Deanna heads south Several U3A members gathered over

tea and cakes to farewell foundation member Deanna Davies before she headed south to be nearer to family. We wish Deanna all the very best for the next phase of her life.

Beautiful weather for Picnic in the Park

Mahjong Groups keep their brains active

The weather proved perfect for those who attended the U3A annual Picnic in the Park at Tinaroo Dam in August.

Seniors Week has come and gone with many events across the Tablelands. U3AAT organised a Picnic in the Park at Tinaroo Dam. It was a lovely, sunny day perfect for a picnic and those who attended really enjoyed the occasion. Once again I would like to thank Bill Bray for his organisation.

Our usual courses will continue until December, then we will have a break until the beginning of February 2019. Any additional courses will be advertised on the website. Thanks to Annette Clay, our terrific Newsletter Editor, a printed copy of the information is also posted on the noticeboard in Room 22.

Carmel Pacey, who has organised our publicity, has resigned from this position to concentrate on her art.

I would like to thank Carmel for her valuable contribution to U3AAT.

I hope many of you will be able to attend the Christmas function that will be held at Malanda Hotel, Sunday 2nd December, 11.30am for 12noon. This is always a fun way to wrap up our activities for the year.

Don’t forget the Happy Snappers exhibition being held at the Old Post Office Gallery 2nd October to 3rd November. The photos are amazing and it is always worth a visit.

Ken Cotterill has again presented a very interesting and informative account of historical interest for members of U3A Atherton Tablelands. As part of a series of talks during September in the Glyn Davies Room, he gave an account of the main players, timeline and outcome of the French Revolution. The previous week he recounted events which occurred during the Russian Revolution which culminated in the assassination of the Russian Royal Family. .. but therein lies a question! Did they all perish or did Princess Anastasia survive?

Ken has been a presenter for U3AAT since April 2013 and his knowledge across a broad and varied range of subjects is impressive. The first series of talks he gave in Semester 1, 2013 was a crime series. ‘Whodunnits’ which raised questions such as, ‘did they get it right’? Ken likes to involve the audience, having them play detective if you like. That first series covered cases such as, Who was the A6 killer? Did they hang the wrong man? Along with Who killed Julia Wallace? What Happened to Peter Falconio? Who shot JFK? And Apocalypse Now! Charlie Manson and the summer of death; all intriguing mysteries with much to speculate about.

Ken’s historical talks get everybody thinking

Russian Revolution

French Revolution

In the intervening six (6) years Ken has covered a wide range of topics including Australian history, assassinations, disasters and murders. All designed to get the ‘grey matter’ moving. Events such as 9/11; the Lockerbie Disaster; Flight to Nowhere: MH370; Princess Diana: murder or accident; the Beaumont children; Strange Happenings at Uluru: Lindy Chamberlain; the Wanda Beach Murders; the Holocaust and the Bogle/Chandler murder mystery to name just a few.

Ken has given unstintingly of his time and knowledge and all of his talks are backed up with in-depth research often including photos, books, news articles and maps. He will round out his current series, Semester 2, 2018 with, “Who wrote Shakespeare?” and “Chappaquiddick – What really happened?”

I recommend these talks to you. As members of U3AAT, we are very fortunate to have such long-term, dedicated and informative presenters as Ken Cotterill.

OCTOBER’S TALK

It’s time to reflect and review the future of

U3A Tablelands

U3A Atherton Tablelands is looking for someone to take on the role of PUBLICITY OFFICER.

COULD THIS BE SOMETHING YOU MIGHT LIKE TO DO?

The Publicity Officer is responsible for media releases and advertising U3A courses and events through local newspapers, as well as administering the U3A Facebook page. For more information please contact President Barbara Whybird on [email protected]

A ‘Kick-Start’ Sub-Committee was formed in August and recently held it’s first meeting in order to talk about the future of U3AAT.

The outcome of the meeting included the following:

Looking at rostering, Monday to Friday, volunteers from our U3A membership to liaise with potential new members, or current members who want to contribute ideas.

Connect with other organisations to encourage interaction between members of their group and ours.

The possibility of having an additional open day to promote and explain presentations.

The sub-committee is also investigating the idea of showing TED Talks (free talks online) in Room 22, so if anyone has any subjects they think would be of interest, please let us know.

It’s time for our annual break. The last activity for 2018 will be Mahjong on Friday 21 December. Activities will recommence in February 2019. See website for more details.

She lost her case ... A Newcastle woman (pictured below)

has lost her case at the Magistrates Court today after she tried to sue the local hospital after her husband went in for an operation, which left him unable to have sex with her afterwards.

Mrs Minger, aged 67, said to reporters outside the court this afternoon: “Me and me ‘usband ‘ave ‘ad bangin’ sex till ‘e went to ‘ospital and ‘ad his operation.

Now ‘e’s not interested in me and it’s all down to them twats!”

The surgeon who performed the operation and attended court to give evidence said “all we did was remove Fred’s cataracts!”

The sounds of silence ... Brian, one of the worlds greatest hypochondriacs,

bumped into his doctor. one day at the supermarket.

“Doc!” Brian exclaimed, “I’ve been meaning to tell you, remember those voices I kept on hearing in my head? I haven’t heard them in over a week!”

“Wow! What wonderful news Brian! I’m so happy for you!” his doctor exclaimed.

“Wonderful?” asked a dismal looking Brian. “There’s nothing wonderful about it. I’m afraid my hearing is starting to go now!”

Paying his respects ... Two guys were playing golf, one of them was about to swing the golf club when he noticed a funeral procession going by on the street. The man stopped in mid-

swing and closed his eyes and said a short prayer. The other man truly inspired, remarked, clearing his throat, “Wow that was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.”

“Well”, the other man said “I was married to her for thirty five years.”

Bread is like the Sun.

It rises in the yeast and sets in the waist!

Confusion reigns ... A couple in their nineties are both having problems

remembering things. They decide to go to the doctor for a check up. The doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember.

Later that night while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. His wife asks, "Where are you going?"

"To the kitchen," he replies.

"Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?"

"Sure."

"Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?" she asks.

"No, I can remember it."

"Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too, and whipped cream. You'd better write it down, because you know you'll forget it."

Irritated, he says, "I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Leave me alone! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream—I got it, for goodness sake!" he grumbles and goes into the kitchen.

After about 20 minutes the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs.

She stares at the plate for a moment and says ... "Where's my toast?”
