Miracle Small-Lee, our rst 24-week Level III

NICU graduate, was born on May 21stand

weighed only 810 grams, 12.5 inches. After 125

days in our NICU, she was discharged on Sept.

    22ndat 7 lbs., 1 oz.

Congrats to parents Jeremy and Kiesha, as

well as, the entire NICU staff, including nurses,

    respiratory, neonatologists, lab, radiology

technicians, pharmacists, housekeeping, dietaryand social services.

This is a huge milestone for the family and the hospital. A year ago, Miracle would have been

transferred to a facility in Pensacola, Gainesville or Birmingham, but our new Level III NICU allows

the baby and parents to stay close to home.

HCA Gives $1 Million in Aid for

    Ebola Response to CDC Foundation

HCA has donated a $1 million cash donation to the CDC Foundation to help support internationalEbola epidemic response efforts involving the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

and their work with partners on the ground in West Africa.

HCA is one of the leading providers of healthcare services in the U.S. and has a long history of

supporting relief efforts including those following the earthquake in Haiti, the Indonesian tsunami,

Hurricane Katrina and Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The $1 million cash donation by HCA was

made to the CDC Foundations Global Disaster Response Fund.

The Ebola epidemic in West Africa is a humanitarian crisis. The number of individuals infected with the

Ebola virus doubles approximately every three weeks with more than 5,800 cases, based on the latest

estimates. Tragically, the number of deaths has increased from 1,500 to more than 2,800 in the same

time period. These numbers are only expected to climb without immediate action.

As part of the Medical-Surgical Excellence focus, HCA is committed to improving nursing efciency, patient satisfaction and patient

outcomes by promoting the professional development of our nurses. We recognize the many contributions that nurses make to the

overall strength of the organization. Therefore, HCA is dedicated to the further advancement of the professional image of Medical-

Surgical as a specialty. HCA has established a partnership with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) through an

enterprise agreement to participate in Success Pays. Any Medical-Surgical nurse who is interested in completing the certication will

need to complete the request form and submit to their director and CNO for approval.

HCA Partners with ANCC in Providing

    Medical-Surgical Certication

Through its HCA Care Grant, HCA is pleased to offer

sponsorship for oncology nurses to participate in the online

Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and Oncology Nursing

    Certication Corporation (ONCC) Chemotherapy and

Biotherapy Certicate Course. The grant was submitted bySarah Cannon, the cancer service line for HCA, and approved

for $100,000 through HCA Cares to assist with the cost of

facilitating HCA nurses to access the online ONS/ONCC

Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Certicate Course in 2014.

This new online program equips nurses with the tools

needed to safely administer chemotherapy and biotherapy

agents to patients with cancer. The ONS Chemotherapy

and Biotherapy Certicate course, the national standard for

chemotherapy administration training, is the HCA approved

standard for nurse training in all facilities where chemotherapy

is administered. This training course meets the requirements

for the American College of Surgeons Commission on Canceraccreditation and provides chemotherapy credentialed staff

with practice updates every two years as part of the certicate

    renewal process.

For more information, contact Marsha Buntley, Polito Cantu or

the Education department about this certication opportunity.

    Facility & Privacy Update

    3

Imagine youre about to go on vacation. You ask your friend, John, to bring your mail inside your house each day while youre away. Even

though your friend has the keys to your entire house, you expect that he will simply place the mail inside, lock the door and leave.

But what if he sneaks a few peeks at whats in your stack of mail, or pokes around a bit in your house while inside? Not only is such

behavior unethical and unnecessary, but you feel exposed and start to question the extent of the privacy invasion. What has he told

others? You trusted him to do just the minimum requested.

Similarly, our patients trust us to access and use their information appropriately. Each one of our workplace members must access, use

and disclose only the minimum amount of information necessary to carry out job duties -- regardless of the extent of access provided

or available. Do the right thing and protect information!
