Letter from the Interim President

Greetings to our wonderful faculty!

Welcome to the 2017 Faculty Development Week. This year’s theme is “Embracing Our Future and Responsibilities: Through Communication, Technology, Wellness, and Knowledge.” Our theme alludes salient aspects of growth and development within Malcolm X College, as we gain a comprehensive understanding of our institution in support of the responsibility we have to our students, one another, and external constituencies.

It is an honor and privilege to serve as Interim President and to have the opportunity to work with esteemed faculty whose commitment to craft, passion to teach, and dedication to our students is unmatched.

Each stimulating conversation I have with you on how we can help students achieve academic excellence is treasured; it propels me to seek additional ways to support you and our student body toward embracing future excellence at Malcolm X College. Our responsibilities are grounded in collaborative efforts, professional transparency, and deliberate quality education, and it is with deep appreciation that I say thank you for being dynamic educators at Malcolm X College.

Here’s to many great semesters together!

David A. Sanders, M.S. Ed. Interim President

Letter from the Interim Vice President

Greetings Esteemed Faculty!

As the summer comes to an end, and we prepare to begin another academic year, I look forward to working with you all as we endeavor to inspire and educate our amazing and diverse student body. I’d like to personally welcome you to the 2017 Faculty Development Week, “Embracing our Future and Responsibilities.” We are focused on moving forward together and sharing in the responsibility of sustaining a healthy student body, faculty, staff, and college. I have had the distinct honor and privilege to serve as the Interim Vice President of this fine institution for nearly two years. Serving as the Chief Academic Officer is a responsibility that I do not take lightly; maintaining the academic integrity of the institution, ensuring that our students are afforded the best educational experience, and supporting each of you so that you are able to effectively do your job, is something I hold in high regard. It is my RESPONSIBILTY, and I have embraced the role even during a time when the financial FUTURE of higher education seems bleak. As educators, we persevere and keep the end goal in mind - the success of our students and the impact we are making on their future. This academic year, I challenge each and every one of you to “live our mission” and reflect on the many reasons why you intentionally decided to bring your talents to Malcolm X College. Perhaps it’s that you love teaching and watching students grow through the acquisition of knowledge phase; maybe you’re wholly committed to the notion of the “American Dream” - that education should be accessible to everyone; it surely isn’t the lucrative salary! Many of you chose this path because THIS work is rewarding – you have accepted the RESPONSIBILTY of changing someone’s life, shaping their FUTURE, for the better. I am humbled by the tremendous job each of you do. I am confident that we will have a tremendous year of creative and intellectual experiences for our students. Thank you for your continued service to the College and most importantly, for the integral role you play in the lives of our students. All the best, Kimberly Hollingsworth Interim Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs

DePaul’s Two-Year College Teaching Internship program places graduate students in Chicago-area classrooms to work alongside experienced instructors. This session will explore the internship experience from the student intern's and the mentor/instructor's viewpoints and discuss ways in which sponsoring an intern contributes to the profession by allowing experts on the ground to have a role in training new faculty. What are the professional and ethical responsibilities of training new instructors for the adjunct pool and for full-time employment? What sets the two-year college instructor apart? How were YOU trained for your job? This session will be discussion-based, and participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences as well as learn about mentoring a teaching intern.

3301 Prof. Tomer Kanan Plicker and ZipGrade

Plickers grew out of a shared belief that teachers shouldn’t have to teach blind, data doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and students shouldn’t be afraid of being wrong. We believe that deep learning can happen when we measure our progress and use data as a starting point, not just an ending metric. ZipGrade turns your phone or tablet into an optical grading machine similar to a Scantron. It reads free-to-download answer sheets in multiple sizes. Provide instant feedback to students by grading exit tickets, quizzes, and formative assessments as soon as they finish. Many teachers now grade as soon as students

If every moment is perceived as one’s unique opportunity to engage in learning, then the classroom becomes a place to experience life and happiness.
