From The President’s desk---

July has come and the new Rotary Year has set in. Every year brings out a change of office bearers at the Global, District, and Club levels. New teams take charge. Change and continuity coexist in Rotary, as in all aspects of life. Continuity to uphold the key ideals of Rotary, change to do something better, have a wider vision and reach out to many more. After the wake of the tremendous efforts and its resultant success in organizing our Global Warming Seminar, the dust is settling down and we are back to normal activities in the Club. The year has begun well with three new members joining the Rotary World. We promise them an action filled year ahead. This year, we would like to concentrate amongst others, on the following: More interactions of our family with our Rotary activities Carry forth our action plan for Global Warming mitigation Focus on the thrust areas like solar heating, skin donation awareness and street adoption. FCRA clearance

Let us reach out to the community directly and touch the lives of the needy by our service and actions.

Wishing all the Rotarians of our Club and their families a fun filled exciting year with a large number of fulfilling projects. I am sure all of you will participate in all our activities with full vigour and enthusiasm.

Dr. Khare on ‘Acupressure - A Miracle’

Dr. Khare is an Eminent Surgeon, Urologist with J J group of hospitals, examiner for MS and MBBS. About 8-10 years back he developed interest in acupressure and today he is practicing Urine Therapy, Acupuncture and Acupressure. He strongly believes in Yoga. He knows Gita and Upanishads by-rote. He also understands palmistry, astrology.

Such an interesting personality was introduced by President. Suryakumar. Rtn. Anand narrated his experience of Acupressure with Dr. Khare and how he is relieved of sciatica pain and back to his normal routine.

Pr. Suryakumar introducing Dr. Khare Rtn. Anand describing his pain Dr. Khare on Acupressure

Acupressure is an ancient healing art using the fingers to gradually press key healing points, which stimulate the body's natural self-curative abilities. Dr. Khare presented one of his patients Mr. Vinayak Joshi. Mr Vinayak Joshi, has been suffering from a lack of steadiness in his arms for almost 30-35 years since he met with an accident. With the age the condition deteriorated further. He consulted many doctors but in vain. Under Dr. Khare’s Acupressure Therapy, he has seen an unbelievable response in 15 days. His hands have become steady. Initially Dr. Khare started with needles but later moved on to magnets. You have to identify the points in the hand and then apply the right pressure. Magnets have two sides, Painted Yellow - for south and white for north. By applying pressure in the right spots the energy obstruction can be removed. Normally the body has to balance the +ve and -ve and Acupressure Therapy helps to restore that. Dr. Khare has been practicing alternate medicine for quite sometimes. Today he takes lectures, workshops, consultation all over the world. His hunger for knowledge has helped him connect to his guru in Allahabad. With his Yoga therapy people have seen vision improvement & gave away specs.

Uniform Distribution at Seva Bharati School, Mantunga For any Nation to progress it is imperative that citizens are literate. In developed nations, the majority of the population over the age of 17 possesses basic literacy skills in reading and writing, the rate of literacy in developing nations is much lower. This lack of widespread literacy hinders the further development of such nations. Indian Government does give lot of emphasis on education. Lot of effort is put in to push children to schools. But still lot of hurdles like ill health, under nourishment, not having proper clothes exist and that shows direct effect on attendance in school. At RCMM we decided to provide school uniforms for poor students with intentions of improving student’s attendance, building their self esteem and providing them a better opportunity to complete school. Seva Bharati School at Matunga has Jr. and Sr. KG classes with about 105 children (equal distribution between boys and girls) of House Servants. Rtns. Sandhya, Pratibha, Seema and Vanaja visited Seva Bharati on 9th July for Uniform Distribution. Children were very happy to receive the uniforms and thanked Rotarians again and again. Trustees of school Mrs. Thatte and Mrs. Pendharkar were also present. All children sang together poem very happily. Trustees took an opportunity to felicitate Rotarians. Overall it was very heart feeling experience.

