Introduction On the 9th November 2018 Members of the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) will come together to debate and decide at the UKYP House of Commons sitting the most important issues to campaign on for the year ahead. The sitting will mark the launch of Parliament Week. The issues they will debate were decided upon via the ‘Make Your Mark’ public vote for 11 to 18 year olds across the United Kingdom based on a shortlist of topics voted upon by Members of the Youth Parliament from their manifesto.

This report details the results of ‘Make Your Mark’ campaign. The UK Youth Parliament is managed by the British Youth Council, a youth-led charity which aims to empower young people across the UK to have a say and be heard.

Note FINAL NUMBERS: Whilst every effort is made to verify the accuracy of voting returns at the time of going to print, there are some late returns and unallocated votes that have not been recorded in this first edition of the report.

The five issues to be debatedThe Make Your Mark ballot orders the ten issues; those that go forward to be debated are the top 2 UK wide and the top 3 devolved issues. This is due to the devolved nature of the UK democracy and to ensure relevant representation of the issues from the all nations.

1. Put an end to Knife crime – Devolved Too many young people’s lives are lost to knife crime; the Government need to do more to help end the knife crime epidemic.

2. Mental Health – Devolved Mental health services should be improved with young people’s help; and should be available in schools.

3. Equal Pay for Equal work – UK* Give young people the same amount of pay, if they are doing the same work as adults in the same job.

4. Let’s tackle Homelessness – Devolved Every person should have a place to live and the opportunity to live comfortably. Let’s make it happen and put a stop to homelessness.

5. Votes at 16 – UK Give 16 and 17 year olds the right to vote in all elections/referendums.

*At the launch of the campaign we believed that ‘Equal Pay for Equal work’ was a devolved issue. We’re happy to correct that it is a UK issue.

3

Turnout is based on population estimates provided

by the Office of the National Statistics, specifically the

2011 Census. Which we believe to be the fairest way of

estimating the youth population, as it applies the same

methodology across the whole of the UK. Please note the

11-18 year old population is liable to change.

Top Make Your Mark Champions

We would like to recognise and celebrate the achievements of those young people who helped give a voice to 1,000 or more young people.

For an up to date list, please visit the 2018 section of www.ukyouthparliament.org.uk/makeyourmark

With special thanks to the schools, colleges and youth groups who support the young people they work with to take part. As well as our partner organization, members in Local Authorities, and young volun-teers. Without whose support this campaign wouldn’t be possible.
