Germany and Russia• Germany eventually declared
war on France and Belgium• Soon after, Great Britain and
Italy joined and declared war on Germany (they were allies with Russia)• American’s wanted to stay
neutral in order to keep peace and insure trade

trench warfare and eventually introduced unrestricted submarine warfare• The German’s sunk a United
States neutral ship- This is why the U.S. entered the war

Who and What?• The Civil War was fought between
the United States and the Confederate States of America• 11 states seceded from the Union
and they called themselves “The Confederate States of America”

When and Where?• The Civil War took place in the
United States between the slave states (Confederates) and free states (Union)• It started on April 12,1861 in
Charleston, South Carolina with the Battle of Fort Sumter• General Lee (Confederates)
surrendered to General Grant on April 9, 1865 at the Appomattox courthouse

Why? • Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860 and the southern slave states were outraged because he had anti-slavery views• Suddenly slave states were seceding
from the union• The U.S. kept their troops stationed at
Fort Sumter, which was within confederate territory• When the U.S. refused to remove their
