-welcome to issue 4 of Magazine X-This issue we have the dynamic duo of Gabriel Pena & DeeJay Fuentes gracing our cover. These guys are two phenominal martial artists. You really need to see these guys in action. They put on demos all over town, most recently at the AEON FLUX premier at Hollywood USA in McAllen. Keep a look out for them.

This month we also had a chance to sample the food at McAllen’s new-est (or only) New Oreleans Style Restaurant, The Thirsty Monkey. Read the review on the next page, or better yet, head over there and taste it for yourself.

We also have a new contest. Guess the CD cover and win a prize. We’re giving you a chance to win FREE STUFF. Well it’s free for you IF you win, it cost us money, though. Can you say “FREE STOCKING STUFFERS?” Email the answers to [email protected]

Of course we have all the mag x staples for you once again like CD re-views, upcoming movie info, video games, talented musicians, artists, and a slew of pictures we took at all the places we hung out this month.

Just a reminder, if for some reason you cannot find an issue of Mag X, you can always log on to our website, magxonline.com and read it there. All our issues are available online. While you are there, make sure to sign up for our forum. Drop us a line there.

One last thing. December 27th, a band from Hollywood California will be making its way to McAllen Nights on Nolana. The singer makes props for horror movies in hollywood. An art that he also extends to his band, “Dead By Day.” The costumes are awesome. Don’t believe me? Check out page 23. Hope to see you all at the show. You have to check them out, pre-sale tickets are only $5 ($7 at the door) and will also include performances by locals “Solarium,” “Methmare Motorcade,” and “Of forsaken Divinity.” You’ll be so sick of “Jingle Bells” by then that I’m sure you’ll be there! See ya next month!-Ramsey

review

So you like Catfish? How about Shrimp?Cajun food? Well, you are in luck. There’s a new bar and grill in McAllen serving up some great food, New Orleans style! It’s called the Thirsty Monkey and it’s located right across the the movie theater on Nolana in McAllen.

-The AtmosphereMonkey Statues greet you as you enter the

Thirsty Monkey’s laid-back atmosphere. A huge panoramic pic-ture of Bourbon Street hangs on the wall. We were quickly attended to and our food was hot & ready in no time.

-The FoodFrom shrimp po’boys to catfish baskets, every bite was delicious. And the fries...mmmmmm. Everything, including the Gumbo is made

from scratch using a family recipe that has been passed down.

The Catfish Basket had plenty of pieces of breaded catfish, hush puppies, and the best seasoned fries I have ever tasted. They were so good, I kept steal-ing fries from Zar’s plate when he wasn’t look-ing. The Shrimp po’boy was delicious too. The shrimp had the perfect

amount of bread-ing and the buns were fresh.

-The ConclusionWe love this place. Thanks to the staff at the Thirsty Monkey for serving up some great food for us hard-work-ing magazine editors. We will definitly beback to try some of that Gumbo.

White Turns BlueJust for good measure, I’m mentioning an artist that I discovered this past year. Maria Mena is an amazing singer based in Norway. The only cd re-leased in the US is entitled White Turns Blue and can be found in most retail cd stores. The music in White Turns Blue ranges between acoustic folk to jazz, and Maria’s voice is complemented by all styles. Lyrically, this album spans years of writing, but each song fits perfectly. Nothing more I can say about Maria. I recommend this disc greatly. ‘Till next month...farewell.

Every Month we spend our hard earned cash on Cd’s to listen to in the hopes that they will make our day easier to bare. Sometimes they do, other times they don’t. This is the column in which we sort them out for you so that you will not have to suffer through the anguish of buying a CD that sucks and regretting it for the rest of your life. Or at least the rest of the day...

