Major Rock Groups

Igneous Sedimentary Metamorphic

Rocks are melted due to extreme heat creating magma. New rocks are formed when magma cools down.

Rocks form at Earth’s surface when other pieces of rocks, plants and animal material, and dissolved minerals are compressed together.

Rocks formed when exposed to high heat and pressure causing physical and chemical changes to the rock.

• Extrusive rocks form from cooling quickly on Earth’s surface

•Intrusive rocks form from cooling slowly under the Earth’s crust

• Broken Rocks

•Chemical Rocks

•Organic Rocks

• Foliated

•Non-foliated

• Three major rock groups.

• It is powered by the interior heat of the Earth

• Affected by energy from the sun

• It involves processes on the Earth’s surface as well as the Earth’s interior

• It connects the “water cycle” & with the “tectonic cycle”

In Conclusion…
