Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all.”

There are many ways to make a difference in this world. We can be a bad influence or a good influence. We can make someone happy or sad, depending on how we treat him or her. November is a Time to be Thankful – so reads a headline in Sunday’s paper. Not only in November, but gratitude at Lucille Raines Residence is timeless. Through the caring and sharing of United Methodist Women, United Methodist churches and other concerned folk, men and women find the missing ingredient in returning to wholeness. And so, thank you, for being Supportive Community!

Even in adversity, be thankful! Adversity struck during the wee morning hours October 28. My Facebook post the following day: Challenge! Opportunity! Frustration! All apply to Lucille Raines Residence. Very early yesterday morning a pipe burst in the wall between 3rd & 4th floors. Several resident rooms are damaged. 101, the conference room, is the worst, with portion of ceiling having fallen, etc. Residents have been wonderfully helpful & understanding. Fortunately, those in rooms uninhabitable, were able to be relocated. In the midst of it all, ministry continues. Thank you, God!

Would that it was possible to give a firm estimate of the damage. Everything is in guesstimate stage! In the midst of it all, resolve to deal with each stumbling block is resolute. (It’ll not be cheap!) Insurance is involved with restoring the damage to rooms. However, pipe replacement is our responsibility. The plumbing contractor shares, “Due to the many lineal feet of piping from the basement to the upper floors, this could be a minor repair or a major undertaking. The age of the piping creates a challenge as many of the fittings may not cooperate once we begin to remove the damaged material.”

On the down side, also, is the fact that, while all this is in limbo, six rooms are “down”. That means folks in recovery, who desperately want – and need – to be at LRR cannot be. Need for funds for this “unexpected opportunity” is great. Your prayers, too, are deeply appreciated. With God, all things are possible!

Carolyn Marshall, Executive Director

With God, all things are possible!

Grateful To Be AT Raines

My name is Angela Smith and I am an addict. My clean date is April 6, 2014. I am 33 years old and have two children. I have a very supportive family and a wonderful sponsor. I have obtained a big network of recovering addicts in the Narcotics Anonymous program. I have lived at Lucille Raines for 17 months. I came to Raines after completing a program at Dove Recovery House for Women. Living here has afforded me the opportunity to learn what independent means. An addict like me needs somewhat of a structured environment to help maintain my sobriety. Having meetings here and other recovering addicts close by has a huge impact on my daily living routine. Help is always available by having staff 24 hours a day. I have formed very close relationships with many of the residents and staff. I am grateful that Mariea saw fit for me to make this my home. I had outgrown the recovery house I was at due to shared rooms and bathrooms. Having my privacy, a place to call my own, is very important to me. My children and family are welcome here, so it really feels like home. Ms.

Carolyn and the Board of Directors do an amazing job. I have never in my life received so many birthday and Christmas cards. It makes me feel very much loved. I remember a time I didn’t feel loved at all. The horrors of addiction had taken me down to such a low point in life, where at times I didn’t feel very much loved. Today life is worth fighting hard to live. I moved in right before the Raines Fest. I was in for a surprise that was such a special moment in my life, to meet everyone and, for once, to have fun in recovery. Every day, thereafter, I have managed to make my recovery fun. I can’t express enough gratitude to Lucille Raines for my new way of life. I am now working on getting joint custody of my children, which is something I couldn’t have imagined 17 months ago. I will forever be indebted to this facility and hope one day I can give back and help someone else find a new found life. Once again, thanks to all staff, board members, residents and the people in the community who donate to keep this place up and running. I am Angela and I am a very grateful recovering addict.

Lucinda pins are making the rounds. By the time you read this newsletter, they will have been to the Christmas Gift and Hobby Show in Indianapolis. I hope you are all aware that the pins have been joined by Christmas tree ornaments that sell for $10. These make great stocking stuffers or gift exchange items.

I believe that one of my sister board members said it best when Lucia commented that wearing a Lucinda pin is a great conversation starter. Make a New Years Resolution to wear a Lucinda pin as often as possible and help spread the word.

We have building pins for sale. What better way to celebrate our 40th Anniversary in 2017 than by showing your pride and wearing a pin. Trust me, people will ask. Be ready with an answer!

Lucinda Pins

What have YOU done for Lucille Raines Residence lately? That’s a question often asked of the board members to give them the opportunity to share what their unit or district is doing for Raines. It’s in that sharing that we get ideas and inspiration.

United Methodist Women local units all over Indiana are thinking inside and outside the box to raise funds for Lucille Raines Residence. One example is Cornerstone UMW in Chrisney, Indiana. Cornerstone UMW members purposed to raise $500

for Lucille Raines Residence by the end of 2016. They met that goal with donations and the sale of hand-made crafts. Let us know what your unit is doing!

THANK YOU for keeping Raines in your thoughts and prayers and for your continued support of the residence. You are making a difference!