Through the Eyes of MadnessHello everyone. This month I sat and listened to the new Coheed and Cambria album Good Apollo I’m Burning Star IV Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness. After seeing them at Van’s Warped Tour and buying In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3, I had great expectations for their next LP. Thankfully, the talent and artistry that engulfed Secrets permeates throughout Good Apollo. Right from the start the music is captivating, from the calming orchestration to the singer Claudio Sanchez’s unique vocal spectrum. Romantic and ethereal, the album hints at an overwhelming sadness that fuels the violence and madness contained within the lyrics. Staying true to the hooks and melodies that made Secrets so enjoyable, Good Apollo reaffirms Coheed’s stance as one of the top bands to see the 21st century.

Theres an Extreme form of martial arts taking the world by storm. It mixes gymnastics and acrobatics and it’s taking karate to a whole new level...

A mutual friend introduced me to a couple of guys in McAllen TX who are taking martial arts to the extreme.

Dee-Jay (19) and Gabriel (21) are already accom-plished Martial Artists with several trophies under their belts and their own Martial

Arts schools. Re-cently, they have been studying a new form that mixes gymnastics and acrobatics with the deadly moves perfected

by the warriors of China & Japan. This new form is called Extreme Martial Arts. The result is a high-fly-ing, pulse-pound-ing display unlike anything you have ever seen outside of Hol-lywood. Here’s a little more about them...

“I started Karate at the age of seven with my Grandmas-ter Martin Martinez, (8th Degree Black Belt), in Edin-burg, Texas. I had

lived in Edinburg for 3 months, and my brother Randy and I used to see kids walking with a white uniform by my house, so we fol-lowed them wanting to know what they were doing. When we got there we asked Grandmas-ter Martin if I could watch, he said “NO” but you can join them in practice. So we did. We did this for two weeks without our parents knowing, and I knew sooner or later I was

going to have to let them know.

Sure enough Grand-

master Martin

wanted to meet my par-ents and needed permission for us to continue, When I asked my mother if we could join, she said it was a long process that I would have to accomplish. I promised her that I would. By the age of fourteen not only did I earn my black belt but I was also the kickboxing cham-pion.

By the age of sixteen I was asked by Gloria Tamez, if I could teach her grandchil-dren Mia Garcia and Eric Tamez. I said “YES” come by my house on Satur-day at 10:30 a.m.! When they arrived at my house that morn-ing, I was still asleep (I had forgotten) so I woke up, washed up and headed to my back yard! This was the beginning of my school. Mia and Eric gave me so much inspiration and confidence that I would one day start my own school. I than recruited five more students. By the summer I had eleven students. At that point I started rent-

ing a gym and a year later I was able to afford my own place.

This year I was cho-sen to be a part of the T.A.S.K. Orga-nization. At Scott Kimak’s most recent karate tournament in San Benito out of 40 schools my school earned first place for the most scored points. All my stu-dents have placed in all levels of competi-tion throughout the year. In addition, this year I had my own tournament, which was very successful with 171 competitors

and 25 schools at-tending. I am very proud to have celebrated my second year anniver-sary this week and as of today my enroll-ment is 50 students. I am very blessed with the success of my school and my students. Without my family Al & Mary De Leon, Randy,Nikki and my precious baby Jasmine, I would not be the success that I am. I would like to show my appreciation to the following people:Grandmaster Mar-tin Martinez - for all his support and direction. Great appreciation to Mr. & Mrs. Bustamante and their family. I especially would like to thank Lindy Bustamente. She has always been a great supporter of my students. Thanks to Danian Torres - for encouraging me in the beginning and to Gabe Pena I would especially like to thank my students because without them and the support of their parents I would not be here. Above all I thank God for the many blessings he has of-fered me this year.”

