SEPTEMBER 7, 2018 VOL. 9 MAIN SHEET Cmode’s Cments Dear Beulah – As I take the reins I’m once again humbled. I’m proud to serve, to be next in a long and glorious line, to stand on the shoulders of the giants who have come before me. I’m grateful to Al Haeger and Chrissy Kubicek and Bridgette Bonifield for their exemplary service the last few years. I’m thrilled to welcome Candace Porter and Marie LeRoy and Julie Haeger to what will be a terrific Board of Directors. I thank all the other volunteers from this year and the 124 that came before it, who helped, and who continue to, make the Lake Beulah Yacht Club the magical place that it is. As I look to the future, I’m also mindful of the past. Two parallel pasts: 1. LBYC, 125 years strong 2. JoeSko, part of the LBYC for not quite half of those years, 46 so far My folks bought their house, the house they still live in over on Millsite Road, in March of 1972 when I was 5 years old; my father was Commodore in 1982. So while our roots aren’t Haeger-Hudson-Will deep, they’re not nothing. I took up X boating as a crew in the summer of ’75 and took my first ILYA X road trip to Okoboji in ’76, and I’ve been racing sailboats every chance I have ever since. I’ve passed the passion to Caroline, Sydney is coming along, and Fred is starting to talk about wanting to sail an Opti. Lots of the kids I grew up with, those I either raced against or taught or was taught by, are still around and have children creating the next generation along with mine. Between races I’ve spent lots of time around the club both working and helping out in various capacities, and playing and making new memories. As I’ve been thinking about my transition into the Commodore’s chair, I keep coming back to a couple visions, two sides of the coin: e historical Beulah threads permeate my life, from my growing up years to all the peaks and valleys since then. e one constant through it all has been the lake; Beulah is my home, you are my people. A few years ago, I walked into a good friend’s house, a friend from growing up on Beulah. I saw the sign at right, it stopped me in my tracks, it quite literally gave me pause. I’m on my fifth house since first seeing it, and every one of them has displayed one of those signs. ere’s an incredible history here, woven around a shared love of a magical place; let us remember that, and be nice to each other. SEPTEMBER 7, 2018 VOL. 9MAIN SHEETCommodore’s CommentsDear Beulah – As I take the reins I’m once again humbled.

Two parallel pasts:

1. LBYC, 125 years strong

2. JoeSko, part of the LBYC for not quite half of those years, 46 so far

My folks bought their house, the house they still live in over on Millsite Road, in March of 1972 when I was 5 years old; my father was Commodore in 1982.

As I’ve been thinking about my transition into the Commodore’s chair, I keep coming back to a couple visions, two sides of the coin:

• The historical Beulah threads permeate my life, from my growing up years to all the peaks and valleys since then. The one constant through it all has been the lake; Beulah is my home, you are my people.

• A few years ago, I walked into a good friend’s house, a friend from growing up on Beulah. I saw the sign at right, it stopped me in my tracks, it quite literally gave me pause. I’m on my fifth house since first seeing it, and every one of them has displayed one of those signs.

There’s an incredible history here, woven around a shared love of a magical place; let us remember that, and be nice to each other.

From the Sailing CommodoreIf you ever been around friends, family or coworkers who do not sail, you likely stand out as the only person who cares more about whether there is wind than if it is cloudy, rainy, or cold. My wife shared that the worst thing on a signal boat is to postpone and watch boats bob in the water with no wind. We all saw plenty of that this year.

Thank you to all the PROs, chase and Signal boat teams for making this year possible! As we head into the winter months I will be sending out a questioner to the signal boat captains for feedback going into next year. Also, thank you to the trophy dinner committee for another outstanding night and dinner.

This year at the ILYA championship, I had a conversation with Olympian Luke Ramsey sailing the B-23. When I asked him what it takes to achieve such a high level of sailing, he said “Get out there and sail. Whether it is for a race or just sailing by yourself just spend time sailing.” We have sailors who take advantage of every opportunity to sail and the dividends have paid off. The 2018 C-fleet champion B- 1 skipper has sailed in countless boats and races and continues to travel to regattas. The 2018 MC-fleet champion can be seen on the water practicing when there is nice wind and traveling to many off lake regattas. I am so excited to see our sailors passing the love of sailing on to future generations. Labor Day weekend, the B-217 looked like a C-Scow-school bus with 5 kids ranging from ages 6 to 3 sailing with them in the race. I was able to sail a race with my daughter Hailey. While sailing the race she told

me she trusted me but was going to keep her eyes closed during the tacks. Not sure if that constitutes trust LOL.

The Championship series and Labor Day series have ended; however, there are still opportunities to sail into fall starting with the Dorn Memorial regatta, Beulah Challenge as well as many off lake regattas.

As we close out this year’s sailing and reflect, if you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know as I look forward to next year.

Be Safe, Be Smart, but get out and SAIL!

Mike Greeson

A beautiful night for the last Friday race of the season.

Socially SpeakingSummer goes by far too quickly...Chrissy did a great job as Social chair over the past few years - she should be thanked for the time and effort she put forth into making the cookouts, parties, etc. a great experience for the members. This was Chrissy’s second time at this board position, which is pretty impressive.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be contacting members regarding preferences for next year’s social assignments. Thank you to those who are well ahead of the game and already volunteered for next season. As reiterated so many times, this volunteer club works so well because there is passion for who we are as a group.

