Our Out of School and Holiday Clubphilosophy is all about a child’s need toplay. Play is a biological, psychologicaland social necessity and is fundamental
to the healthy development and wellbeing of individuals and communities.
At Shelf Out of School Club play is aprocess that is freely chosen, personallydirected and intrinsically motivated. Thatis, our children determine and control the
content and intent of their play, byfollowing their own instincts, ideas andinterests, in their own way for their ownreasons. Children lead the planning at
Shelf Out of School Club and they tell uswhat fun activities they would like to do,
which makes for some fun times!
Our Childcare Practitioners prime focus isto support and facilitate the play process.

Chairman’s Ramblings…Hi Everyone,How time passes on, it’s twelve months since I was writing my 2014 Ramblings. They say timepasses faster as you get older. Maybe it’s because we are asleep more? However, last year at thistime the Committee were wondering what affect various major events would have on ShelfGala. First weekend in July 2014 there was the World Cup Quarter Finals and although Englandwere not in the competition at that time it could still have an affect on the Gala. We were alsocompeting with Wimbledon with the Ladies’ Singles Final, Men’s Double Final and Ladies’Doubles Final on that day and finally to top it all the “Tour de France” was in North Yorkshireon the Saturday and in Calderdale on Sunday the 6th. What a wonderfully organised event andcredit due to Welcome to Yorkshire for bringing the event to our region. Many people musthave chosen that spectacle over Shelf Gala but in the end, coupled with good weather we had avery successful gala. Gate takings were slightly down but through prudent management andwatching our expenses made it a success. What about 2015, weather permitting we should have another great gala through the organisationof my great committee who work tirelessly at providing an event which Shelf can be proud of.One major change this years is the procession. Processions and parades have changed over thepast few years. Roads have got busier, processions are now getting to be mainly walking floatsand the cost of insurance and health and safety increase, Police no longer can guarantee toprovide traffic management for processions so we have to employ a traffic managementcompany at a pretty substantial cost to the gala funds. One may ask is it worth having aprocession. I think it is as it gets the community involved and adds a bit of colour to the mainroad in Shelf and brings people into the Gala. To these ends this year have started at “Interface”car park. Witt & Son now own the Interface complex and through their generosity have allowedus to use their car park. I have called it “Interface ” car park as most people in Shelf will know itas that until Witt & Son get fully established and known in Shelf. The procession then turns lefton Halifax Road and down Bridle Stile, about half a mile. It’s a lot shorter than we used to havebut changes in procession content makes is probably long enough – let’s see how it goes. This year in the arena we have for your entertainment music on stage provided by SELAHSOUNDS (see facing page), we have The IMPERIAL CRUSADERS, a local marching band, aKarate display by another local organisation SHOTOKAN KARATE and dance routines byPENNINE MOVERS. Something new for this year we are having DOG COMPETITIONSorganised by Vets4Pets (See page 53) and depending on interest a TUG-OF-WAR Competition,Outside the arena all the usual attractions: Tea Tent, Beer Tent, Fairground, Food outlets, Stalls,Football Competition, Painting Competition, Police display van and again this year BRIANLLEWELLYN’S PUNCH & JUDY – hopefully there is something for everyone. As Chairman of the 2015 Shelf Gala Committee I would like to thank the sponsors of this Gala:Coral Windows, Interface, Blackshaw Holdings, Robinsons Farm Shop, Witt & Sons. A bigthank you to all the advertisers in our programme who support us year after year. Please supportthese people and use the services they offer. I would like to thank the gala committee – withoutthese people the gala would not exist, to all the people who have helped us in any way to set upthis gala and very important, clear it all away for another year and leave Shelf Hall Park asthough no one had been there in the afternoon and finally to all you people who come throughthe gates and support us year after year because without you people there would be no use inhaving a gala. HAVE A GREAT DAY!TREVOR PRIESTLEY (Chairman, Shelf Gala Committee 2015)

The Three Ages of ShelfThe medieval, essentially farming age existed in the 17th and 18th centuries whereall lived off the land in scattered communities of perhaps three or four homes basedaround farm buildings. Some examples are High Bentley and Low Bentley, UpperBrackens and High Cross.
The second age was the industrial age starting in the late 18th century. Thepopulation escalated at an alarming rate and were housed in hundreds of one andtwo storey, very simple, stone houses and cottages. These houses can be seen allover Shelf usually in the vicinity of a derelict or working mill around Clough Mills.
The third age, the new age, the residential age. Many acres of Shelf farmland havebeen covered with concrete and Tarmac. New people have arrived to inject new lifeinto the village and changes, some great, some small, have been made within thevillage of Shelf.
Shelf is a pleasant place to live. It is due to the numerous volunteers within thecommunity that so many organisations abound within the village ranging fromchurch and youth to education through to the numerous sporting groups. Let’s hopethese continue well into the future.
Shelf is a walkers paradise just turn left or right and countryside abounds in alldirections. There are waterfalls, woods, meadows and valleys as lovely asanywhere. It is there for the taking. You only need to explore.
When you go exploring look out for:
1. The Stocks2. The Pinfold3. The Stone Chair4. The Stables of the Old Shelf Hall5. The Tower Buildings6. The site of the old Shelf Windmill7. High Bentley8. Grove Mills9. The Lion Gates
I hope this will interest you all and perhaps give you the visitors to our Gala a newinterest and feeling for the village.
Oh! By the way a famous footballer was born in Shelf and we also have a Lord ofthe Manor of Shelf. Both living and breathing?!
Happy Hunting! Maybe we could have a quiz next Gala Day - With a prize ofcourse!

5 Cooperative Parade, Denholme Gate Road, Hipperholme, Halifax, West Yorkshire HX3 8LTRegulated by The Council for Licensed Conveyancers
Q. I’ve had an offer accepted to buy a property, what do I do now?
A. Now’s the time to instruct a Property
Lawyer or Solicitor. Call us for a free, no
obligation quote! We will guide you through
the process over the phone and with a
leaflet and we’ll keep you updated.
Q. How long does the process take from an offer being accepted to moving house?
A. If you are getting a mortgage, the average
time is 6 to 8 weeks.
Q. What is the advantage of using a Property Lawyer as a Licensed Conveyancer instead of a Solicitor?
A. A Solicitor practices in all areas of law.
A Property Lawyer and Conveyancer
specialise in property law.
Q. My neighbour believes my fence is on his land, can you help?
A. Yes, we can advise on the title and
who owns or is responsible for which
boundaries.
Q. I would like to save money and do my own conveyancing when I buy a house, can I do it myself?
A. Yes you can, however, a Conveyancer or
Solicitor would be required to act on
behalf of your mortgage lender. The
Conveyancer’s costs would probably
amount to the same as if you instructed
the Conveyancer to carry out all of the
work though.
Moving home?Think Valerie Holmes!Shelf resident Valerie Holmes is a Property Lawyer with an office
in Hipperholme next to the Coop. A Property Lawyer specialises
in Property and Land and is here to help you when you buy,
sell, transfer or lease a property, or have any concerns over
boundaries. We also deal with the legal aspect of re-mortgaging
too. Here Valerie answers some commonly raised questions.
