The Neighbourhood Development Plan hasnow been 12 months in the making and theSteering Group is working through StageTwo — preparing the plan.

Between last August and October the Callfor Sites — each big enough for at least fivehomes — was published. Lewes DistrictCouncil requires 255 more homes to befound before 2030, making a total of 1,224 instrategic sites between 2010 and 2030.

Several sites were submitted, includingplans by Co-Op Group for a new store andother shops at the Meridian Centre, which

would be in accordance with residents’wishes identified during early consultations. The district council is reviewing thesubmissions.

The Steering Group still wants to hearviews about the future development of thearea from community groups and individuals.

Come along to a Steering Group meeting. They are held at Community House at theMeridian Centre on the first Wednesday eachmonth at 7pm. Find out more by emailingCathy Gallagher, who chairs the SteeringGroup, at [email protected]

Sussex Police wish you alla prosperous new year. The same rules aboutthwarting criminals willapply again this year.Keep doors and windowslocked, take valuables outof motor vehicles and donot give anyone theopportunity to make you avictim of crime.

Personal responsibilityis probably one of the bestand most effectivedeterrents to help withthis.

Never leave anything onshow and think of how youcan improve homesecurity. Perhapssomething as simple as aCCTV sticker in a windowwould help or a well-placed trellis.

We do not advocateturning your house intoFort Knox but a fewsimple things could makethe difference.

If something has a lock, then lock it.

We can supply small“Smile, you are on CCTV”posters, “We do not buy atthe door” stickers and, mypersonal favourite, theproperty-marking systemfor bikes, tools, etc.

FROM THE MP

Lloyd Russell-MoyleMP for Brighton Kemptown

and Peacehaven

When I speak to my constituents fromPeacehaven, the topic I have heard mostabout recently is Universal Credit. Peopleacross the country are angry Universal Creditis not working and Peacehaven is nodifferent. Universal Credit was designed withthree goals — to reduce costs, simplify thebenefit system and to make work pay.

While these are aims that many wouldsupport in principle, the reality is far from this. The programme is six years behind scheduleand billions of pounds over budget.

It forces families to make a choice betweenfeeding their kids or paying their rent, and itsculture fosters the sanctioning of recipientsfor attending their appointment five minuteslate.

Since Universal Credit’s rollout in Brightonand Peacehaven, constituents have

approached me to speak of their woes. Myoffice has seen how it affects every aspect ofpeople’s lives, from families suddenly struckby rent arrears and hardworking peoplehaving their payments reduced to the sickand disabled having vital support removedand cut.

Urgent reform is needed to ensure thatUniversal Credit does not discriminateagainst these groups of people. No familyshould be reliant on a foodbank and this iswhy I will continue to fight for the crucialreform that is needed.

Arranging a seminar, holding aconference or organising a show?Community House at the MeridianCentre is the place for it. Thereare many rooms to hire that arejust ideal. They are fullycompatible with disabledrequirements and all rooms
