Historical Background

The year is 1920 and Africans are struggling to regain power from European countries.The colonizers are using the colonized for their own economical benefits. In 1920’s and 1930’s new leaders unique and proud of their heritage rise against

colonizers.Western-educated Africans begin to criticize the injustice of imperial rule.Amritsar massacre, 4/13/1919, was the turning point for many Indians which convincedIndia that they needed to govern themselves.During WW1 British government sent more than a million Indians to serve overseas. The British promised Indians greater self-government. But when fighting ended Britainonly proposed a few minor reforms.In the 1920’s Mohandas Gandhi emerges and unites all Indians across class lines.At the time Mohandas Gandhi begins to grow, India is trying to achieve it’s independence.

Biographical Information

Gandhi Came from a middle-class Hindu family. He was born on 10/2/1869, in Porbandar in Gujarat. He was the youngest of 4 children He was very devoted to his religion and beliefs For his first years of school he attended a school in Rajkot and they were always all boys schools Gandhi was only 8 when his wife was chosen 5 years later he marries her At the age of 16 he is a father 1818 at age 19 Gandhi leaves wife and family to study law in Britain. In 1891 Gandhi passed an exam and became an official member of the British bar 2 days later he is sailing home 1893 leaves his family again, and travels to Durban, South Africa for an important job Because of an incident on a train he becomes a member of the Supreme Court in South Africa and is

more of a spokesman for non-whites. He was always arrested for defying British law and was always found in most strikes against British,

wearing a white cloth. Gandhi became convinced that if India helped Great Britain in her struggle against Germany in World

War I (1914-1918), they would be rewarded with self government. Most of his life he spent fighting for equality, peace, and happiness He also fasted to prove a point or as a nonviolent method for India’s independence

Influence on the World

Most Important Indian Political and Spiritual Leader of the 20th century

His influence was so great his methods were later used by many political activists around the world

Although he was a man of his faith, he didn’t create any specific dogma for his followers

Mohandas Gandhi is considered the father of the Indian independence movement.

nominated five times between 1937 and 1948 Gandhi was also the runner-up to Albert Einstein as "Person of the

Century“ at the end of 1999