Visit to Dolores Centre of Empowerment St. Joseph School, Wadala Pr. Suryakumar, Rtn. Anand, Rtn. Pratibha and Rtn. SV visited the Dolores Centre of Empowerment (DCE), at St. Joseph School, Wadala to have a firsthand impression of the activities of the Centre. Our Club has been supporting this Institute for the last 4 years by providing monthly salaries to two teachers to impart computer skill to the needy and economically backward children from the nearby poor localities. The Centre has around 50 computers and they have a course for duration of 3 months each spread over 4 quarters. In this course, the children are taught basic computer skills, like being able to operate a Computer, Word, Excel, Power Point and use of Internet. For very poor children, they do not charge any fees but for others they charge fees of Rs.600/- or Rs.1200/- for a three months course, depending on the economic background of the students. The teachers are very cooperative and one of the teachers, Ms. Heena Khan has been doing this work since last 4 years. Another teacher, Mr. Joseph Bosco is a young boy, who was a student of this Centre, a year ago. This Centre, by providing this life enabling skill, gives a chance to very under privileged children to have skills to get meaningful employment and thus not only help their families but prevent children going astray into the world of crime. Self esteem and self confidence booster measures are also imparted by the teachers. The Centre thanked our Club profusely for the help our Club is giving for the Centre. We have decided to continue with this initiative this year also and thus making our contribution and reach to the community. The present batch has around 26 students. It is a heartening sight to see youngsters who never touched a computer before, picking up the skills in a very short time, overcoming barriers of language and facilities. Instructions are given in English, Hindi and Marathi, as per the need of the students.

Maneesh Konkar on Personality Development

Personality Development quintessentially means enhancing and grooming one’s outer and inner self to bring about a positive change to your life. Each individual has a distinct persona that can be developed, polished and refined.

This process includes boosting one’s confidence, improving communication and language speaking abilities, widening ones scope of knowledge, developing certain hobbies or skills, learning fine etiquettes and manners, adding style and grace to the way one looks, talks and walks and overall imbibing oneself with positivity, liveliness and peace. Mr. Maneesh Konkar, who is an MBA graduate from IIM Bangalore, has his own Management Consulting Company called “Direction One Consulting” and imparts training programs in the areas of Sales, Leadership, Managerial Effectiveness and Finance. On 23rd July, 2011, he gave a very lucid lecture on the basic aspects of inspiring oneself to overcome negative thinking for achievement and effectiveness in all that we pursue in life. These concepts are universal and are applicable to people of all ages. Rotarians also greatly enjoyed the lecture and were stimulated by some though provoking concepts, which he put forth to the audience. Some of key aspects which he touched upon were: How to work with a sense of pride, confidence, assertiveness and minimizing our fire-fighting

approach to solve day-to-day problems

How to stay inspired and continue to do what really matters to us and not stuck in the routine, for example, how often we have made resolutions and then broken them quickly, like quitting smoking, going to gymnasium, etc.

Introduction by Pr. Suryakumar Maneesh explaining all about

Positive Thinking Maneesh observing members

reactions The basic theme of his lecture was that we should all transform ourselves to think positively and not to focus on negativity. If we think negatively, it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy and what we dread becomes a reality. For example, if we think that we are going to fail, we will fail. The video presentation had very powerful examples, which helped to distinguish concepts like “involvement” and “commitment” in our work. The story of the “Deer Hunt by the Tiger”, for the tiger, its involvement to get food, but for the deer, it is a commitment as the situation is a matter of life and death. All in all, it was a very inspiring lecture and as usual our Rotarians asked a lot of questions and the session was interactive too. The other point he has emphasized was that we should learn to express our thoughts well as communication today is a key aspect which determines success or failure. We should also use the social networking avenues like Face Book and Twitter to market our capabilities. Finally, he showed a small clip on the passion and commitment that is put in by great achievers like Kapil Dev, long distance marathon runners, international gymnasts.

