The Israeli Mamanet (Newcombe) league is the largest social - sports project specifically for moms. No Barrier of age, height or weight*

The Mamanet League was established in 2005 and has since spread to thousands of players all across the country.

Mamanet is recognized as a non-profit organization, and donations are tax exempt. Presently all Members of the organization are volunteers , they do not receive salaries.

Mamanet impacts the social status of women especially in the lower and middle Socioeconomic status and in countries where the culture is patriarchal. Mamanet puts the mother in the center .

Mamanet impacts the quality of life of women who are becoming players in the league. “Every woman can” - is not a slogan - its a reality. Women practice every week and have games during the league . It gives them a reason to “get” out of their home, take care of themselves health wise :they become aware of nutrition -what they eat and influence all the family by instilling healthy and active lifestyle.

Mamanet impacts: Social Environment

The first results of a survey done with Columbia University and Kiryat Uno Academic with the purpose of finding what are the reason for women to join Mamanet came up with the following reasons:a) Social reasons – to feel part of a group, spend time with friendsb) Personal reasons – quality time for herself, doing for herselfc) Sport reasons – keeping fit & healthy, competitiveness, achievements

The nature of a team means working together, meeting once or twice a week for practices and games, and of course meeting new people from your community who have a similar love for sport.

The league is associated with the school in which the child is enrolled, you also have this common ground.

The local community

League members feel pride to be part of a unique, city-wide sports league, with the weekly games being published in local papers, and their children attending the games.

In addition, the Mamanet League has taken on community initiatives such as “adopting” children from a local boarding school for underprivileged youth. Mamanet families take in the students for weekends, and holidays, bring them to organized activities and outings such as bowling, movies or pizza parties.

In addition, the league holds a yearly fund-raising party where artists, musicians and famous guest appearances perform, with all proceeds going to the boarding school.

Education

The common denominator of each group is their role at the school. Mamanet teams are school-specific, meaning that each mother belongs to her children’s school team.

The children are their moms biggest fans, and come to cheer – not jeer! In fact, boos, or other non-sportsmanlike activity on the part of the children is discouraged, and can even cost the team points.

Mothers teach their children to experience sports, and good sportsmanship as a way of life

Mamanet impacts: Relationship of parent and child (focus on mother) Instead of being the “soccer mom” who drives her children to practice and cheers

them on by the sidelines, the mother becomes the “star” of the game, and the children become her fans!

This allows the mother to serve as a role-model for good sportsmanship, dedication to a team, and commitment to physical exercise.

Once a year a kidnet tournament is held, kids of the mothers are the players and are also referees. It is a one day happening.

Health & Physical Activity

Many busy working moms find it difficult to find time to get the physical activity they need. The group aspect of the league, and the fact that the participants are part of a team provide motivation for the busy mom to participate in the league.

The association has approached Mamanet to organize and be in charge of creating a newcombe league for children with intellectual disabilities.

NA`AMAT – The Movement for the Advancement of the Status of Women in Israel works to prevent the phenomena of violence against women within the family and in society.

NA`AMAT operates two centers for the prevention and treatment of violence, in Tel Aviv and in Haifa in addition to a shelter for battered women and their children located in Tel Aviv.

Mamanet was approached and asked to assist women and children who had to leave their home and move to another city. Mamanet embraces the family, the women join a team and the family is then “adopted” by the team.

How does it work?

A team is made of 8-12 players. There is no limit to the number of teams in one school

A captain is appointed and she is in charge of the team Mamanet practice camps are done on a quarterly basis The Coaches are qualified and are either men or women and receive salaries.

School compete against each other in the local level and in the national level tournament are between cities.
