• Turning point in the Pacific war!

• Fighting for control of island took a long time and was very difficult.

• American’s finally won!

death.• Island encompasses 8

• Only 212 Japanese taken prisoner out of 22,000.

Pacific Campaign – Battle of Okinawa

• Japanese ordered to hold island at any cost

• Kamikaze – suicide pilots – used a lot

• American’s: 7,300+ died, 32,000+ wounded.

• Japanese: 107,000 died, 7,400 prisoner
