their spread.Old MacDonald HAD a Farm: Abnormal Feeding and LivingPracticesCramped cattle in non-organic farmCows and chickens in non-organic farms are fed unconventional foodsthat lead to an impure and unhealthy product. Biologically, chickensshould eat oats, soy and greens and cows should eat only grass or hay.Instead, on factory farms they are actually fed rendered animalproducts ,consisting of leftover animalproducrs from slaughteredanimals, bone meal, blood meal, hoof meal, poultry meal, waste, etc. These animal-products are remnants of animals that have just beensl'\p.ghtcred, and can come frum the floor of the slaughterhouse. aGo ·rganlcfloors of the slaughterhouse they can still be fed cow. Since 2006 theUSDA has cut back on testing of Mad Cow Disease and only tests40,000 cattle annually. Although not every recall of meat infected withMad Cow Disease is announced to the public, it continuously occurs, and according to CDC the last outbreak of Mad Cow Disease was inMay 2009.

Meat from these cows is significantly lower in omega-S fattyacids and higher in total fat content compared to meat from grass-fedcows. Also, cows that are fed soy and corn have high incidences of E.coli. There are continuous recalls of beef and chicken due to E. colioutbreaks, and according to CDC the latest outbreak was in July 2009.Further, manure from E. coli infected cows can be used to fertilizeproduce and leads to E. coli outbreaks. A specific example of this is thewell-publicized outbreak of E. coli in spinach in 2006. Eating organicmeat greatly reduces the risk of contracting these deadly diseases.Non-organic farms are run more like factories, and animals live in veryuncomfortable and unsanitary conditions. Chickens are kept in batterycages, where they are so restricted for space they can't even spread theirwings. To prevent them from pecking each other chickens' beaks arecut ofF. This is very painful for them and makes it difficult for them toeat. Baby cows are fed formula made of cow plasma proteins and wheyprotein instead of their mother's milk. Instead of being allowed to roamand graze as nature intended, cows are kept in cramped quarters, squashed together without any room to move. These large-scale, over-crowded farms have led to mutations of avian and swine flu whichshould have remained diseases only among the animal kingdom. InEngland, the virulent avian flu strain first broke out at the country'slargest turkey farm in early 2007. Unhygienic conditions allowed theseflues to persist and mutate and they are now deadly diseases among thehuman population. The number of deaths from swine flu is and fromavian flu is continually growing, and experts .say there is a serious riskof contracting swine flu this upcoming flu season.Sounds Fishy

We have learned that eating fish is very healthy for us, and itis- as long as you buy the right type of fish. Make sure not to buy fishthat has been tarm-raised or from ocean aquaculture or off-shoreaquaculture. These fish are useless to you because they do not containthe healthy omega-3 fatty acids that we should get from fish. Farm-raise fish are not fed algae which is required to produce high levels ofomega-3 fatty acids in the fish. Therefore they have very low levels ofomega-a's. Also these fish are harmful CO us because they comainpollutants, antibiotics and chemicals such as mercury. Instead weshould only eat fish that is "wild" or wild c.aughr. In the case of salmonfor example it is better to get Pacihc wild salmon instead of Adamicfarm-raised salmon. Read labels carefully when buying fish and askwhat type of fish you arc being served at restaurants. An Apple a Day May Not Keep the Doctor Away; Pesticides

Non-organic fruits and vegetables are sprayed with pesticidesto eliminate pest issues. Experts believe that pesticides even in smallamounts can cause birth defects, nerve damage, and cancer. Pesticides

are especially harmful to infants and children because they can interferewith their growth process and may not be completely eliminated fromthe body. Multiple studies have shown that organic produce has higherlevels of 8 out of 10 nutrients compared to non-organic produce. Thesenutrients include polyphenols and antioxidants (linked to lower risk oflung cancer and heart disease, as well as to greater longevity). Thefollowing are known as the dirty dozen and should be eaten organicallybecause they contain the highest level of pesticides: PeachApple, Bell Pepper, Celery, Nectarine, Strawberries, Cherries, Kale,Lettuce, Grapes (Imported), Carrot, and Pear. In contrast the followinghave low levels of pesticides and it may be acceptable to buy-nonorganic: Onion, Avocado, Sweet Corn, Pineapple, Mango, Asparagus,Sweet Peas, Kiwi, Cabbage, Eggplant, Papaya, Watermelon, Broccoli,Tomato and Sweet Potato.Slaughtering Practices