“I have loved the martial arts ever since I was a little boy. I am not afraid to admit that as a boy watch-ing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Power Rangers, and Jean Claude Van Dam mov-ies are what

originally attracted me to the martial arts. Back then that stuff was considered the best out there in terms of martial arts action. Nowadays, the use of martial arts in action movies has increased and so has the quality, and I am loving it. I have practiced the martial arts since I was a five year old boy. When I was young, others would make fun of because of it, but I stuck with. In fact, I remember when I was about eleven years old, I al-ready had in mind the goal of being a world martial arts cham-pion. I didn’t know what the exactly meant back then; all I knew is that I wanted to be a world martial arts champion. Today, I know what it takes to be a world champion and I know in what I want to be a

champion in: creative and extreme open hand and weap-ons forms. For those who don’t know what forms are, let me explain. Forms, tradi-tionally known as katas, are exhi-bitions of skill by a martial artist. Tradition-ally they were exercises

that one used to prac-tice the various skills of their martial arts. It would take intense fo-cus and concentration to learn and master these traditional forms. In some martial arts, no matter how skilled you are, I heard to fully learn a form it takes about two or three years and then another four or five to master. Nowadays, forms have been mod-ernized. Competitors incorporate modern acrobatic and gym-nastics into their forms routines. Just think of all of the crazy martial arts stuff you’ve seen in movies these last five-ten years, subtract the wires and special ef-fects, and multiply that by at least ten and you’ll get a good idea of what it is modern competitors, such as myself and my friend DJ do. Check out bilang.com andsieswi-pepro.com and look at the videos. We do stuff like what you’ll see on there. Recently, my skills have been improving like crazy. I actu-ally qualified for the National Blackbelt League’s Supergrands World Championship Tournament. Sev-eral of the world’s best competitors take part in the tourna-ment. However I have decided, to go train with Sideswipe in Il-linois instead because they will help prepare for the most prestigious martial arts circuit around- NASKA (North American Sport Karate Association). Hope-fully, that training will help me with my goal of winning as many world circuit NASKA tournaments and NBL

world championships in my competition career. My other goal in the martial arts is to make my martial arts school- located at Elite Sports Club & Spa McAllen, TX- success-ful. I plan on building up all my students to be well rounded and highly skilled martial artists. They will all learn how to defend themselves in a fight, just like you can learn at most martial arts schools, but they will also learn modern sport martial arts plus get a more focused full body workout. Many schools only focus on martial arts skill and forget to build up the bodies of their martial arts students. What’s the use of learning martial arts if your body is not in ad-equate shape to use what you know effec-tively? This leads me to my most important goal, no matter what I want to help each and every single one of my students achieve whatever goal(s) they have for themselves in the martial arts. Whether is to get in shape, learn how to defend themselves, be a world champion competitor, etc., I will always do whatever I can to help them out and guide them towards success.

I would like to thank the following people:My parents- if not for there hard work to support my family, I wouldn’t have been able to pursue my dreamsThe rest of my family- They have always sup-ported me in whatever is that I do.Master Martin Marti-

nez- He has been my instructor since I was five. I am the martial artist that I am today in large part because of him. Danian Torres-good friend who has helped me gain confidence vital to my perfor-mances and taught be the basics of extreme sport martial arts. Bobby Ponce- good friend who has taught me some basic tumbling and close quarters combat.DJ Fuentes- My martial art training partner and good friend, We both have come a long way and working together, we should able to reach all of our goals in the martial arts.

To all of the above and to all my friends not mentioned, thank you for your love and support.”

“Out of pure boredom, lack of wardrobe finances and heartbreak, D-

shirts was born. D-Shirts were produced strictly for ourselves to provide

us with something different to wear. Shirts later, our friends wanted one

of their own.

D-shirts are merely simple tee’s with hand sewn felt designs that are

developed in our minds. Each design has a name, ranging from “Wings of Sin” and

“Fairytale”. D-shirts are fit to satisfy every age and size.

You might ask, “What makes your tees different from all others?” Each design is hand sewn by either

one of us, so not one D-Shirt is the same. Time, effort, and more often than we would like to admit,

blood, are put into the making of each D-shirt.

In addition, D-Shirts are proud to sponsor

the following international bands: The

Forecast, Popvert, The Background,

and Shot Down Stars.

