““

Some Saturdays begin with cross country meets or outrigger canoe paddling regattas. Though we usually have to wake up real early for these activities, these are fun events. Classmates and parents come out to cheer on the participants, and then after the contest, all the parents bring food for the entire group to have a big lunch. ~11th grade student from Germany

On Saturday afternoons and evenings, I like it when Susie (Ms. Jones, the Residential Life Director) makes arrangements for several of us to go to the other side of the island to shop at the mall, see a movie, and then go to dinner. Other times one of my friends will invite me to her house to sleep over for a marathon movie night. ~12th grade student from France

I like to sleep late on Sunday mornings, but then I like to go to the beach with my friends during the afternoon. Since I love photography, I’m always taking my camera with me to take pictures of me and my friends playing on the beach and in the ocean. ~10th grade student from Japan

One early Sunday morning, Mr. H picked us up for a trip to the top of Haleakala to see the sunrise. Though it is quite beautiful atop the mountain, unfortunately when we got up there it was raining. But, we had fun anyway, literally dancing in the midst of the rain clouds at nearly 10,000 feet. ~9th grade student from Switzerland

WHY I LOVE MAUI PREP

““

I came to school at Maui Prep after attending school in Canada for two years. I wish I had chosen to come to Maui Prep sooner. Maui Prep has been like a family to me. In Canada, I would go home and stay in my room, and now I have friends and we study together and enjoy the beaches and sun. ~Ikuko, from Japany

Each teacher and student was very friendly to me. They helped me learn English and everything in the US. They are like my family. I love them. ~Di Pang, from Guangzhou

The ocean is my refuge for all the problems that appear in life. I am so glad that I am surrounded by the ocean, so that whenever I struggle with something, I can just jump out of it for a few hours and forget everything… The boarding house is really nice. Its location is pretty much perfect. It’s close to the ocean, and it only takes 5 minutes to get to the school or to some surf spots. ~ Niels, from Germany

Maui Prep is extremely unique. The school presents so many different opportunities for students, and the student/teacher relationship cannot be matched. I have been able to pursue my passions, lighting and sound. I have been able to use my skills in helping the “7 am Band” and our drama productions. ~ Nick, from Scotland

This place is the most beautiful place in my life. I feel lucky to come here… The difference between Maui and Shanghai is that people here are more friendly to each other, always smiling at each other, and that’s what I like most about Maui. Shanghai is more urban with everyone having more pressure to work hard, to make money to feed their families. But I think when you always smile to everyone, they will feel more comfortable and be more relaxed. ~Jay, from Shanghai

I really wanted to study in Hawaii, because I want to be a dolphin trainer at America in the future. This is precisely why Maui Prep is the best school for me! I can learn marine biology and scuba diving, I can study English, sing in the “7 am Band,” and I can make good friends. I’m very glad I came here. ~Mioh, from Japan

ADVANTAGES

BOARDINGFACILITY

TO BOARDING AT MAUI PREP

HALE MAUI

Boarding students are generally better prepared academically for college because their study times are structured and supervised, and there is extra tutorial support available.

Boarding students are generally better prepared socially and emotionally for college, because they have developed their communal living skills and have had a chance to develop meaningful relationships with students from other countries and cultures.

Boarding students are generally better prepared to thrive in the global economy, because they have honed their networking and communication skills with peers from different cultures and who speak different languages.

Boarding at Maui Prep provides international students with an advantage in college admissions: American colleges and universities favor students who graduate from Hawaii-based college prep high schools.

Boarding at Maui Prep provides students with a very safe, secure, and healthy environment for rigorous study, and offers students with interests in the sciences and the environment with especially rich and in some cases unique field experience opportunities.

Boarding students also learn how to care for and maintain their community and facility. Not only will students perform chores, they are given opportunities to work with faculty in organizing activities, lead programs, prepare meals, etc.

Ocean-side facility with beach access.

Three-story facility providing apartment-style dorm rooms with kitchenettes, full bathrooms, ample closet storage, and outdoor/covered lanai’s with an ocean view.

The boarding facility has security gates and cameras that provide student residents and faculty with an additional layer of protection.

The boarding facility is located approximately 4 kilometers from Maui Prep’s main campus, and students are shuttled to and from campus daily.

Most meals are provided at the boarding facility except for lunch on school days (which is provided at school) and when students are participating in off-campus activities.

In the top-floor community room, students convene for study hours, some meals, and community meetings.

Private beach access with qualified supervision provides students with a safe environment for ocean swimming, snorkeling, stand-up paddling, surfing, etc.

ENGLISH LANGUAGELEARNER PROGRAM

Maui Prep’s ELL program uses only English as the instructional language for eligible students, supporting them in their efforts to develop English language proficiency in listening/comprehending, speaking, reading, and writing.