District / Inter Club Programs

Tree Plantation – Harit Kranti Currently we are witnessing drastic changes in the environment like dust storms, heavy down pours in unexpected regions, volcano eruptions, tsunamis and earth quakes. Environmentalists are again and again emphasising on Global Warming and what we should to do to combat the problem. Very evident solution is to have many more trees to save earth. This year District 3140 has one of the thrust areas as ‘Tree Plantation – Harit Kranti’ to save mother earth. DG Vijay Jalan has declared that 7.5 lakhs Tress will be planted in and around Mumbai. All the Rotary Clubs have taken up the initiative aggressively and acting on it. To mark the occasion of Harit Kranti, our Club participated in the tree planting program organized by Rotary Club of Bombay Uptown at Wadala Rotary Centre on 9th July. 50 saplings were planted. Rtn. Suryakumar, Rtn. Vanaja, Rtn. Anand and Rtn. Usha participated in the program.

Skin donation: A lesser-known, but equally helpful gift The most popular organ donation has been blood donation in terms of saving lives and therefore the most meaningful form of donation. Eye donation is fast becoming popular, as celebrity talking about the importance of eye donation and spreading the awareness. The next achievable organ donation will be that of human skin. Skin is indeed the largest organ in the body but the least respected. Its presence not only protects and drapes our body. Additionally it sustains the entire cosmetic industry. On 23rd July, 2011, AG Rtn. Sunil Thakkar had organized a lecture at Vashi by one of India’s foremost Burn Specialists Dr. Sunil Keswani. Besides Mahim Club, other Rotary Clubs from Vashi, Mandvi, Sion, Bombay Uptown also participated. President Suryakumar along with Vanaja attended the lecture. The lecture by Dr. Keswani on the need for awareness of Skin Donation was very thought provoking and at times jolted one to realize the gravity of the situation. Mumbai, needs about 2,000 skin donations a year, or five a day. “However, currently, we receive five skin donations a month, which is inadequate to meet the city’s needs,” says burns specialist Dr Sunil Keswani, secretary, National Burns Centre.

Presidents While awareness about eye and kidney donation is on the rise, very few people are even aware of the concept of skin donation. The important issue is that burn cases up to even 80% can be saved, if skin grating is done in time. The biggest problem is inadequate supply of human skin, and therefore the need for awareness of skin donation.

Skin is commonly destroyed in burns. Flame burns can be accidental as in the kitchen with gas cylinders exploding when they leak. Chemical burns are mostly industrial. Only deep burns which destroy both the layers, dermis and epidermis, need be treated by a skin graft. Free availability of skin grafts allows early excision of dead burned skin, to be replaced by vital skin grafts. Apart from burns skin grafts are also used to temporarily cover wounds and non-healing wounds. Benefits of skin donation: Prevents infection Faster healing Decreases Pain Improves immunity

Other Facts: Only a thin layer of skin from the thighs & back is taken No Disfigurement No Bleeding There is no age limit (wrinkled skin is also perfectly ok) The person should be free from skin disease, skin cancer, HIV, Hepatitis ‘C’ Skin harvesting is to be done within 6 hours of death Skin and eye donation activities are worked out in close coordination and the entire

procedures can be completed in 45 minutes. Dr. Keswani has set up a State of Art Facility at Airoli. In India, there are only two Skin Donation banks, one at Sion Hospital and the other at Airoli. The need of the hour is to increase awareness of skin donation. Dr. Keswani and his team is prepared to give lectures on skin donation at schools, colleges, housing societies and anywhere where receptive audience can be organized. Skin Donation is one of the thrust areas of District 3140. Rotarians need to motivate their families, friends, relatives and community to change their mind set. Skin Donation does not disfigure the body. Skin should be donated with in 6 hours of death. One can approach for Skin Donation to Sion Hospital or National Burn Centre. Currently demand is much higher than the supply for Skin.
