MEDITATION August 1, 2021

The Eighteenth Sunday In Ordinary Time Would that we had died at the Lord’s hand in the land of

Egypt, as we . . . ate our fill of bread! (Exodus 16:3) As the old saying goes, “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” It’s better to have a sure thing than to hope for something better that’s not guaranteed. That seems to capture the Israelites’ complaint to Moses. They would rather be enslaved in Egypt and have enough to eat than trust God to lead them to the Promised Land. After all, they are hungry! It might seem shortsighted. God had just freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. He parted the Red Sea for them to pass through and provided water in the desert. Why didn’t they trust him to take care of them? Why were their sights set so low, on such immediate needs? The short answer is, it’s human nature. The needs that loom before us can make us forget God’s faithfulness. It’s like the crowd following Jesus in today’s Gospel: they searched for him, not because they had seen healings and miracles, but because he had filled their bellies (John 6:26). Even when Jesus told them that he was the “bread of God,” the One who came down from heaven to give life to the world, they still seemed preoccupied with physical food (6:33). It can be hard to trust that in the long term, God will bring good out of a hard situation when all we want is relief. It can be a challenge to remember his promises when all we can see is what we’re lacking. We need a sign of God’s faithfulness, a reminder that he takes care of us. The Eucharist is that reminder. Day after day, Jesus offers himself: the Bread come down from heaven. So today, when you receive Communion, place those pressing needs before the Lord. Receive him and know that he has you in the palm of his hand. “Lord Jesus, you are the Bread of Life. Help me hunger for the

food that endures.” Used with permission from The Word Among Us

FEATURED ON THE COVER: Detail of the High Altar: St. Louis carries the Crown of Thorns through the streets of Paris and the sculpture of St. Louis that hangs in the back of the main church. The carving of the model in clay was actually worked on by the artist from Conrad Schmitt Studios at the 150th Celebration Dinner in November 2018. Numerous celebratory events in August. Thank St. Pierre-Julien Eymard (4 Feb. 1811 – 1 Aug. 1868) for the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Julian Eymard was a diocesan priest who later became a Marist, and would become Marist Provincial of Lyons. One of Eymard’s novices was the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. He recognized Rodin's talent and advised him to return to his vocation. Also as provincial, he welcomed into the Third Order of Mary no less than John Vianney (feast August 4). The plaque in the St. Dorothy Portico next to St. John Vianney’s statue relates some interesting data. (hint Fr. Charles J. Willis, S.M., Pastor (1969-1975) at St. Jude of the Lake and Associate (1975-78) when he went to St. Mary of the Lake.) August 4, 2021 is the 135th Anniversary of Archbishop John Ireland’s entrusting the parish to the Society of Mary. “During Advent, 1885, Fr. Le Menant des Chesnais, S.M. preached a mission in St. Louis Church. Fr. D. Genis, pastor of the church, offered his parish to the Society of Mary, through the interposition of the preacher. Archbishop Ireland, knowing the Marists from the days of his studies for the priesthood, was desirous to entrust the parish to the Marist Fathers permanently. Father Chesnais communicated this information to Fr. John Leterrier, S.M., vice provincial of England, Ireland and America, who then was in residence at Boston. The matter was referred to the Very Reverend Julian Favre, Superior General of the Society, and after a number of conferences, the contract was signed at St. Paul August 4, 1886 between Archbishop Ireland and Father Leterrier. The Marist Fathers had acquired another parish!” (from The Three Corners of God.)