D-Shirts have made their way to

New Zealand, Canada, Germa-

ny, Sweden, and all over the na-

tion, D-Shirts are no where near

done. We’re not stopping till

we have one in your

closet.

We thank God for whatever talent we have, without Him, we’re noth-ing.”

We’re sisters, we’re best friends, we are D-Shirts.

“Tattooing started as a hobby

and just progressed from there.

I love my job. I love meeting

new people, learning, and

giving the customer something

no one can take from them.

I have 16 tats, each done by

different artists and I have my

earlobes and septum pierced.

My septum is stretched to a

“0” guage. It was kinda like

being punched in the face.

my nose and the gums were

swollen and I had a headache

tats, I forgot I have one on my

head.”

“I specialize in Black and Grey tat-too art. More so into the religious and darker side of art. My influences are anything from Olivia, Boris Vallejo, H.R. Giger, or Sorayama. And for tattoos I really like Diana Cook and Paul Booth. I got my first tat at 12 yrs old. I did it myself with a homemade machine, experimenting on myself. I ended

up inking my initials on my knuckles. I enjoy everything about what I do, and when I say everything, I mean it every-thing from the artwork to the happy customer afterwards. Every time I do a new tattoo, I remember why I be-came an artist in the first place.”

“This is Snake I am at the Sneaking Point”, this is a quote that reminds us of the fantastic story known to us all as Metal Gear Solid. This game has changed the way Tactical es-pionage games are played from the early Nintendo version to the latest installment that will come out on the PS3. The Story

is somewhat confus-

ing and sometime pointless but all in all it is a story that made people cry. I am go-ing to do my best to explain the game in a nutshell.

In Metal Gear Solid 3 we learn about Snake and the defector “The Boss”. In this story their goal is to stop a man by the name of Volgin from creating a tank that can launch Nu-clear weapons. You meet a few people on the way but one stands out the most, his name is “Ocelot”. During the game you fight him but you can’t kill him. You hear from “The Boss” about what he life has been and how it is going to affect

the lives of many

people. A secret about this game story is that Ocelot (Adamska) is the long lost son of “The Boss’ and “The Fear”. Then on to Metal Gear Solid......

In this story you meet Solid and Liquid Snake Clones creat-ed from Naked Snake (Big Boss, name given to him after killing “The Boss”). Solid Snake is battling to stop the creation of a “walking tank that has nuclear capabilities”(I know its like that the whole way through). The other Liquid Snake is a brainiac clone that will stop at nothing to get this tank go-ing. On his way he meets a man by the name of Hal Em-merich (Otacon), a computer genious that was kidnapped for the sole purpose of tanks AI(Art. Intel). During this you meet a man named Gray Fox who has a run in with Ocelot and cuts is hand off (jedi style). At the end

Solid snake kills Liguid snake and the earth is saved once again by the hero........wait theres still more I can’t forget “Sons of Liberty”

In this story you meet Jack I mean “Raid-en” a solider sent in to destroy a water based platform that is host to many of

these “Metal Gears”. I know its getting a bit repetitive but wait there is still so much more....

Turns out that message was sent to Solid Snake and Otacon so they off to the rescue. While in this, the story takes a dramatic turn. Oce-lot is tormented and possessed by Liquid snake because he took Liquids arm to replace the one that was taken off. This is happening because since he is “the Sorrow’s” son he acts as a medium for the spirit of Liquid snake. Now enters Solidus, the perfect Clone of the “3 Snakes” Project. He was a sleeper ( something like the Manchurian Canidate) well he is called in for this special task. To make a long story short it turns out that the entire game was a remake of the first metal gear and it was to test how snake clones react to various missons. A bit messed up right? You’re telling me...

Now to hear that the Next game will happen 40 years from the last; wow what a turn of events. I did the best I can do in this short space. If you have any (and I mean any) questions about this let me know.