Wow! It’s Fall here in North Indiana – leaves are on the ground, getting garden cleared and tilled and limed for the winter cold and snow, to prepare for the promise of Spring, the green grass, crocuses, tulips, daffodils …….. as I write my letter for our Lucille Raines Residence newsletter I am experiencing wonder, excitement, dreams, memories of seasons and times past, of people who have shaped or informed my life in a way that leaves me today the woman that I am becoming. I also am in the Fall of my life – still, there is a sense of urgency and sense of joy that NOW is the day to be seized, NOW is the time to let go and to let God have his way with me.

My life is quite different in many ways from the life my husband and I worked for and dreamed for all those many years ago. We are not doing the things we had once thought we would in our growing old together, but our lives have been taken to a different way of doing and going and growing – you know what? It’s okay – God has this and he has us – all of

us – in the palm of his hand, in the cleft of the rock.

I was extremely blessed with my experience of Raines Fest, with my sisters of the LRR Board, as we “took over” for a few days to provide our staff a reprieve from their duties and for each of us to get to know our beloved residents better, to share with them food from our homes, crafts, conversations, earning funny money from Bingo games, a “country store”, a wild and crazy auction and the bidding that was in a word, Supercalifragilisticexpealadocious!!!! Wowsers!!! The love, hospitality and grace of our residents was awesome, and I am in tears of the stories and aching of heart because I am so unworthy, but - you know what? It’s okay – God has this and he has us – all of us – in the palm of his hand, in the cleft of the rock.

Raines Rejoices Fall 2016 Page 5

It doesn’t seem possible that I am completing my sixth year on the Lucille Raines Residence Board! I served as West District Representative for two years and Vice President for four years.

That means the joy of six Staff Appreciation celebrations when we show our staff how much we appreciate them with lunch, a special theme and decorations and a small gift. Raines Fest is just plain fun. There is no other way to describe it. We have the opportunity to spend time with the residents playing games, listening to their stories, laughing with them during the Crazy Auction, eating (UMW always have food) and their delight at purchasing items from the Country Store to mention a few special times with our residents. Of course, Raines Fest also means that we do some of the jobs that our staff does every day – vacuuming, emptying trash cans, staffing the desk 24/7 plus anything else that needs to be done. (See 2016 Raines Fest pictures.)

Serving on the Raines Board has been a blessing beyond my wildest imagination. Raines is truly a place where we can be God’s hands and feet and you don’t need a passport! When the residents say “THANK YOU” it isn’t just for my service on the board but to all the United Methodist Women and United Methodist Churches in Indiana that help support the ministry of Raines – “Rebuilding Lives – Committed to Addiction Recovery”.

Please continue to keep Raines in your prayers and support Raines monetarily as you are making a difference in the world – one Raines resident at a time!

Hugs!

Quarter Financial Position

The Raines’ Board of Directors took a “leap of faith” for 2016 and budgeted to provide $108,000 toward

the Operating Budget of Lucille Raines Residence, Inc.—an increase of $500 per month. The graphic

above compares giving by members of UMW of Indiana during the first nine months of 2016 to the same

period in 2015. UMW Regular Giving (Conference Asking of $10 per member, per year) in 2016 is

approximately $5,000 less than the amount for 2015 and about 65% of the anticipated amount for three

quarters. Additionally, UMW Special Giving for the first three quarters of 2016 is about $1,000 less than

the amount for 2015. Good news—other donated funds are about $1,000 more at this time in 2016 as

compared to 2015, and the sale of Lucinda Pins & Ornaments generated about $5,000 in net profit thru the

3rd quarter of 2016 & 2015. As to expenditures for Programming & Operations, the Board has disbursed

$81,000 through the third quarter of 2016—100% of the year-to-date budget. An additional $5,000 has

been disbursed to assist Lucille Raines Residence, Inc. with replacing the air conditioner coil.

Current financial needs are funds to repair and refurbish several rooms water-damaged in a recent flood

caused by another broken water pipe. Then there is always the day-to-day operating costs—wages &

salaries, utilities, insurance, repairs & maintenance, etc. Just like money is needed to live—raise a family

and maintain a home—operating funds are a huge need at the Raines. Ministry is alive at the Raines—

lives are changed and hope given!!! So, as 2016 comes to a close and your local UMW organization

empties its treasury, please consider sending a special gift to LRR through your district treasurer! A

designation of “Use As Needed” is appreciated!!! The Raines’ residents, staff & Board greatly appreciate

your continued faithful and generous giving to UMW of Indiana’s mission institution!

P.S. “Thank you!” to Northeast District and East District local organizations for sending your Christmas

gift for your residents to the district treasurer - funds were sent to Carolyn Marshall, Executive Director

of Lucille Raines Residence, by October 31.