Prior to slaughter, chickens may be stunned by an electricalbolt or asphyxiated by C02 and N2. Sheep and cattle are mechanicallystunned prior to slaughter. Occasionally the animals undergo cardiacarrest at this point and arc still slaughtered. Animals that will be sold aszabiha are not subjected to any of these treatments. Conclusion

Based on these inhumane, harmful and unethical practicesthat take place in American Iarms, it is necessaty for us as Muslims totake care when purchasing food. As Allah tells us in the Quran: "Oh yewho believe! Enjoy all things good and pure," (23:51). For our healthand longevity, as well as the best treatment of the animals, it is best tosuppOrt organic practices. By eating organically we will eliminate theabnormal practices in non-organic farms and eventually they willbecome obsolete. Here are several resources to begin you on yourjourney to safe and healthy lifestyle. I have learned that many popularHalal meat markets sell organic meat: Al Jabani, Basha, Al Tayabar,Super King and Wholesome Choice. Iam unaware of the meat sourcesfrom popular halal restaurants; however non-halal restaurants such asTaco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut adhere to many of the harmful practicesoutlined in this article.

Moulana Abdul Aziz First Imam o/the Islamic Center of San Gabriel ValleyAs Remembered by Br. Afta! Hussain

Moulana Abdul Aziz, the first Imam of the Islamic Center of San Gabriel Valley passed away on January 23,2010 at the age of96 at his home in German Town, Tennessee. He is survived by 2 sons, 3 daughters, 2 daughters-in-law,4 sons-in-law and 18 grandchildren. May Allah bless him, grant him Jannah and give patience to his family.

Many of us know Moulana Abdul Aziz as a kind hearted gende person, always greeting with a smile and readyto serve the community day or night. Many children in this community first learned to read the holy Qur'an fromMoulana Aziz.

The year was 1986, Islamic Center of San Gabriel Valley moved from a rented facility on Colima Road to itsnew home, a remodeled Church, on Walnut Drive North in Rowland Heights, California. Dr. Noor Jehan Mohamedi, our first principal ofIslamic Sunday School introduced Moulana Abdul Aziz, a retired textile engineering executive, to Br.Abu Bakr Vakil, Vice-President of the Islamic Center, Br, Abu Bakr Vakil interviewed Moulana Aziz and with the blessingof the shura hired him as a Custodian & Imarn of the Islamic Center.

He immediately elected to make the masjid his primary residence, taking care of it day and night, opening it

for all five daily prayers, keeping the premises dean, giving the adaan for prayers and leading the prayers. In between prayers he would set aside time to teachreading of the holy Qur' an. A couple of years later, when the adjacent properties were purchased, he moved into one of the houses with his family.

After Moulana Asif was hired as a hafiz and Imam, Moulana Aziz started devoting more time to the teaching of the holy Qur' an. Although he wasnot an Aalim, he had great basic Islamic knowledge. Many cifus, particularly my Eunily and I gained a lor of knowledge from him. My eldest son was amonghis first batch of students to complete the recitation of the holy Qur' an. His students loved him. His art to teaching was patience and compassion,

He devotedly served the Islamic Center for many years in spite of his age and related deteriorating health. In the year 1997 his health forced himto move to Tennessee to live with his family. He visited the Islamic Center few times and was always very happy to meet the community members. He wasvery much arrac:h.e.1to this Islam..icCenrer and consistently prayed for its well being until his final days. Swiss Businessman buildsMinaret in protestBUSSIGNY, Switzerland (AFP) - A Swiss businessman appalled by his fellowcountrymen's decision to ban minarets has extended a chimney above his company buildinginto a minaret in protest."It was scandalous that the Swissvoted for the ban. Now we have the support of all the far-right parties across Europe. This is shameful," Guillaume Morand, who owns a chain ofshoe stores, told AFP.The businessman, who is not a Muslim, explained that the he had constructed the mockminaret at his building near western Switzerland's city of Lausanne in protest, and at thesame time, to "send a message of peace."More than 57 percem of voters upset opinion polls and defied their government by approv-ing the right wing motion to ban minarets -- the turrets or towers on mosques from whichMuslims are called to prayer.

