Students Rave

• “I’ve done all my editing here and now I’m applying to jobs using these projects as evidence of my abilities. If this wasn’t here I’d be DOOMED.”

• “The Digital Media help desk attendants saved my project more times thank I can count and I can’t thank them enough.”

Alex SchreyerProgram Director, Building and Construction TechnologySenior Lecturer, Architecture + Design

BCT 420: Designing with 3D CAD and BIM

“During the 2015 spring term, students

from the Commonwealth Honors College

and the Building and Construction

Technology program were among the

first to turn their 3D printing ideas into

reality using the UMass Library's new 3D

Innovation Center.

Shown here, students printed truss

bridge models, tools, a foldable comb, a

cup holder, and a keychain.”

“Bringing 3D printed models of actual artifacts

into the classroom gives an immediacy to the

object and recreates something of that

confrontation that comes in actual fieldwork..”

“The use of the 3D printing is a great

opportunity for students to visualize

their digital models, explore new

opportunities, communicate with

clients, and more quickly generate

design alternatives. The combination of

digital and physical models, allows

students to better grasp concepts

related to the shaping of terrain, while

encouraging creativity in their designs.”

EDUC 693: Instructional Design of Educational Technology

“This project-based course focuses on the

theoretical and practical issues related to

designing instruction for digital learning

environment. It is designed to show future

teachers how to use 3D printers as

instructional tools for supporting constructivist

learning experiences that are centered around

design, creativity, and innovation.”

MIE 415 Produce Design and Development

“The 3D printed object is a neck brace to

prevent neck injury for off road cyclists…We

chose to 3D print because it was the best

production option to go from a computer aided

design model to a physical prototype. The result

are nothing short of satisfactory. We have an

exact physical model of what was designed on

the computer using solid works. Not many other

production methods offer this.”

“The arm enables our client to pick up dropped objects

from the floor whereas before she had to wait for

someone to help her. This reduces tripping hazards and

helps our client keep her home clean. We chose 3-D

printing for the object because of its speed, cost, and

simplicity to manufacture. No off-the-shelf item could be

found that fit our application.”

“We are using it for an educational tool in our

public debate and hopefully use it as a model

to build a system on campus…The result of the

3D printed object has allowed us to present

complicated design information with a visual

aide. People have responded well to this

project, and we are more prepared compared

to other teams in our project.”

“We have used the model to measure

drag in a flow chamber. The object

created a lot of excitement from pretty

much everyone who saw it. In my lab, it

sparked many discussions on how they

could use a 3D printer both for teaching

and for their research.”

“[Is a] case for the bioreactor, which is a

simple placeholder for internal

components, with an insert for well plates

(with tissue samples within it) to slide

into. The goal of this bioreactor is to

stimulate tissue samples and test their

strength and elasticity through

mechanical force.”

“I chose to print a 3D ukulele in order to investigate

3D instruments as a viable alternative to

traditionally wooden instruments, in order to

reduce the environmental impacts of the music

industry…the corn based plastic filament means a

substitution of deforestation for the much more

sustainable reuse of corn refuse .”

“Transtibial prostheses (‘below knee’) bill

$990 million/year, in America alone, so the

usefulness and financial impact of what we

are doing is substantial. The human cost is

also significant: “poor fit” equates to difficulty

with the activities of daily living, time lost

from work, time in a wheelchair – most

relevantly, difficulty in holding a job and

building a life.”
