Christ Lutheran Church
Making Christ Known
2
A Message from Pastor Steve Rally Sunday begins September 10. River of Life Sunday School plans on working its way through the Bible in a school year. This fall in Sun-day worship services we will start with Genesis and make it through Old Testament highlights before Christmas. There will be a few Sun-days outside the rotation like Rally Sunday, Reformation Sunday, All Saints, and Generosity Sunday (Stewardship). If you have longed to better understand themes in the Old Testament and the connections to the New Testament we will be reviewing almost two millennia of the history of God and His people by Christmas. Highlights will include: creation, fall, judgement, Abraham, exodus, law, Israel, prophets, and the promise of the coming Messiah.
Also this fall, we will commemorate 500 years since the Reformation. A devotion book with excerpts from Martin Luther called “Day by Day We Magnify Thee” will be available to order in the church office. There is a copy available on the table outside the office.
In a recent Living Lutheran, a survey was asked of ELCA members. More than half believed they had to do something in addition to believ-ing in order to be saved. Luther would not be happy. The theme of jus-tification by faith, not works was central to his understanding of the gospel.
I remember the first time I began to understand justification by faith. I was at an interdenominational Bible School with a Baptist teacher us-ing a book written by an Anglican who was explaining Luther’s under-standing of justification by faith in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Ro-mans. It flipped my understanding of how to know that being made right with God has everything to do with trusting in his promises. It was freeing to know that I couldn’t work out my own salvation, only Jesus could do that.
Understanding that the Christian faith is a rescue religion where God does the saving, freed me up to serve. Instead of being driven by a sense of obligation to do the right thing, I was set free to love and serve out of gratefulness for what Jesus did for me. Free to love, free to live, free to serve God by serving others out of a sense of gratitude for God’s love for me set my life on an interesting journey.
My hope for you is that you grow in your faith in Christ. The world doesn’t need more religious people; it needs followers of Jesus to share the life and love they have found in Him.
Pastor Steve
PS. By now you have likely heard that while Pastor Nirmala was visit-ing her father in India as he was receiving cancer treatments, her father died. Please continue to remember the family of Pastor Apollos Peter in your prayers.

In the spirit of our community’s 150 year anniversary, Christ Lutheran Church wants to foster community involvement, sharing, and communication by hosting a Byron Community Jamboree on Sunday, October 15 at 4:00 P.M. We are hop-ing members of our church will be willing to participate in the success of this first annual jamboree. “Participation” may consist of participating in a community choir, assisting in or-ganizing the event, sharing your talents, and/or helping with the set/backdrops.
The jamboree will be a family-oriented, variety show that will run for approximately ninety minutes. The program will con-sist of a variety of people or groups sharing their talents; mu-sic (vocal and/or instrumental), readings, dance, or other ap-propriate talents. This year, the theme will be Patriotic and Show Tunes.
We are planning on a free will offering that will be donated to the Byron Food Shelf. The format of the event will be as follows: 1st Half (approximately 35 minutes-----7 acts Intermission-----15-20 minutes with cookies and beverages 2nd Half (approximately 35-40 minutes)-----7 acts with Combined Choir closing the event
Auditions for the jamboree will be held at Christ Lutheran Church on Thursday, September 14 at 6:30 P.M. and on Sat-urday, September 23 at 10:00 A.M. (tentative dates) The purpose of the audition is to select the participants based on variety and appropriateness.
If you are interested in participating, providing talent, or help-ing organize or carry out the event, contact Terry Bird at email: [email protected], or 269-6106, or call the CLC of-fice. This will be a great community event! Come join the fun!

Samaritan Bethany Report
Terry Bird is the new Christ Lutheran Board rep-resentative to Samaritan Bethany in Rochester. The Board meets once a month and is responsi-ble to provide strategic direction to Samaritan
Bethany to help ensure a continued great quality of care for the residents and long-term viability of the nursing home. Over the past months, Samaritan Bethany has held a Golf Fund raiser. This was the 11th annual event held on June 19th. Over $25,000 in profit was raised during the event, which was an increase over the $17,000+ raised last year. The funds raised in the event goes to improve the quality of life for the residents. Through this year’s event, enough mon-ey was raised to purchase the “It’s Never Too Late (iN2L.com) Package – providing user friendly technology components with applications for recreation, social connec-tion and memory care engagement. Six of the sponsoring churches had teams participating. Terry is hoping Christ Lutheran can put together a team to support next year’s event – typically held in mid-June.
