    September

As someone says, “The sailing season is just beginning!” Fall is definitely the best time to sail Thunderbird. Once school starts we have the lake to ourselves, but TSC doesn’t slow down at all! We have CAST, Mini-Water Fest, The Layton Regatta, Messabout, and The Hiram Regatta yet to go, so lots more opportunities to get together at the lake. For the August meeting, one of the five new Little River Marina owners, Brian Stambeck and manager, Brenda Woods, talked about the marina as one component of a larger property manage-ment and storage facility business. They anticipate additional im-provements. The new night lighting on the walkway is certainly appreciated. They will be having a customer appreciation night on Saturday, September 2nd. TSC members have many off the water talents. The live Blues and Bar-B-Que was a real treat. Thanks to the Rear Commodore Jim and First Mate Judy Chapman for delicious food. Special thanks to Jim Madsen and his friends for fine lake side music. As we move into the fourth quarter of the year, the TSC board turns attention to some of the annual duties. The Nominating committee is making good progress. The Bylaws are being re-viewed. They are located on the TSC website under the member-ship page. If you see anything that needs changing, please let me know. Look for reports of these committees in the November Main Sheet. Sadly, Sea Scout Ship 5790 and TSC are parting ways. Effective September 1st, TSC is withdrawing as the chartering organization for the Ship. We wish all the best to Rick Shaw and the Ship. On behalf of TSC I would like to thank Robert Eades of the BSA and Terry Gibson, the new Ship sponsor, for a smooth transition. You won’t want to miss the Moershal Mexican Cantina at the Sat-urday, September 16th club meeting. Wishing all of you a relaxing and safe Labor Day Weekend. Mary Anne Secrist, TSC Commodore

  • 16th Annual CAST for Kids Fishing Derby

On Saturday, September 9, 2017 the Lake Thunderbird BoatHouse will host the

16th CAST for Kids Fishing Derby for children with disabilities. Partnering with the

U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, CAST for Kids Foundation and the Oklahoma Department

of Tourism and Recreation, the LTEF and TSC supports this project each year.

The event kicks off with delivery and setup of the 30’x50’ tent on Friday rented

from Crossland’s Party World. The tent provides shade and protection for the children,

parents, siblings and volunteers during the luncheon on Saturday that is provided to eve-

ryone when the fishermen and kids return around noon. Food and other deliveries are

made during the day on Friday.

The fishing event kicks off early Saturday around 7am to prepare for the arrival

and registration of the kids at 8am. Breakfast items are served and when the kids go out

fishing at 9am the food crew starts preparing lunch to be ready when they return at

noon. Each child gets a hat, t-shirt, new rod/reel, tackle box with tackle, bait and a PFD

to wear while on the fishing boat. After the luncheon, headed up by TSC and Elks Lodge

member Roger Elliott, each child is presented a plaque with a photo of them taken with

their fishing guide aboard their boat. They also have their choice of three tables full of

prizes. This is not a contest, but a pleasant day on the lake fishing with an experienced

    fishing guide.

We can always use more fishermen to come out to take the kids fishing especially

those with pontoon boats for the children in wheelchairs. Please come out and lend a

    hand setting up, registering,

    preparing food and serving

and also we need lots of

help to clean up starting at

    1PM. Every- thing

    should be com- pleted by

    2PM! Please lend a

    hand!

  • TSC Potluck and Program September 16, 2017

Meeting Theme: 6:00 PM A Taste of Mexico. Phil Moershel will host this months’ meeting. You can expect to be tanta-lized by some of the best Mexican Cuisine in Central Oklahoma. “No Pressure Phil” will make sure of that and who knows a Mariachi Band may show up. For inspiration Judy and I had Sunday Lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant “Tarahumara’s” on Porter in Norman, pictured above. The chips and salsas are the best along with enchiladas your way. We always get avocado but beef or chicken plus many others are available. Potluck: 6:30 PM The meal will be up to Phil to decide but we expect to see an array of fine Mexican dishes. Knowing Phil, he will be a “Host - Hard to Follow” because he puts so much into all that he does. Thank You Phil in advance for hosting the September Membership Meeting. As usual, the club will provide beverages, utensils, plates/bowls, etc... Alphabetical listing: a-g: main dish h-M: veggies (hot and cold) n-s: appetizers/fruit t-z: desserts/breads/nuts

Progam 7:00 PM Karen Thurston A Pirate Looks at 40 (well, 46, but who's counting)" Karen Thurston has raced on many different boats: Corsair 27R trimaran, Etchells, International 20, Hobie 20, Hobie 16, Nacra 5.8, J24, J22, Catali-na 27, Catalina 25, Soling, IC 24, S2, Mirage, Beneteau 25 Platu, Laser, Laser II, Sunfish, and others. With all these different boats come different tales--some funny, some scary, but looking back, always entertaining. Karen looks forward to sharing a few with her pirate friends under and over 40!

