Game OverviewMaking Words was designed to be used as a teaching tool and review game. On the opening page, there is a link to several short videos that can be used to help the children remember the short vowel sounds.Each vowel has an introductory spinner page that consists of four rimes to use with the whole class to work together at making words. The children can then use these pages individually, or with a partner for further practice.On the review pages, the vowels are mixed together to give the children the opportunity to practice making words. Again, this can be done individually, or with a partner.At the end of the presentation, there are several spinners that can be used with the whole group to play instructional games.

Creating My GameAs a first grade teacher, I have been teaching phonics to children for almost 30 years. I have seen many trends come and go. Even when phonics was on the way out, I stayed true to a skill which I believe is very important for children to be introduced to when learning to read. Even though this is a skill that has been around forever, it is important to always be looking for new ways to present it. That brings me to the reason for creating this game. I wanted a tool that would catch the attention of the children and help them grasp this skill.

Evaluation and Assessment

If the children are using the game with a partner, the teacher can observe the interaction between them to evaluate the ability of the children to make words and read them properly. As partners, they can also write the words they make on paper provided, and the teacher can have the children practice reading the words they make.

When playing by themselves, the teacher will have the child write the words made on paper provided and then the child will read these words to the teacher or take the paper home to read the words as homework.

21st Century SkillsMarc Prensky’s 21st century skills can be seen throughout the process of this game.

The children must think critically to determine if the words should be placed in the real or not real side of their paper.

When playing with partners they must take turns and make good decisions.

This game is a self directed activity where they can plan with their partner to work together or compete. They would then determine that the winner would be the first player to make 10 real words, or to play a certain amount of time. Thus using the skill of making a plan.

They can use leadership skills to help another child who is unsure what to do, or who needs help reading a word.

They will continue to improve through learning as they discover new words and write them on their paper.
