Fort Sumner Park - North Street Summer Concert Series Maine Marimba is a fantastically unique percussion band based in Portland, Maine. They not only play Marimbas, but they make them! Marimbas are large wooden xylophone- like instruments and the ones you’re listening to tonight are hand-made by Jacob Wolff using a variety of woods. Their tunes bring to light the Shona culture of Zimbabwe, hundreds of years old, filling today’s listeners with joy. The members are Kevin Caron, Rob Cimitile, Jacob Wolff, Elliot Heeschen, Pete Himmer, Zebulon Kelley, Chris Fletcher, and Matt Wasowski. With roots this deep and instruments this personal, you better believe this will be a musical experience unlike any other. The ensemble incorporates great rhythms, inspiring foot-tapping, hip- swaying and energetic dancing. The way that these gentlemen intertwine each note with the surrounding strikes is truly captivating. The complex polyrhythms blend so well that they become one movement through a traditional African experience. Get up and move with this Maine- based band on a round-trip journey through Zimbabwe, all while hanging out at Fort Sumner Park! Go to MaineMarimbaEnsemble.com and learn more about these cool cats.