Andrea Lee, Glenn McMurray and crew once again put on a delightful trophy dinner catered by Toothpicks. It was a wonderful way to end this year’s social calendar. Congratulations to this year’s fleet winners, sailors and on the judges, Signal and Chase volunteers for another good year on the water.

Upcoming autumn events include the Dorn regatta (MC’s) and the NNN Challenge (C’s). Volunteers are always welcome and making a reservation for dinner encouraged. Check the Mainsheet for who to contact. The Sidestays have fun events scheduled for the fall. Be sure to read all about their upcoming events in the ‘Sidestays Corner’ section of the Mainsheet.

Brooke and Molly Brickler are planning a family Christmas Lunch on Sunday, December 9th and Mary Schmittendorf is planing the adult party scheduled on December 8th. As plans evolve, you’ll be updated but mark your calendars for some holiday cheer.

Please feel free to contact me with any creative ideas for the next social season. Enjoy the dog days of summer.

Was Steve just roasted or toasted? by: Julie Haeger

The Commodore’s Ball committee had a plethora or material to work with this year and saluting the commodore and all his accomplishments was thoroughly enjoyable.

Karin Hiller and Carol Klement greeted guests with ‘The Anchor Drop’ glass of champagne, Maggie Smith created the ‘Roasted or Toasted’ paddles and game, Nancy Roble had the decorations vision and the guys were so darn creative in their burgee presentations.

Steve and Kathy were presented with a stained glass burgee as the entertainment portion of the evening ended and the dancing commenced. Pat and Greg Thomas and Chris and Monty Mackey won the ‘most time spent on the dance floor’ title. The ‘fun sponge’ AKA, Julie Haeger, closed the bar at 12:15 and the commodore and commodorable left with sore feet and lots laughs under their belts.

Thanks for a celebrating with us Steve and Kathy’s commitment to LBYC.

New members the Uhens joined the Rotiers and Riedls at the Commodore’s Ball! THANK YOU STEVE & KATHY

House & Grounds Report by: Greg Thomas

Walworth County Water Inspection

The water sample taken by the Walworth County Public Health Department came back with a approved, safe reading. No further treatments or tests are required.

Wish List

As the Yacht Club Building approaches its twentieth anniversary, original equipment may need to be replaced as they approach their serviceable life. Future decisions will need to be made whether to continue with the preven-tative maintenance schedule or to replace equipment. This Wish List is a list of things that should be contemplated in the future but are not all targeted for 2018.

1. Replace dining room exterior doors with a commercial grade door and hardware. Doors are not closing properly because of light duty hardware which has led to the deterioration of the door itself. Refinish Building Main Entrance Doors.

2. Completion of Rip-rap at the seawall. 100 lineal feet from Community pier to South property line. Original estimate from Complete Piers and Lifts without the 40 foot crane gap in the rip rap was $14,500 for 127 feet of lineal rip rap. Est approx. $11,500

3. Hot air within the attic space is currently vented by natural convection using eave vents and a continuous ridge vent. We should reinforce this ventilation with a number of powered roof vents located high on the roof. These are typically a low profile, mushroom style hood with a fan. They would help keep the attic space cooler.

Ductwork from the air handling unit runs through the attic space to the ceiling diffusers that distribute cool or warm air. If the attic space is too warm, long ductwork runs become less efficient delivering cool air if the attic environment is hot.

4. Shingled roof will be approaching its life cycle. Will need annual inspection. This replacement will be necessary in 2025.

5. Add an additional Air Handling Unit that would heat and cool the kitchen independently of the dining room and surrounding spaces. The cooling demand of the kitchen is greater than other surrounding rooms and it needs its’ own system and thermostat.

6. Construct outbuilding for the tennis court tractor.

7. Replace building exterior and interior lighting with energy efficient LED light fixtures. This has been started on a partial basis as older lamps fail. Currently there are multiple lamp types used throughout the building which makes re-lamping a logistical nightmare. We would save energy and reduce the lighting heat load.

8. Replace existing Air Handling Units with Energy Efficient machines. New Machines will comply with Energy Code; replacement estimate received in 2018 was $15,000 for the larger unit that serves dining room/ kitchen. Smaller unit serves the bar, offices and toilets

9. Start a Kitchen/ Bar Equipment Replacement Program

Freezer

Cooler – Mold in Sailing School Room

Better insulate Slab

Range/ Oven

Under-counter Coolers at the Back Bar

Meet the Neudorff familyAnother young and active family is joining the yacht club - Lindey and Rick Neudorff, owners of Lindey’s on Beulah. The Neudorff’s two oldest children have been involved in Sailing School for two years now and just celebrated their first green fleet Opti wins. Way to go!!As parents, they have been so impressed with the role models of the instructors and the camaraderie of the youth sailors. The Neudorffs have also enjoyed the opportunity to meet additional Lake Beulah neighbors.Welcome to the yacht club.

Welcome to the Uhen family You have probably met this very enthusiastic couple at the yacht club this summer, either at a cookout, the Commodore’s party or on the tennis court.Mary Ann and Dan Uhen hail from Wheaton, Illinois and purchased a cottage on Beulah Heights Road last year. They were drawn to Lake Beulah because of their lifelong love of lake activities, both having been involved with sailing on Lake Michigan. They actually met at Marquette University and sailed with the sailing club there. They have five adult children who have done a variety of lake activities from the water ski shows on the Twin Lakes to crewing on the Mac.

We are thrilled to have them as a part of our LBYC community.
