A word from our Principal
Dear parents, caregivers, students and friends of the school
Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa Welcome back to Term 2. Another busy term coming up! The
learning context is Identity and Culture, and students will be exploring their own identities and the rich and varied cultures that
make up our communities. Students have all selected their Options and these classes begin next week. Swimming is already underway for some classes. Please ensure your child has a waterproof jacket
each swimming day as we will be walking down to the pool no matter what the weather. Thank you so much to the parents who
have made themselves available to walk with the classes. A number of sporting events are coming up: Cross Country,
Intermediate Football Competition, Intermediate Hockey Competition, and Girls’ Rugby. We strongly encourage students to
put themselves forward for these teams to represent Maidstone at the Inter-Intermediate competitions.
AIMS Games trials are well underway and I look forward to the announcement of the teams. Thank you to the staff and parents
who are putting so much time and energy into organising what is always an amazing experience for our young sportspeople.
What a wonderful response to the launch of our Fun Run Fundraiser! Donations are already
appearing on the givealittle page set up for the purpose! We are slowly but steadily building up our chromebook
resource for the classroom learning programmes, and are hoping this fundraiser can put at least 2 more in each classroom. Thank you for your support.
The school Values: Respect, Creativity, Mana, Whanaungatanga
and Freedom were unpacked by the students last term, and their task this term is to come up with a symbol for each one.

This has been set up as a competition for the students - some of
whom may not yet realise how creative they can be! Towards the end of term there will be a ‘reveal’ of the Values with their explanations and symbols. These Values will be a powerful guide to
‘how we are’ at Maidstone Intermediate.

Influenza Influenza (flu) season is nearly upon us, so it is time to get prepared as flu can spread quickly in schools. We recommend the following actions to help prevent students, staff and families from getting sick. Prevent the spread of illness in school by:
Sick students should not be at school, sports matches, school productions or camps. This is so they can rest and recover and do not spread illness to others.
Parents please let us know if your child is away sick with flu like symptoms.
Make sure everyone covers their mouth and nose with tissues when coughing and sneezing. Put used tissues in a covered bin or plastic bag. If there are no tissues available, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve - not your hands. Remember to wash or use hand sanitiser on your hands afterwards.
Encourage students to wash their hands regularly. Alcohol-based hand gel can also be used to supplement hand washing.
An Influenza vaccination is recommended for children and teens to stop them getting sick and reduce flu spreading in the community. Further information is accessible at https://www.fightflu.co.nz/ or http://www.rph.org.nz/public-health-topics/illness-and-disease/influenza/

Why not put your name forward to be a Board of Trustees member? Maidstone’s BOT is looking for 5 enthusiastic people to form the important role of parent representatives on the Board. We meet twice a term; to provide governance leadership for the school – things such as strategic direction and raising student achievement, and decisions around property and finances and allocation of resources. Full training is provided. Why not put your name forward to join like-minded people? It is important our school board reflects our community and has members with different skills and attributes. So, give yourself the opportunity to make a difference. Nomination forms will be sent to all parents and caregivers next week. Contact the school office for more details. Blue Syndicate Sailing Trip By Andre, Rm 3
On 8 April, 28 students from Blue Syndicate went to Wellington
to go sailing and kayaking. It was heaps of fun, in my opinion! Kayaking was one of the best parts of this trip! We got so
scared in case the boats tipped over! But apparently they don’t. My friends and I had so much fun; it was an awesome
opportunity!
Purple Syndicate By Olivia & Anaia, Rm 8
On Tuesday 2 April 2019, 28 Year 8 students from Purple Syndicate got the
opportunity to bus down to Oriental Bay, Wellington. We participated in activities at Wellington Ocean Sports. All the
kids got split into two groups. The first group went on the sailboats, and the second group got to go stand-up paddle-boarding and kayaking. After about an hour, we had lunch
and some people got a hot chocolate. After that, the groups swapped activities. A lot of dramatic stuff happened on one of
the boats for the second group; one of the kids accidently let go of the tiller (the steering device of a sailing boat), and nearly fell off the boat while the boat was almost on a vertical
angle! After a very long, fun, and interesting day, we all agree that the Safe Boating trip was one of
the greatest experiences of our time at Maidstone Intermediate!

RED syndicate By Erin & Stevee, Rm 17
It was the day of the sailing trip, and we all got on the bus
excitedly; ready for the day ahead of us! When we got there, we watched a slideshow about different types of boats, water safety,
and kayaking rules. We then changed into wetsuits and life jackets, and jumped into our kayaks and paddled around for a while. We paddled around the boating park and under ropes,
before coming back to shore for lunch. After lunch, we watched another slideshow about yachts. Then on with the life jackets,
windproof jackets and pants again. Then off on the yacht; which we learnt was the type of yacht that can never tip over! We all got to have a go at steering, and going to the front of the boat.
We tried to do doughnuts, but that didn’t turn out very well! As we were going back to shore, we saw someone fall out of their kayak! Overall, the boating trip was really fun; we would
love to do it again!
Gold Syndicate sailing trip By Ella R & Alyssa A, Rm 4
On Monday 1 April, a group of people from our Syndicate went on a trip to Wellington Ocean Sports. We were given a briefing on boating safety procedures before heading out, and we
were told that the boats wouldn’t capsize. We felt totally reassured! Right from the moment we arrived, I could tell the weather was not cooperating with us! It didn’t matter because we were
suited up: long waterproof pants and jackets for over the top of our clothes. After that, we split into two groups, and were put on the sailboats. We could even, with a little bit of help,
steer the boat! It was very hands-on. We also went kayaking in the huge waves created by the windy weather; it was SO much fun!

Entertainment Book Fundraiser
On Leaders Day, 26 March, all the SRC students went to the Ignite Sports’ home ground. We had interval, did leadership things, and talked about leaders around the world. We also did team building challenges. It was SO much fun! We also went to the Walter Nash Arena, had lunch, and played basketball, rugby, and speedball. We had so much fun playing and getting to know each other. Keziah Room 3

Volunteer for the Heart Foundation at the Gazeley Volkswagon Wellington Marathon 2019 The Heart Foundation is the official charity partner for the Wellington Marathon again for 2019. As part of this partnership we provide volunteers to work at the event, to raise money for the Heart Foundation Wellington Branch. We would love to have you join our volunteer team for this event. For 2019 we have the following opportunities: Sunday 23 June: Bag Packing, Westpac Stadium
We will be packing the goodies bags given to all runners at the finish line Saturday 29 June: Race Registration, Gazeley Volkswagon, Kent Terrace, Wellington We will be registering all runners ahead of race day and handing out numbers. This role requires a high level of concentration and accuracy! Sunday 30 June: Event Day, Westpac Stadium Jobs are a mixture of working in the recovery area (handing out drinks/fruit etc after the finish line, general support etc) and bag check area.
