By Mary Louise Holle, Mary Elizabeth Blatchley 1987,279~~ $26.70 paperback Although this book was written primarily for nursing students, it also contains information that may be helpful to the new manager. In the second edition, the authors emphasize how important it is for the beginning nurse to understand the principles of leadership and management and how those principles are applied to patient care. The authors believe that all practicing nurses can function as leaders and that leadership skills can and should be learned. They further point out that these skills are necessary for all levels of practitioners within the nursing profession, although different positions require different leadership responsibilities. The book is well organized, and each chapter is based on a different leadership role, such as human relations, management, or staff develop- ment. The principle theories of management and leadership are presented throughout the book, and the key concepts are highlighted with main ideas clearly delineated. In addition, the book provides a historical perspective on the development of leadership and a comprehensive review of leadership and management styles. All chapters conclude with a summary of key points as well as an exercise to test the comprehension of the material presented. Answers and discussionsof the exercises appear in the back of the book. This is a valuable book for nursing students because it presents a thorough review of the components of leadership and management in nursing. It also emphasizes the importance of efficient management of patient care. Finally, the book may encourage students to consider management as a career. Although this book is too basic for experienced managers, new managers without formal prep- aration for the management role may find it helpful.