The ELL program allows students to spend most of their day in Maui Prep’s core academic and elective courses.

All ELL students are assigned to an ELL lab; ELL students classified as “advanced beginners” and “intermediates” in English language

proficiency are also assigned to small group and some one-on-one intensive instruction and support sessions.

ELL instructors collaborate with other Maui Prep faculty members to develop individualized goals and plans for each ELL student.

Admissions for ELL students:

• Maui Prep utilizes the table, below, to help determine a student’s English language proficiency and readiness to succeed

at Maui Prep. These baseline scores guide the admission committee; they are not rigid benchmarks.

• These minimum requirements are based on the assumption that all non-native English speakers intend matriculation at an

American college or university following graduation. For those non-native English speakers who intend to spend no more

than a semester or year at Maui Prep, the English language proficiency requirements may be relaxed.

• Additionally, because advanced-beginner and intermediate ELL students require more intensive and small group support,

there are only a limited number of spaces available each academic year.

Maui Preparatory Academy (“Maui Prep”) values diversity and seeks students from different backgrounds. Maui Prep does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, national or ethnic origin, religion, sex, or sexual orientation in the administration of its educational and admissions policies. Maui Prep is committed to fair and equitable treatment of persons with disabilities and endeavors to provide reasonable accommodation, provided such accommodation does not impose an undue hardship on the Academy.

MOANA INSTITUTEFOR MARINE STUDIES

The Moana Institute is a marine studies immersion program that caters to

a global audience.

Interested students may participate in a semester-long program that

will satisfy requirements for most American high schools, or they may

participate in a less intensive 2-week summer program.

The marine studies program takes full advantage of Maui’s marine, coastal,

and watershed resources to expose and reinforce the core environmental

concept of interconnectivity.

Most of a student’s time in the Marine Studies Semester Program is spent in the field, in which the ocean, beaches, mountain trails,

rainforests, and watersheds are the “living laboratory.”

Curriculum includes coral reef ecology, marine mammalogy,

watershed systems and ecology, research methodology,

island ecology and sustainability, oceanography, Hawaiian

and marine history, marine mythology, underwater

photography, and so on.

Through the mediums of snorkeling, SCUBA, sailing, hiking,

and maybe even a little surfing and paddling, students work

alongside scientific researchers to explore Hawaii’s terrestrial

and marine ecosystems.

Students in the marine studies semester program are

registered as Maui Preparatory Academy students and,

therefore, are eligible to participate in school team sports in

the fall season (girls’ volleyball and boys/girls cross-country)

for first semester students and in the spring season (golf,

surfing, tennis, and track & field) for second semester students.

MARINE STUDIES SEMESTER ABROAD PROGRAM

Hawaii joined the United States as the 50th state in 1959. The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago of eight major islands, several atolls, numerous smaller islets, and undersea seamounts in the North Pacific Ocean. Geographically, Maui is the second largest island of the eight main islands. The Hawaiian Islands are located approximately 2400 miles (3860 kilometers) southwest of San Francisco.

Hawaii follows Hawaii Standard Time (GMT-10 hours), which is 5 hours behind Eastern Standard Time and 2 hours behind Pacific Standard Time. Hawaii does not observe Daylight Savings Time so add one extra hour to the time difference during this period (March through November).

Honolulu International Airport (HNL) on Oahu is Hawaii’s major airport, serving as the entry point for most of Hawaii’s visitors, especially from Asia. European, South American, and North American travelers to Hawaii can find direct flights into Kahului (OGG), Maui’s main airport, from several U.S.A. mainland international airports, including Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Dallas and Chicago.

Hawaii’s climate is tropical. Summer is warmer and dryer, while winter is a bit cooler. Year-round trade winds help to moderate temperatures and humidity.

• In the winter months, the Auau channel between the islands of Maui, Lanai, and Molokai is one of the best places to whale watch in the world. In fact, right from Maui Prep’s campus, students can see humpback whales breaching the ocean’s surface.

• Maui has more than 80 incredible beaches with a combined shoreline that spans 120 miles (193 kilometers).

• Famous for viewing incredible sunrises, Haleakala National Park features Maui’s dormant volcano Haleakala, which means “the house of the sun.” The peak of Haleakala is about 10,000 feet (3,000 meters).

• Lahaina, the once thriving whaling port in the mid-1800s, is now a lively gathering place for dining, shopping, art, and entertainment, and is the main retail and commercial center for West Maui, where Maui Prep is located.

• In addition to 19th century whaling, Maui is also known for its sugar and pineapple plantations. Maui’s first sugar mill began operations in 1828. As the sugar industry in the islands grew, an influx of plantation workers from China, Japan, Puerto Rico, Korea, the Philippines, Portugal and Europe arrived in Hawaii. These immigrants became the foundation of the multi-ethnic culture of Hawaii today.
