Creating a Mahara Group for collaboration.

Navigation in Mahara uses tabs. This tutorial shows how to set up a space which is shared by several

Mahara users in order to work together to create shared pages or collections for publishing.

    (1) Setting up the group

To create a group, go to the groups tab and click new group . Name the group and select appropriate

    settings.

Click on the information logo to find out more about the options.

Allow all members to create and edit pages .

    (2) Adding members to the group

If your group is accessed by invitation only, you do this by sending out invitations. Go to the groupyou have collected (it is now under the groups tab under my groups ). Find your colleagues throughthe search field. If the system cannot find them it is because they have never accessed Mahara. Youwill need to encourage them to click on the network server link to Mahara from our

    Languages@Warwick Moodle.

You can invite individuals or send multiple invitations using the link to send an invitation to join the

    group:

This needs to be done by the person who set up the group , as they are automatically theadministrator of the group. Your colleagues then need to respond to this invitation they will get an

email with a link for accepting and also a message will appear on their Mahara Dashboard in the topright area when they next log in.

    (3) Creating pages

To create a page, you first select the group (Dashboard, Group, , Pages). Now youcan create pages which specifically belong to this group.

The first task is to name the page. The description you give is not part of the page content . The

details of how to edit pages are the same as for pages owned by an individual.

All members of the group can see the pages you create from within the group. They can also edit

the page, adding content and rearranging existing content.

    Creating a collection

As yet, you just have pages, and you may want to join several pages together in a collection . To dothis, follow the same path as when creating pages, ( Dashboard, Group, ) but now

select Collections . The same steps are used for a group s collection as for an individual s collection .

The second step in setting up a collection is to add the pages that you want included in the

    collection.

You are then offered the pages that exist in the group at this stage and you just select them, click

    add pages and save.

For now, this means that the pages you collected are buddle together and there is a link to each of those pages in a line above the page on display. All members of the group can see the collection andedit any page in the collection by clicking the edit page link (no need to go back to the separate

pages, but editing could be done there too).

You can add further group pages to the collection at any time. To do this, find the group collection(Dashboard, Group, , Collections ) and to the right of the named collection, you willsee some small icons . Hover over them and select manage pages . Any newly created pages willshow and you can select them, clicking add and save . You can also re-order the pages, by using

the up and down arrows to the left of the page names in the collection.

    (4) Sharing you collection with others

There are two possible ways to share your group s pages or collections.

You can use the settings available under the share tab:

These are very detailed. You can share content for a limited time period with the public or specificemail addresses.

Or you can ask Mahara to generate a URL to your collection. There is a secret URL icon to the right.

Click it, then click add and a URL will pop up. Just copy the link and share it with others.