The outcome of the referendum brought by members of the hard-right SwissPeople's Parry(SVP) and other right wing groups was also hailed by anti-immigrant parry leaderselsewhere in Europe.Morand blamed other political parties in Switzerland for not having campaigned againstthe far-right motion ahead of the referendum."They were all against it but they did not explain the issue clearly to the country," he said, pointing out that only the SVP's controversial poster campaign was visible. The SVP had sought support for the ban through a poster campaign depicting a burqa-dadwoman against a background of a Swiss flag upon which severalminarets resembling

Muslim WarldBurka Barbies

From Barbie Beach to Pilot Barbie to Hard Rock Barbie, theglamorous and iconic doll has undergone many rnakeovcrs since hercreation 50 years ago, but none of her previous outfits has probablystirred as much buzz as her latest Islamic look.

It's Barbie in a burka, as it's been dubbed by the yellowpress.Wearing the traditional Islamic dress with a mesh eyehole, she wentunder the hammer along wirh 500 other Barbie dolls dressed inunique outfits at an auction in Florence, Italy, at the renownedauction house Sotheby's to raise funds for Save the Children. The auction, held in late November, was part of the celebrations puton for Barbie this year as she celebrated her 50th anniversary. In her new look, Barbie also appeared in a line of stylish turquoise,lime-green, orange-colored burkas and regular head-covering Muslimveil, known as hijab.

The set of multicultural Barbies, including the burka-c1adone, was dressed by the Italian designer Eliana Lorena in a projectbacked by Barbie's owner, Martel.Opinion has been divided on Burka Barbie.

Fan Angela Ellis, who has a collection of more than 250Barbie dolls, thought it was a good idea to introduce a veiled Barbie. That way, children living in conservative Islamic countries wouldhave a doll they could identify with."Bring it on, Burka Barbie," Britain's the Sun newspaper quoted heras saying. "This is really important for girls, wherever they are from, they should have the opportunity to play with a Barbie that they feelrepresents them."

Bur nor everyone shared such exciremenr avec Barbie's newconservative Islamic look.

Critics such as Barbara Kay in Canada slammed Barbie'sMuslim dress as a "symbol of oppression" and ripped Ellis' commen-tary in an article recently published in Canada's the National Postnewspaper."I have seen some pretty tawdry advertising campaigns in my time, but I must say [his one takes the cake for insensitivity. What's next indolls that are 'important foc girls' to play with? 'Illiterate Barbie'?'Forced-Marriage Barbie'?" she wrote.

Instead, Kay branded Burka Barbie a "mockery of disern-

powered women" who, she said, have been "stripped of humandignity."She felt the doll had no place in Mattel's line of "diversity" Barbies."There can be no parallel between these travesties of multiculturalismand other 'diversity' Barbies -- brown Barbies, native-dress Barbies, pilot Barbies -- avatars that reflect the natural appearance and trulytraditional garb and career choices of free women," she wrote. The Barbie also has managed to stir the pot in the blogosphere.

Responding to a post on the blog Kabobfest, which arguesthat "it's kinda somewhat cool" of Mattei to pur out a veiled Barbie, one commentator sarcastically suggested the Barbie makers introducea line of "neocon pro-freedom Barbies" to balance our Burka Barbie.Burka Barbie is not the first Islamic-styled doll for girls.Back in 2003, the United Arab Emirates-based company Newboylaunched the Muslim doll Fulla, resulting in some fierce competitionfor Barbie.

Unlike [he skimpy and revealing outfits of blond and blue-eyedBarbie, dark-eyed Fulla wears more modest clothes and hairdos, to thedelight of the authorities in conservative Arab countries such as SaudiArabia and Iran who previously targeted the original Barbie in crack-downs.In 2003, Saudi Arabia called Barbie a "symbol of decadence to theperverted West" and banned the doll. Last year, Barbie came underfire in Iran when Iranian prosecutor Ghorban Ali Dori Najafabadisaid the dolls were "destructive culturally and a social danger."Barbie's veiled rival has become a smash hit in the Middle East, withmore than 1.5 million dolls sold in the first two years of its making.-- Alexandra Sandels in BeirutPhotos, from top: Barbie received an Islamic makeover for her 50thanniversary. Columbus ControversyAccording to the Wall Srreet Journal, 22states don't observe the holiday. Whythe disparity? Well, among otherreasons, a strong contingent feels thatthe Genoese navigator's sailing theocean blue in 1492 introduced a dark

period of colonization. Protesters and academics have argued for yearsthat the existing American population, plus earlier evidence of Vikinghouseguests, make the notion of" discovery" misleading. These impassioned arguments around Columbus go back decadesbefore any holiday: Efforts to make the Italian navigator a candidatefor sainthood inspired a tart New York Times editorial that saidColumbus got his "fleets at public expense, on the condition that heremove himself and his tediousness as far as possible toward theunknown west."
