Thunderbird Sailing Club Norman, Oklahoma
Happy summer everyone!
What a busy month! TSC
volunteers are the backbone
of our club, and we especial-
ly appreciate them all as June
activities descended.
The RS Teras and Zests ar-
rived. Thanks to Phil for tactful-
ly shepherding the boats from England to Nor-
man and to all of the volunteers who helped
unload and put them together. They have been
put to the test in youth sailing classes for two
weeks in June. By all accounts, the kids and
instructors love the boats. Again, thanks to Jerry
Lojka, Phil Moershel, Jim Waller, Jim Chap-
man, Gray Graham, Paul Reynolds, Frederica
Cottrel, Mary Ann Secrist, David Gray, Devon,
and others, not to mention the awesome food
provided by David and Joyce Craigie!
Sailing class instructors and volunteers
were very well fed! These classes provide a
wonderful opportunity for youth to learn sailing
skills, engage in physical activity, become com-
fortable around the water, and make new
friends. These classes are top notch and we are
lucky to have so many skilled volunteers to
manage these classes (and the children).
July 2019
Cmdre. Lorrie
These new boats were christened at a lovely ceremony just prior at the start of our potluck on June 17.
Thanks so much to Jim Eller for officiating at this event. New boat names were unveiled, and the boats
were duly doused with fizzy water. Thanks to all those who donated to make the new fleet a reality.
June is bursting out all over
AUGUST 17: RECEPTION 6:30-9:00 Celebrate 50 years of sailing fun, education, racing, and fellowship. Seeking volunteers to provide appetizers/finger foods. Cakes already in the works!

Nothing says summer to a sailor more than Jimmy Buffett. And nothing says Jimmy Buf-fett more than "Cheeseburgers in Paradise"!
Join us for this month's program featuring our annual Cheeseburgers in Paradise party, complete with a build-your-own cheeseburger including
"lettuce and tomatoes, Heinz 57 and French-fried potatoes" and lots more. Hamburgers provided by TSC. And don't forget the live band playing Jim-
my Buffett, blues and lots of everything else that's fun to listen to in the summer. Don't miss this opportunity to join in on the fun. Be sure to bring a
lawn chair and sit out in the shade and enjoy your burger and some Buffett. Now THAT sounds like summer!
Looking ahead to future programs:
AUGUST: 50th TSC Anniversary Celebration!; Boats/Blues and BBQ in September; Sailing Knot Bee in October. November meeting program is pending (Have an idea? Let Jim
Madsen know!) Of course, our holiday party is in December.
Contact Lorrie if you are interested in getting
more involved in any of the activities and
events listed above, or if you are interested in
learning about one of the positions on our TSC
Board for next year!
Sailing School
Tuesday June 25: 12 graduates of the beginner course had a
good first day in the Intermediate class. We tackled sailing to
weather, pushing to get the sailors out on the edge to balance the
boat, and into the groove to move fast upwind. Winds were per-
fect, 8-12 mph. The wind will build tomorrow and the plan is to
to sail double handed with Zests and Americans, all the way to
Little Axe Cove, then reach back in gusts to 20. We'll also con-
tinue to address racing, and introduce the start sequence tomor-
row.
This kind of fun and learning on a muddy reservoir in the
heart of the prairie would never happen without the generous
support of donors and volunteers like YOU. The new RS Teras
and Zests are great; smooth and easy to sail, and quick to rig. I
want to thank in particular Phil Moershel for the hours and
months of hair-pulling persistence to bring these boats to our
beach.
Running a class takes a village - and having a superlative and
free lunch ready for the volunteers is real treat .... THANK YOU
DAVE AND JOYCE CRAIGIE !!! As many of you know
they've had more than their share of health challenges and adjust-
ments lately, but instead of tuning out and dropping off, their
commitment to others has only deepened. Thanks again Dave and
Joyce.
Here is the rest of the village for this class alone: Paul, Phil,
Les, Jim W, Christian, Mary Anne, Jim C, Gavin Campbell,
Brenda & Jim S. (Christian has been a hardworking volunteer at
every camp so far, and drives up from Duncan each morning).
Thank you, Paul

Thunderbird Sailing Club has a Shared Boat program. For a few
more dollars than our basic membership, you get access to a sailboat in
good to excellent condition. We launched this program with Shamrock,
an O’Day 24, and have members who are a part of the Shamrocker
Team. We have one Shamrock spot that has become available if you are
interested, contact Jim Eller, [email protected] or 405-924-3148.
Adding a Third Boat Soon
We are taking names for a third shared boat. We have purchased a
Precision 23 for our next shared boat and are looking for a few more to
fill our team. We have a list of eight who people who have expressed
strong interest. Shared Boat teams are limited to ten members. If want
to join this team email or call, Jim Eller at [email protected] or call
405-310-3556
This is an Inexpensive way to enter a wonderful sport. Join now
while there is still room. No slip fee, no purchase required. Just a year
by year commitment.

I had the pleasure of taking my two sisters, Paula Cottrell and Donna Archer, to the June monthly meeting. Both sisters had a
great time and commented about what a great group of people I hang out with. They enjoyed the music the food and friendly peo-
ple.

Delinquent Membership Renewals
It is never too late to renew your membership. Sadly, I still have
several members who have not renewed their memberships for the
current year. This makes it difficult to keep our budget goals and
it makes my volunteer job harder having to personally remind
you. If you have not taken care of the current year’s renewal,
please do so now. We really need you and we desperately need
your financial support. Please.
If you have any questions about your membership, please contact
me. Thanks.

sport of sailing across the United States. So, folks from out of town may be contacting us about going for a sail for $50 each. Proceeds from the program will go toward up-