  • The 23rd Annual Jerry Layton Regatta will be held Sunday, October 8th. The event will begin with a skipper's meeting at 10:15AM. Races will start at 11 AM. Our usual format is to enlist five Catalina 22s, five experienced TSC skippers and 15 crew members. Crew members need not be experienced or be TSC members. This format gives new sailors a chance to try racing. The Race Committee will assign crew and the order of boats to be sailed. Each skipper races on each of the five boats until everyone has competed on each of the sailboats. The crew stays with the boat for all of the races. This is a fund raiser to help support and maintain our Race Committee boat. Skippers contribute $25 for the regatta and each crew member contributes $15. * We need five skippers and preferably ones that have not won this regatta before. * We need 15 crew members. No experience needed. * We need volunteers for the Committee boat and for the two safety boats used to transfer skippers from boat to boat. * Racing should be finished by around 2 PM. The Layton Regatta is offered in memory of Jerry Layton, former TSC Commodore. All income goes to support our pontoon boat, the Jerry L. Come join in this 20 year tradi-tion. It is one of the really fun events of our sailing year. For more information or to sign up, email Jim Eller at [email protected] or call Jim at 405-924-3148 or contact Les Cummings at [email protected]

yourself for a position, or to nominate someone else! We’ll do the arm-twisting, I mean enticement, if you

give us a name. Of course, you can contact any board member, in addition to the above three if you think

you, or someone else in the club would like to serve in some capacity next year. If you have interest in serv-

combinations and boat house locks on Sept. 1.

captain next year and keep regatta leads/PRO as they have been with other members. Watch for weekly texts

for these fun races. Come join a boat or bring your own!

  • This hitch draws up without having to work the hitch

snug to form a stable, secure hitch that will not jam. It

may be used as a way to tie a smaller rope to a very large

rope. The smaller rope should pull left when tied as

    shown here.

The Sailor's Hitch, appropriately enough, can also serve as an efficient cleat hitch.

As just an interesting exercise, you might try tying this

hitch (and the next) as a loop knot and see what hap-

pens. Just loop around the rope and hitch the rope to it-

self. The loop would form to the left when tied as shown

    here

Leukemia Cup Regatta: The date is set for this two-day event – June 2 and 3, 2018. Mary Anne stepped up to

coordinate this event. We will be contacting folks at the LLS to get the ball rolling soon. We hope to have a

full 2-days of racing, as well as our Silent Auction. It is not too early to find those special auction items. We

hope to have online auction as well – so if anyone has skills in the online auction realm, please contact Lorrie

    ([email protected]).

Layton Regatta: October 8 – Jim Eller is PRO. We may be having Catalinas instead of San Juans. Looking for

skippers. Jim E. will have more information at September meeting. Fee: $25 for skippers and crew is $15.

Hiram Douglas: November 5 – Phil will be PRO and Hiram Race Committee Chair.

Other Business: Fall Water Fest (OKASA) will be held Sept. 30 from 9-3:00. This is a first for the fall water fest

    – folks attending the spring event have asked for a second fall event – and we now have it! Contact Paul or

    Lorrie for more information.

Annual Awards: Be thinking of your crew, racing buddies and events for the annual awards to be given at our

December meeting! These include: Most improved sailor, SNAFU Award, sportsmanship, Best Crew. Give

suggestions to Mary Anne or any board member.

ByLaws: The board will be doing a bylaws review – take a peek and if you have suggestions please send to

Mary Anne in advance of our Sept. Meeting.

Concern for members: Welcome new member Regan Anderson! Please be thinking of Phil Dame as he re-

covers from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident. Keep Phil Deberry in your prayers as he moves through

his cancer treatments. Let Lorrie know of members who are ill or struggling – we want to keep them in our

    thoughts. Thanks!!

This hitch is a modification of the Sailor's Hitch that allows a lengthwise pull on a smooth spar, even if tapered. This hitch outperforms the Icicle Hitch in this regard. Ensure that the hitch is tight before applying the lengthwise pull. This hitch works best if the pull is steady. You can increase the grip by placing rubber under the hitch to increase the coefficient of friction.

  • Leukemia Cup RegattaThe Club received a lovely thank you not from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

expressing their appreciation for the donation. The club raised $1,745 to help toward the developing cures

and better treatments for people with blood cancers. It’s not too early to start thinking about making our

    donation larger next year.

September Hi All, I hope this last summer has been filled with good sailing and good company for all of you. For those that are not aware of our club, the OSU sailing club offers sailing and boating opportunities to both the OSU student body as well as the Stillwater community. We have seen signifi-cant growth over the past few years thanks to some good leadership, school support, and community involve-ment. As part of our growth we have outgrown our current fleet of Vanguard 420’s. We currently have five working boats but their current condition means that they will not be around much longer. To replace our fleet we have decid-ed to hold a large fundraiser. We hope to buy and re-ceive a newer fleet of six 420s within a year. These boats will help the OSU sailing team be more competi-tive within the SEISA conference, enable more opportu-nities to spread sailing through the school, and provide community members with a fun, exciting activity to enjoy with their families. We have budgeted out our needs and come to $21,000 to replace our aging fleet. Most of this money will go to the purchase of boats, some will go towards shipping them to our lake house, and the remainder will be allo-cated for future upkeep. We have approved a tier system to recognize outstand-ing donations. For details please e-mail [email protected] Please consider donating and spreading the word about our club. We will do our best to make the most of your donation.
