May 3, 2019 Dear Friends and Members of Church of the Cross, On behalf of Staff Parish and the entire Lead Team, I would like to announce Bishop Gregory Palmer’s appointment of Rev. Joel Schutte as the next Senior Pastor of Church of the Cross. Rev. Schutte’s first Sunday as our appointed pastor will be May 19, 2019. Rev. Joel Schutte is an Ordained Elder from another denomination serving as a Li-censed Local Pastor with the West Ohio Conference. In addition to serving churches outside of the Methodist denomination in various capacities, he has served in several congregations in the West Ohio Conference. Joel served as Worship Minister and As-sociate Pastor at Grace UMC in Perrysburg for six years, in East Toledo at Clark Street, Salem, and Unity UMC churches as Lead Pastor for two years, and as Minister of Wor-ship at Waterville UMC for two years. Rev. Schutte has also served ministry posts in the community as Spiritual Care Director for Otterbein Skilled Nursing at Perrysburg and Monclova, the Director of Christian Mission at the YMCA and JCC of Greater To-ledo, and the Senior Vice President of Ministry Development for Cherry Street Mission Ministries, in his twenty-one years of vocational ministry. Joel and his wife, Aprille, have been married for 17 years and currently live in Rossford, OH, with their seven children. The Schutte’s have been homeschooling most of their children for ten years and have fostered 19 children through Wood County Job and Family Services. Aprille has been a stay-at-home parent and foster parent, and along the way has earned a master’s degree in theology from Winebrenner Theological Seminary. Joel has a bachelor’s degree in Pastoral Studies from North Central University in Minne-apolis, MN, and a master’s degree in theology from Winebrenner Theological Seminary in Findlay, OH. Joel will be attending United Theological Seminary in the fall to finish the educational requirements of becoming an Elder in full connection with the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church. As Rev. Schutte has been with us in the role of Interim Pastor since October of 2018, this transition should be a natural one for the Schuttes and for Church of the Cross. If you have not yet met Joel and Aprille, please take a minute to introduce yourself to them on a Sunday or make an appointment with Lisa Gleason in the office to meet with Joel during the week. In Christ,

Heather Norris Chair of the SPRC and Lead Team Member

CREATION MEETING Joys of Motherhood

• A hug for no reason. • Belly laughs. • The light-bulb moment when your child understands something you’ve been trying to teach them. • Smiles and giggles. • Mud pies. • Arms raised in the air after a big accomplishment. • Hearing Scripture and prayer from your child’s lips. • Quiet moments on the couch. • Reading aloud together. • A family meal filled with conversation and laughter. • Watching your child be kind to another. • Recognizing a moment you’d like to freeze in time. • A child’s look of surprise and joy. • A quiet conversation that heals a wounded heart. • The words “I love you” — and a sticky kiss. —Unknown
