DP World Delivering world-class infrastructure to the UK

Vital infrastructure for the UKs economy

The UK economy depends on the ree fow o goods

into and out o our island nation. Throughout history, shipping has played a crucial role in the national

supply chain. The UK is also a global shipping hub

a vital transit stage in the movement o goods around

    the world.

Globalisation and the rise o emerging economies

are driving considerable increases in container reight

movements. Since containerisation started in the

1950s, ships have substantially increased in size.

Our national port capabilities have ailed to keep pace with events and provide su cient uture capacity o

the right type in the best location.

The UK needs more port capacity

The UK needs extra port capacity to remain

competitive and to uture-proo its status as a

    world trade hub.

The UKs ability to berth the latest generation of

Ultra Large Container Ships (ULCS) is limited anddoes not meet long-term demand projections.

London Gateway Making the UK more ef cient

Today, the majority o shipping containers enter the

UK through ports located in the South East. The

containers are then sent to distribution centres where

they are unpacked and the goods are sorted be ore

    being transported to shops.

Distribution centres are o ten located over 100 miles

away rom the ports in the South East, which means

every day many thousands o lorry miles are needed

to transport containers across the country. This

logistics model is ine cient and we can reduce a

great deal o transportation currently taking place in

the UK by building distribution centres next to the port

at London Gateway. Savings in lorry miles, nancial

costs and carbon emissions will be signi cant,

making the UK more e cient, more competitive and

    less congested.

The location or London Gateway is excellent. It not

only provides opportunities or major retailers to build

their distribution centres next to the port o entry, it

is also uniquely situated in the heart o the biggest

consumer market in Europe. When goods leave the

distribution centres at London Gateway, they will have

less distance to travel than existing deep-sea ports in

    order to reach the consumer.

63% o imports into the UK arrive intoSouth East ports, an area with only 10%

    o the UK warehousing capacity.

    The economic bene ts

Importantly, much of the employment created at London Gateway will be new net jobs and will not be

displacement o existing jobs. This is excellent news or UK uture growth.

Government thinking supports and endorses the case for London Gateway as it embodies major investment in

an area identi ed as a regeneration priority and it entails carbon emission reductions.

Beyond the initial 1.5bn FDI, London Gateway will act as a catalyst for substantial further investment by

enhancing the competitiveness o the UKs economy.

    Employment

At a challenging time or the

    UK employment market,

    London Gateway provides a

positive beacon. Substantiallong-term employment will be

    created by the development

and operation o the port and

    logistics park.

    In addition, with

    complementary policy

    and in rastructure support,

    London Gateway has

urther potential to beleveraged as a catalyst or

    wider regeneration and

    employment opportunities.

it is estimated that a total

    of around 36,100 permanent

    jobs (including direct, indirect

    and induced impacts) will

    be supported once the Port

and Logistics Park are fully operational and every year

    thereafter.

    The economic bene ts

    Skills

The days when employment in ports was dominated

by manual labour have long gone. London Gateway

will require the application o skills and technology to

create solutions or the global logistics industry.

The skills required will include high-end IT and

management roles together with a broad mix o

pro essional nancial capability as well as highly-

trained operatives using world-leading port and

    logistics park technology.
