Marriedwiththreechildren,hisprofessionalinterestsincludepicturearchivingandcommunicationsystems(PACS)andteleradiology.HeisaformermemberofthePanLondonPACSBoard2003–2005andtheNationalClinicalReferencePanelforConnectingforHealth.

Revalidation and appraisal—how to make it work for youDr David Grant

Appraisalisacycleofimprovementdesignedtoallowthedoctortodeveloptheirpractice,soastodeliverbetterpatientcare.Itiswell-establishedinnon-medicalcareerstructures,buttheadministrativeburden,timerequiredandcosthavemadeitsincorporationintoroutinemedicalpracticeslowerthaninothercareerdisciplines.However,thereisalegitimatepublicexpectationthatdoctorsshouldbecompetentandpreviouslytherewasnomechanismofassessingthisonaregularbasisaftertheoriginaldateofqualification.

AppraisalisamandatedGeneralMedicalCouncil(GMC)requirement,butthechallengeistomovefromcompliancetoasenseofcommitmenttotheprocessbyindividualpractitioners.Theabilitytoprovideatrackrecordofbehaviourandsatisfactoryappraisalcanoftenassistthedoctorindealingwithcomplaints.Itisforthesereasonsthattransparency,documentationandclearevidenceofcommunicationwithreflectionaresoimportant.

Revalidationwasintroducedin2012andlinkstheappraisalcyclestoprovideacomprehensivecommentaboutthedoctor.Revalidationistheprocessbywhichdoctorsare“licensedtopractice”andcandemonstratethattheyareuptodateandfittopractiseintheirchosenfieldandabletoprovideagoodlevelofcare.RevalidationaimstogiveconfidencetopatientsthattheirdoctorisregularlycheckedbyboththeiremployerandtheGMC.Licenseddoctorshavetorevalidateevery5yearsbyhavingannualappraisalasdefinedbytheGMC.
