sketches

initial sketches80/35 is a huge music festival at the intersection of highways 80 and 35. since it’s a 2-day-long event, i wanted to capture one of the moments of the day. the sungalsses depict the evening time when the sun is setting, the rect-angular version was based on daytime, and the ones on the far left were both depicting nighttime. the following photos are my rapid prototypes of these sketches. my final decision was option 2.

envelope process

final envelope sketch (left)in order to stand out from other pieces of mail, i wanted my envelope to be one large photo of a concert goer wearing a vip badge. this would say “VIP: name, address” of the receiver. the photo immediately above is my first draft, which ended up to be terribly mis-measured. the proportions were the most difficult part of this project.

trial and error

final copyafter creating dimension in my piece with lots of textures and layered photos and colors, i tried to print it on the ink jet printer with special paper. the paper was slick, a bit thicker, and had a blue shiny tint in the light. i was excit-ed to see the final product, but the ink didn’t stick (top photo), it was pretty faded, and the final print was blurry. once i decided i needed to print on regular paper, the final product was much clearer, grungier, and the “nighttime theme” came through like i wanted. i’m very happy with my color scheme, fonts, and grungey filter.

back of mailer (top)the back of the mailer was a feathered indigo color at 30% opacity, covered in the grunge filter. that showed through the cut out 80 and 35 for some extra dimension. the sponsors and the concert’s website are also on the back.

envelope finals (bottom)i printed two envelopes, one without grunge to send in the mail, and one with the grunge filter to hand into class.

final envelopefinal envelopethe front fits the receiver’s name, ad-dress, and zipcode perfectly. there is also a nice, discreet place to write the return address that isn’t too ob-vious and distracting. the back of the envelope has a pieced-together feel that i thought complimented the rest of the grunge aesthatic. the photo is of me. photo credit goes to giuliana lamantia.

this project was a bit stressful be-cause the proportions and measure-ments always had to be perfect, and it was hard to measure on indesign before printing out. i spent about $10 alone printing the drafts and final copies, which is the most i’ve ever spent on any project ever. in the end, it’s a good portfolio piece and a useful trade to learn that can be applied to the real world.
