Making the Ornaments By Janice C. Brueggemann © 2004 General Stitching Instructions These instructions are for 14-count Aida. See “General Finishing Instructions” for other ideas for stitching your ornaments. Measure your fabric into four-inch (4″) squares, but do not cut them apart. Using a brightly colored thread, mark fabric by basting around each square. You should have 28 squares marked on your fabric. Note: Use a different thread color than any used in the ornaments so it will stand out. Find the center of each square by carefully measuring from the top and sides of each square. Use a brightly colored thread and make a small stitch at this point. Find the center of the chart by following the arrows on the side and top of the design towards the center. With a pencil, make a small mark on the chart at this point. This marks the point where you will begin stitching. Make your first stitch in the center of the square using the thread color indicated by the center of the chart. If you used a colored thread to mark the center, take care not to catch that thread with your first stitch. Then carefully remove your marking stitch. Follow the chart to complete the stitching on your design. Make sure all cross stitches are worked in the same direction. This will give a smooth appearance to the stitched surface. We recommend a size #26 tapestry needle for use on counted cross-stitch. Never store your needle in the design area. It could make a rust mark or a permanent needle mark in your design. Store your needle on the edge of your fabric. When you have completed stitching your ornaments, carefully cut them apart along the thread lines surrounding each square of fabric. Finish the set of ornaments as desired. Finishing Instructions Cross stitch ornaments can be finished in a variety of ways, but sometimes the simplest treatment allows the message of the ornament to shine through. By Janice C. Brueggemann © 2004

General Stitching Instructions These instructions are for 14-count Aida. See “General Finishing Instructions” for other ideas for stitching

    your ornaments.

    • Measure your fabric into four-inch (4″)

squares, but do not cut them apart. Using a

brightly colored thread, mark fabric by

basting around each square. You should have

28 squares marked on your fabric. Note: Use

a different thread color than any used in the

ornaments so it will stand out.

    • Find the center of each square by carefully

measuring from the top and sides of each

square. Use a brightly colored thread and

make a small stitch at this point.

    • Find the center of the chart by following the

arrows on the side and top of the design

towards the center. With a pencil, make a

small mark on the chart at this point. This

marks the point where you will begin

    stitching.

    • Make your first stitch in the center of the

square using the thread color indicated by

the center of the chart. If you used a colored

thread to mark the center, take care not to

catch that thread with your first stitch. Then

    carefully remove your marking stitch.

    • Follow the chart to complete the stitching on

    your design.

    • Make sure all cross stitches are worked in the

same direction. This will give a smooth

    appearance to the stitched surface.

We recommend a size #26 tapestry needle for

use on counted cross-stitch. Never store your

needle in the design area. It could make a rust

mark or a permanent needle mark in your

design. Store your needle on the edge of your

    fabric.

When you have completed stitching your

ornaments, carefully cut them apart along the

thread lines surrounding each square of fabric.

Finish the set of ornaments as desired.

Finishing Instructions Cross stitch ornaments can be finished in a variety of ways, but sometimes the simplest treatment allows

the message of the ornament to shine through.

    Finishing Instructions For Perforated Paper

If you have never worked on perforated paper,

don’t be hesitant to stitch on it. Perforated paper

is actually quite durable and easy to stitch on. Be

careful not to fold or wrinkle the paper while

    stitching your project.

Try these tips to keep the floss from catching on

the cut edges of the perforated paper or

    perforated plastic while stitching:

    • Cut the material as close to the solid area

    between holes as possible.

    • Round off corners.

  • Jesse Tree Ornament Charts by Jance C. Brueggemann © 2004—Page 2

    • Smooth out all edges using very fine sand

paper or a fine emery board.

Do not stitch tightly. Although very durable,

perforated paper may tear. When this happens,

use craft glue to bond a piece of lightweight

interfacing or a piece of a tea bag onto the

    backside.

    • Finish by trimming the ends on the backside.

Place a lightweight fusible interfacing on the

backside, and bond with an iron.

Use a fabric finisher if you wish to create a cloth

backing, or glue on another piece of perforated

    paper, lining up the holes.

    • After all of the backing is on, trim paper one

    square from edge.

    Finishing Instructions For Perforated Plastic

    • On the backside of the finished ornament,

glue a piece of lightweight interfacing using

    tacky glue.

    • After all backing is on, trim the plastic one

    square from edge.

    • You may also glue a cloth or felt backing to

    the ornament.

    • A hanger loop may be added using floss,

    braid, or ribbon.

    Finishing Instructions For Fabric Backing

These instructions are for use with 14-count

    Aida.

    • Lightly press ornaments on the back to

remove any marks left from stitching. Press

the backing fabric to remove any creases

    from folding.

    • Cut 28 4″ squares of the backing fabric.

    • Cut 28 4″ squares of thin batting.

    To assemble . . .

    • Layer batting, backing fabric (right side up),

and stitched ornament (right side down). The

right side of the ornament should be facing

the right side of the backing fabric.

    • Pin.

    • You may hand stitch with a single thread to

    hold the ornament straight.

    • Carefully machine stitch around the

ornament, leaving an opening at the top for

turning. Be careful not to stitch over the

    border on the ornament.

    • Remove pins and carefully trim excess

    material from seam.

    • Trim fabric diagonally across corners close to

    stitching.

    • Turn the ornament right-side out.

    • Use a small blunt object to press into each

corner to make the corner straight.

    • Attach the hanger in the center of the

    opening.

    • Carefully hand stitch the opening closed.

You may add braid, ribbon, rickrack, and many

other trims to personalize and embellish your

    ornaments.

    Happy Stitching!
