Dear Teachers, Welcome to the ESF Secondary CPD day! Our theme for the day is 'Making Learning the Focus: Learning and Teaching in the 21st Century' with the aim of continuing to improve classroom practice. Our last Foundation-‐wide CPD day focused on looking forward to learn new approaches, tools and strategies. This day will continue to look at what is happening in our classrooms and how to continue to improve the everyday experience and learning of our students. Each curriculum group has a programme specifically designed for members by their Curriculum Leaders, in consultation with Heads of Department. The sessions are based around key areas: DISRUPT / INSPIRE / EXPLORE / DESIGN / IMPACT / SHARE / GROW Session two offerings are ‘Free choice’ and each presenter has identified which of the Teacher Capability Framework criteria are used to support staff development. We are all looking forward to the day and how to implement what we learn in the classroom. There are so many people to thank for the success of this day: the talented and dedicated teachers offering to share what they do best, our Curriculum Group Leaders who have designed the programmes; and West Island School teaching and support staff for hosting us in their fantastic school. I hope you have a thought-‐provoking and valuable day,
-‐ Samantha Rodgers Secondary Learning and Teaching Adviser

Exploring Blendspace (Edcanvas) to enhance teaching and learning.
T1.2 Develops self as a teacher; T2.2 Teachers use ongoing assessment practices and data analysis to inform future teaching and learning
A demonstration of how to use Blendspace to enhance teaching and learning, utilising a rich combination of web 2.0 tools. These methods have been used at WIS, and some examples of varied curriculum use will be shared. Attendees will learn how to use these tools and will have time to experiment with them. Attendees should bring along a laptop and would benefit from having editing access to a course within their school VLE.

Google App ePortfolios for tutoring (and other purposes)
T2.1 Delivers quality learning outcomes for students-‐ Selects, development and uses a variety of appropriate resources and materials, including technology
Do you want to know more about your tutees and make tutor time more meaningful? Do you want to learn how to harness the power of Google Apps to get students to populate student sites? We will show you how to set up student sites using templates and how to give instructions through embedded slideshows. You will also see different models of how to manage these sites, including through Moodle, in which you can see a whole tutor group (or class') full pages in seconds without having to click into them. Attendees should bring a laptop and photos as we will experiment with some of the tools and features of Google sites and create a sample site.

Building Moodle Course: quick and easy strategies
T2.1 Delivers quality learning outcomes for students-‐ Selects, development and uses a variety of appropriate resources and materials, including technology
This session will cover the basics of building a deceptively simple yet appealing course in Moodle 2. We will make use of some of the new features in Moodle 2 and some unchanged tools from Moode 1, starting with adding basic content, building a visual menu using QuickStructure, embedding videos and Google content, and if time look at some more advanced features. Ideally, you will bring a laptop and have teacher editing rights to a Moodle 2 course page that you want to build from scratch or at least can actually work on during the session, as I intend this to be very much a hands on session. This session will assume very little prior knowledge.
Session Two: Free Choice (10.30-‐12.30) GROW

Alice in ToKland T1.2 Teachers engage in ongoing professional learning and apply it to improve their teaching practices; T2.1 Identify the most important teaching strategies to address students’ needs, diversity and multiple perspectives;
Just as in Wonderland, Alice found nothing could be taken for granted, so in ‘TOKland’, everything is under question. This workshop is an opportunity to learn more about how to 'ToKify' their delivery by getting to grips with the key ToK criteria, to ease the assessment process and to encourage critical thinking. Outcomes will include a brief snapshot of what ToK is including an exploration of 'Knowing Questions', 'Areas of Knowing' and 'Ways of Knowing' and working through some case studies, and adding ToK moments to your own lessons. You will leave with an appreciation of the extent you can rely on your subject to get to the ‘truth’ about ‘anything’.

In this session we will hear about the evolution of action research in our schools and how schools are using it. The session will also provide the opportunity to discuss the introduction of Foundation-‐wide action research teams in areas such as concept-‐based learning, the use of inquiry and creativity. If you would like to be a part of an action research team, to widen your experiences of learning within the Foundation and to work with teachers in other schools as they implement new approaches, come along to this session to learn more! Ideas for action research will also be discussed.

Better Questioning-‐ Students as questioners
T1.2 Develops self a teacher T2.1 -‐ Delivers quality learning outcomes for students
If we seriously encourage students’ engagement and ownership of their learning, then to involve students by embedding the effective questioning skills in the planning stages will serve to accelerate such an outcome. The research on the second language acquisition also demonstrated that teachers' elicitation techniques have not only played an indispensable role on classroom interaction but have also served as an effective strategy while assessing students understanding and language performance in an active approach, which may lead to efficient adjustment on the pedagogies employed by the teachers. Some popular strategies like Question Mapping, ICE Principle, Ryan’s Thinkers Keys and Bloom’s Taxonomy will be revisited during the workshop this time.

Effective Teaching Approaches for Language teachers-‐ TPR and TPRS
T1.2 Develops self a teacher T2.1 -‐ Delivers quality learning outcomes for students
Total Physical Response – TPR, a teaching approach initiated by Dr. James Asher and Fluency Through TPR Storytelling initiated by Blaine Ray and Contee Seely are those effective approaches for teaching foreign languages because they provide opportunities for students to receive a variety of repeated comprehensible input, therefore they will be able to build a foundation for them to create with the language and negotiate meaning when they communicate with native speakers with confidence. This workshop will present theories by Dr. Stephen Krashen to support the best practices in a language classroom and basic skills to use these particular approaches to help foreign language teachers in creating an interactive, personalized and relaxed learning environment for students to acquire the language naturally.
