67-year-old male has nocturia, urinary

hesitancy , “weak” urine stream, and

dribbling at the end of urination.

On digital rectal exam the prostate gland is

enlarged and non-tender. There are no

palpable masses.

Nodular Prostatic HyperplasiaThe autopsy specimen consists of a cut section of prostate gland.Note the numerous large and small circular nodules.

Describe the high power histologic findingsThe microscopic section of the prostate gland reveals a gland in which the hyperplastic epithelium forms folds (arrow) which extendinto the lumen.

Benign Prostatic HyperplasiaThe autopsy specimen consists of the urinary bladder and attached prostate. The bladder is opened longitudinally along the anterior midline through the prostatic urethra. Note the distinct bands or trabeculations in the posterior wall of the bladder. What is the nature of the trabeculations? What is the pathogenesis of the trabeculations?
