Some bats are small enough to fit into a matchbox, so this box makes a perfect roost. A plank of wood cut into four different lengths Thin strips of wood between 15 and 25 cm thick (and no thicker) Nails Wire 1 Cut two thin strips of wood the length of the second longest piece of plank. Put them at the top of the big plank on either side. Place the second plank on top and nail in place. 2 Cut two strips the length of the third longest plank. Put them at the top of the second plank on either side. Place the third plank on top and nail in place. 3 Nail the smallest piece of plank on top to make a roof. 4 Bang two big nails into the bat box as shown in the picture. Use wire to attach it to a tree or building. 5 Try to find a sheltered spot with a clear flightpath in front. Thanks to the Bat Conservation Trust for this design.

Make a bat boxWhile you get a bed for the night, bats need somewhere to tuck up for the day. Some bats are small enough to fit into a matchbox, so this box makes a perfect roost.

• A plank of wood cut into four different lengths

• Thin strips of wood between 15 and 25 cm thick (and no thicker)

• Wire

1 Cut two thin strips of wood the length of the second longest piece of plank. Put them at the top of the big plank on either side. Place the second plank on top and nail in place.
