1.1. Creating the project After you have made initial procedures, you can create the MagiCAD project.Initial procedures have been explained in other document. C:\Project1directory is used in this example.

If Add drawing to the model drawing list option is active, drawing will be addedto the Model drawings list. You can add connection nodes between thedrawings in the list and those drawings can also be added to the bill ofmaterial. Missing drawings can be added in the Project dialog (Project ->Model Drawings).

Give the name for the project. 3 project files will be created: *.epj, *.qpd and*.linIf you click the ... button beside the Location field, the following dialog opens:

Here you can see all the possible places, where you can save the project files.Select the folder.

  • Select MagiCAD template. You can use templates for example from MagiCADHPV\Templates folder. Template is prefilled project file, which contains somesystems, devices, components, dimension texts, sizing criterias, duct/pipeseries etc.Note! You can also use old projects as a template!

Location of the project files Project files (*.epj, *.qpd, *.lin) and MagiCAD drawings can be added to thesame folder or you can devide them different ways. Here is one example:

The best place for the project files is the main folder of the project. You canhave several subfolders under the main folder. You can divide the drawings e.g. so that all the system goups are in their ownfolders. If the project files are saved to the main folder of the project, all the drawings inmain folder or its subfolders and their subfolders can be connected to theMagiCAD project.

Storey list, active storey, storey origin After you have created the project, Project Management dialog is opened. Now you still need to tell which storey the active drawing is. First you need tocreate the Storeys list. There you define all the storeys in the building and howthe storeys are located relatively to each others.

Select the group that you want to edit. With the Install storey origin function you can install the MagiCAD origin point.MagiCAD needs its own origin, so that it knows how the storeys are locatedrelatively each others. With the Active storey function you can select the active storey for the activebuilding.Edit the existing information or add/copy new products and information by right-clicking in the right window pane. After right-click you can choose the operationfrom the popup menu.

    Storeys

Select the storey from the list and choose an option from for the pop-up menu.

Import - import the storey list from MagiCAD Room project. If you edit the storey, the following dialog opens:

ID - an unique identifier for the storey. It is not possible to change the IDafterwards.x, y and z define the location of the storey relative to the storey origin. Thisis the left lower corner. This defines how the storeys are located according toeach others.Install the storey origin to the point which is the same in all storeys. Goodpoints are for example the corner of the building, crossing point of module lines.Sometimes it is good to draw a helping line for example from the corner of theelevator.

  • elevator.a and b Define the size of the building/drawing area. A value is the size in x-direction and b value is the size in y-direction.h Room height. If you use linetypes according to objects height level, thisvalue is one height level where the linetype changes. You can add some notes to the text fields.

Install storey origin MagiCAD needs its own origin point to be able to understand the location of allthe storeys. Because of this, all the ducts and pipes are in right place whenthey are taken from storey to other storey (with connection node function).

Give the coordinates if you already know them. Show the origin point for MagiCAD. Start the function, show the origin point andthen the direction of x-axis. Quite often the origin point is good to install to the lower left corner of thebuilding. Good point is also crossing point of module lines. Sometimes it isneeded to draw some helping line from some constant point of the building for example from the corner of the elevator. When installing the origin point, it is good to zoom the corner point closer(zoom window). Use also AutoCADs Snap Intersectionfunction (you canfind it for example by pushing Ctrl-button down and taking the right click.Select the corner point and show the direction of the x-axis after this. UseAutoCADs ORTHO (F8) value on to be sure that the direction of x-axis isstraight.

  • Project Management dialog is reopened after installing the storey origin. If it isok, you can close the Project Management dialog and start to draw.Alternatively you can reinstall the storey origin, if it went to a wrong place orposition.

1.9. Absorption material (inner insulation) It is possible to define an absorption material series in project management.Absorption material is the insulation which is inside of the duct. SettingsIt is possible to create new absorption material in the Project dialog (Project-> Ducts -> Absorption material series)

ID makes all insulation series unique. It is not possible to change itafterwards.UserCode identification for the series.Description - description for the series. This is shown in the lists where youselect the systems.Thickness Define the thickness for insulation. InstallationAbsorption material is added to ducts by using the Change Propertiesfunctions.

  • Calculation with absorption materialPressure drop and sound calculation take absorption material intoconsideration.

Calculations which calculate the velocity (e.g. flow summation) take theabsorption material into consideration

Duct sizing checks the velocity and roughness caused by the absorptionmaterial

Pressure drop calculation takes the absorption material into consideration

Pressure drop calculation of outlets calculates the branches by using thespeed according to the inner diameter with an absorption material. Thefrictional resistance between the outlets also takes the absorption materialinto account.

  • Sound calculation takes the smaller surface area and higher speed intoaccount (ducts and fittings).

The attenuation of ducts is calculated according to SMACNA definitions.

The attenuation of ducts is calculated according to SMACNA definitions. Note!SMACNA does not have the reasonable values for circular bends andrectangular bends with rounded shape, so in these cases the attenuation isalways calculated without absorption material.

The attenuation calculation of distribution box has been changed according toSMACNA definitions. However, SMACNA definitions cover only a chamberwith one inlet and one outlet at the opposite side. Therefore MagiCAD usesits own formula for calculating the sound attenuation of separated ducts.Inaddition, SMACNA does not include a formula for the low octave bands of achamber without attenuation (the basic formula has a boundary frequency, under which the formula is not valid), so in this case the low octave bands willonly have the distribution attenuation.

Newproducts can be selected with two different ways, automatically while drawingor afterwards with Change generic objects to products function. Selecting a product while drawingTo select product while drawing can be selected from the Design Optionsdialog. Design Options starts with Duct function ( ).

Select the duct series which includes the new products..The way to get MagiCAD uses the real product is this new product selection.Select Automatically select products (while drawing) if you want to use realproducts. If it is not selected, MagiCAD uses generic object (as previousversions). If Show warning if product not found is selected, MAgiCAD gives a warningmessage if suitable product cannot be found. Draw ducts like before, and MagiCAD uses the real products (if suitableproducts are found).

  • Selecting products afterwardsProducts can be selected to ductwork also afterwards with Change genericobjects to products function ( ) which opens the Product Selectiondialog.

Female connection MagiCAD can create a female connection between two fittings. Suitableproduct for this is for example MF (from Lindab). MF is added between twofittings if 2xFit-on length + Extra duct length is exactly the same than the lengthof the product.

For example the MF has lenght 95mm for the duct sizes 63-200. In this casethe Fit-on length need to be 40mm and Extra duct length 15mm -->40+40+15=95Note: This product need to be before the duct in a priority list of duct series.

It is possible to draw supply pipe, return pipeor supply and return pipes at the same time ( .)If the command is used first time in this MagiCAD session the Pipe options dialog isopened automatically. Later it can be opened by taking the Options from the popupmenu (right click).

Series select the pipe seriesSize select the pipe size. If the system will be sized with MagiCAD, then it doesntmatter which size is used. It is however recommended to use as right sizes aspossible because then it is easier to pre-make crossings and predict the spacerequirements.Locked it is also possible to lock the pipe sizes. If the size is locked thenMagiCADs sizing does not change the pipe size.Insulation Select the insulation series if needed. Select the pipe positioning from the cursor (supply) pipe.Distance define the distance between the pipes If you want to avoid the crossings between branched and main pipes, you can definethe automatic height difference in branch.
