Making Soluble Salts
L.O: To understand the terms soluble and insoluble and be able to represent the formation of different salts using word
equations
Are these mystery white powders insoluble or soluble?
How could you find out?
Particle Model
• Look at the particle model• The insoluble substances do not mix with the liquid• The soluble substances mix• Soluble substances are sometimes given the symbol
(aq) meaning aqueous – that it dissolves in water
In your own words describe the meaning of soluble and insoluble.
How are salts made? When an acid reacts with a base, a neutralization reaction occurs and produces a chemical called a salt.
A base can be soluble or insoluble
A soluble base is called an alkali
+acid base salt + Product x
Product x depends on
what base you use, it could be
water or hydrogen or
carbon dioxide and water
Look at the different bases. Work out if they are soluble or insoluble and record in your table
BASE INSOLUBLE / SOLUBLE (an alkali)
How to make the saltWhen an acid reacts with a base, a neutralization reaction occurs and produces a chemical called a salt.
+acid base salt + Product x
acid + alkali salt + water
acid + metal salt + hydrogen
acid + metal oxide salt + water
acid + carbonate salt + carbon dioxide + water
Product x depends on
what base you use, it could be
water or hydrogen or
carbon dioxide and water
Each different base will give a different reaction:
How to name the saltWhen an acid reacts with a base, a neutralization reaction occurs and produces a chemical called a salt.
The name of the salt depends on the names of the reactants.
The first part of the salt’s name comes from the base:
e.g. sodium hydroxide sodium…
The second part of the salt’s name comes from the acid:
e.g. sulfuric acid …sulfate
For example, if sodium hydroxide neutralizes sulfuric acid, the product is a salt called sodium sulfate.

Naming salts
Making your salt!In pairs you will each be given a different base and hydrochloric acid
- Try to make the salt (the salt will be dissolved so just make sure your solution is neutral)
- Work out the word equation for your reaction write this down.- How could you get the salt out the solution?
- You will need to explain to the class what salt you have made and what the equation is
+acid base salt + Product x
• Hydrochloric acid and zinc• Sulphuric acid and magnesium• Nitric acid and aluminium• Copper oxide and sulphuric acid• Iron oxide and hydrochloric acid• Zinc oxide and nitric acid• Sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid• Potassium hydroxide and sulphuric acid
Can you work out the products in the following reactions?
